"The Runthrough" podcast with Adam & Ashley & NOC Sarah

SO GLAD they feel the same way I do about Joannie Rochette's Firebird. Her 2006 program was such a letdown comparatively. My gosh.

I was wondering how on earth I'd missed knowing the story of The Firebird despite spending a portion of my childhood parked in front of the TV whilst my mother explained ballet performances to me including the story and what the dancers were doing. Then they got to the bit about Anna Pavlova hating the music and suddenly I understood. When my mother first learnt ballet Pavlova was still considered the ballerina to idolise, so obviously her opinion also influenced what we viewed. Having heard the story now some of the skating choreography makes sense.

this podcast hasn't posted in couple of weeks but they released 3 episodes behind patreon wall only (boston live show, a recap of summer sizzler/champs camp, and then another episode about dancing with the stars and AIN statuses)

there is a regular episode releasing tomorrow about kinoshita cup and they had a lot of opinions tuning back into skating season --
in many parts it felt like lamentation of a sport that has officially passed them by especially from adam, in others they were wondering what on earth was going on with programs and artistic choices, they were surprised at how prepared some of skaters were this early and they basically hated all of the rule changes

there are 3 more lore horse episodes left to release through rest of september

ETA (thanks for the heads up below, @TanithandBenFan!) - not on YouTube: "Hype Skater, Sing Daughter" (August 28) recorded at Ashley's kitchen table in Boston the day after their live show: "In this episode we do a full debrief on everyone's time in Boston. We talk about our live show (that's available to listen to on Patreon) the Summer Sizzler, and famous costumes."

The Sunmer Sizzler recap episode isn’t behind the paywall. I enjoyed hearing about all the shenanigans with Sarah Everhardt and Isabeau 😄

Riverdance was a bit thin in comparison to the other episodes. Hard to do something so recently created.

I’m assuming next week is Carmen, right?
I was listening to it this morning and heard the part about the GP in France in 2014 (and its connection to Lord of the Dance). What a story!!

So they've covered bolero, swan lake, phantom of the opera, moulin rouge, romeo and juliet, turandot, the feeling begins, firebird, scheherazade, don quixote, and riverdance.

I actually think they have a wide range of options for this last one -- even beyond carmen they could pick clair de lune, rachmaninoff 2, moonlight sonata, tosca, exogenesis, rain in your black eyes, danse macabre, malaguena, the nutcracker, adios nonino/libertango, four seasons, pirates of the caribbean, les miserables, liebestraum, and more?

Or maybe they have enough here for a second season

While I've enjoyed the summer lore series, especially the music history segments, I'm glad the podcast will be returning to the core 3 again shortly. I don't want to hear the word "evocative" again for at least six months lol. But I will add Don Quixote to my reading list!

Catching up on The Runthrough--teaching a new subject at a new school has been good but time consuming. Firebird is now my Runthrough Spirit Animal. Loooooved and agreed with every opinion stated. My favorite episode of the entire Lore series.

I wish they had done The Mission instead of The Feeling Begins or Riverdance. I feel like those had more of a "moment" rather than being true warhorses. I would really like to see the original list, as I feel like Michelle really fought for TFB and RD so she could talk more about her favorite ice dance teams

I think Exogenesis should have been on the list, although I guess there's not a huge amount of music history for that. But we could all have become grumpy when they declared Jeremy Abbott as the originator in skating when the correct answer is The Kerrs. ;)

@Bunny Hop , I'm shocked they didn't do Exogenesis either, especially as Ashley did it and it's had some really prominent programs. Or Les Miz. I'm shocked they didn't do Les Miz. Or Sing, Sing, Sing. Or Blues for a Kook. Or Clair de Lune. WHERE WAS CLAIR DE LUNE shakes tiny fist at zambonigods Or that damn Tango one.

I was also surprised by the lack of Les Mis, I think it's done way more than Bolero or The Feeling Begins. I think part of it was the warhorses they were personally interested in learning about more than the actual number of skaters that have used that warhorse. But they have plenty of potentials for the next off season. They could focus on 21st century newer warhorses like Exogenesis, the entirety of Woodkid's career, and hey, what's up with In This Shirt?

I guess it might also be that the lore for some might not be all that interesting—could you really talk about the genesis of Exogenesis for 30 minutes? Though for Les Miz they could have clarified it is NOT the French Revolution. I have arguments with theater kids about that. They always ask to watch it when we begin the FR, and always get mad when I say NO. It’s the FAILED STUDENT REVOLT DAMNIT, and happened 30+ years later. Maybe that was the problem with Clair—the backstory might not be engaging?

Also Carmina Burana. I’m know it’s been a while, but for a while, that was a hot commodity, and that has to have an…interesting backstory.

Sounds like plenty of folder for another summer of Lore Horses.

I’m so glad they ended with Carmen. Between the battle of the Carmen’s and the skating show with Katerina and the Brian’s, plus so many folks skating to it, it really is a star!

Interesting information from their latest episode (public release tomorrow but it's already making rounds)
  • Isabeau scrapped the pirates program based on feedback from champs camp according to ashley/adam and they made it sound like this switch to umbrellas of cherbourg was planned for awhile
  • They did a live reaction to ilia's SP trailer, were confused to begin with, then it clicked for them that it was a tribute program for AA5342; adam was also convinced it was an AI trailer; they also had discussion of tribute programs (they couldn't do it, not fans of them to watch, but more power to athletes if meaningful to them)
  • they were very complimentary of russian skaters at denis ten memorial, particularly gumennik/dikidzhi/ignatova

In this episode Adam and Ashley record this episode without Sarah and so obviously it's a bit off the rials (as one would expect). They talk about dressing as a brick, skating the drums, and texting who you're dating after you get injured at a new rink.
They also ask the question: "Who has time to edit a program preview for social media when you have to sit at Starbucks for 3 hours after practice?"

Adam recounted at 2:33 (YT video) that Isabeau told them at Champs Camp "I don't know if I'm going to be doing it [POTC]."
Ashley: "She basically was like, 'yeah they don't like it' and mentioned Umbrellas of Cherbourg as a possible replacement program at the time.
