U.S. Figure Skating announced today that tickets for the U.S. Figure Skating x Fashion: Styling 2027 event are on sale. The event will take place at View Boston

U.S. Figure Skating announced today that tickets for the U.S. Figure Skating x Fashion: Styling 2027 event are on sale. The event will take place at View Boston on August 26, 2026, from 6 to 9 p.m. ET. General admission and VIP tickets can be purchased here.
Guests will move through a gallery featuring Olympic costumes, sketches and designer inspiration. Olympic gold-winning costumes worn by Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek and Carol Heiss will headline the gallery of historic skating designs.
Each part of the exhibit will immerse guests in the creative process behind the storytelling of figure skating, allowing them to see how a program goes from concept to costume. Throughout the gallery, there will also be opportunities for guests to take pictures with mood boards, photographs and other interactive installations.

I thought it was informative and a lot of skating and sport plans were discussed

at the same time, one of the points he made repeatedly was that figure skating should lean into engaging with culture

this event would seem to fall in line with that kind of naturally? there is a fashion angle to the sport so why not showcase it

IMO framing skating as a fashion show trivializes what a difficult and demanding sport it is.

In the same speech (as summarized on Reddit) the CEO said "They want it to be "sports and entertainment" not just performances on ice." Skating is one of the few sports that already has an entertainment component outside of competitions (e.g. Stars on Ice, Disney on Ice, other pro shows). I don't agree that "sports and entertainment" are the way to go for competitions. The sport should be the priority.

I don't disagree that the fashion angle is interesting, and that building figure skating costumes is a really interesting process. But the costume should serve the program and the sport, not the other way around.

I think your mindset is spot on - if the year was 1989.

Times have changed. I think this is a creative way to capitalize on post-Olympic enthusiasm in America.

Once gymnasts had more control over what they were wearing, we started seeing lots of pink sparkles, lacey bits, and cut-outs. Women in tennis have been getting more avant-garde. Maybe starting out as athletic and then evolving into flouncy skirts is one thing, but apparently starting with flouncy skirts makes skating "look bad". I don't know why skating has this eternal battle of not being taken seriously, maybe it just the MOST evolved and the final stage of athleticism is excessive whickety-whack.

Indeed. Does no one take Naomi Osaka or Serena Williams seriously because of their fashion displays on the court? Does no one take Travis Kelse or LeBron James seriously because of enthusiastic participation in tunnel walks? Why should skating be ashamed for embracing what has long been a part of its appeal?
