Yes, I would have thought Michelle Ellis might have come across that in her research - it's a fact that get's re-hashed almost every time an article discusses their Bolero even now. I know I saw it somewhere when T and D were touring last year.
 
I couldn't listen to it. By 20 minutes in I was done. It took them 10 minutes of chatter to even get started, and then it was 10 minutes of Ravel . .interruption . . . Ravel . . . . interruption . . .interruption of the interruption . . . Ravel . . . .interruption, by which time there had been about 3, or at most 4 actual sentences about Ravel. I was just about screaming at them to effing shut up. It's a pity. I loved their other Lore series, and I think I'd love this series too if I didn't have to listen to endless inane interruptions to the story.
 
I think part of my problem was that I was hiking in the forest at the time. I thought it would be a fun story to listen too, but it was all so disjointed, and yes inane, that I realized what I really wanted was to listen to the trees. Maybe I'll try again next time I'm cleaning the apartment :lol:

I think interruptions and tangents are kind of the hallmark of The Runthrough. This episode is actually more focused than most. Even when they are recapping events, they end up getting distracted and don't cover things very in depth or comprehensively. There are other podcasts that are more focused, like Jackie Wong's.

Which is exactly why I never listen to them, except for the lore series, which was really well done.

The Runthrough is a good example of letting adult ADHD run wild :lol: If you can't get through one of their episodes, definitely don't bother with Adam's other podcast "Instrusive Thoughts". The title is very accurate. Without Not OGM Sarah Hughes to occasionally wrangle him, he literally can't just finish a sentence without drifting on to something else.

I need something in between the two. More structure but not too dry in terms of presentation either.

The next episode of Lore-Horse is Swan Lake. I've only listened to the first half hour but I have to congratulate Adam for coming up with a fact about Swan Lake I didn't know (it's both my favourite ballet and my favourite music), which is that the concept of the black swan is relatively recent, and the costume for Odile was originally multi-coloured. I fact checked it and there's an article on the Australian Ballet website which confirms it. So that was interesting.

Haven't got to the skating part yet but so far it's slightly less chaotic than the previous episode - there's still an hour and a half for that to change though.
 
This week's episode: they announced that since there is so much skating news to cover that the Lore Horse series will be interrupted occasionally for the rest of summer/offseason so that they can talk about it.

They talked about some offseason events on their mind:
  • Loena Hendrickx retirement [they think it is end of era between her and Kaori]
  • Nina Pinzarrone coaching change and move to Colorado (they think draws for her were colorado having more skaters + working on jumps with damon allen using amber as model)
  • Deanna Stellato-Dudek looking for partners in US/Canada [they support it + poked fun at their age]
  • Combined worlds in 2028 [cool idea but they don't like limited cities that could host and they see it as cross-marketing to help speed skating/synchro]
  • They want to go see a synchro event
  • GP Semi-Final: their opinions were divided and they speculated formats to make this work
  • Isabeau Levito working with Benoit Richaud: they made jokes about it but they're intrigued at the collaboration, little wary of benoit choreo but excited to see her step out of her box; they were wondering who else she could work with (not aware that she staged with Nichol/Kostner for other program)
  • They glazed Lori Nichol for a couple of minutes
  • Excited for Lajoie/Baker, liked the long interview they did with Olivia Smart, wondering if they will take SCI TBD spot, release to Canada seems to have been not acrimonious at all
  • Also talked about Lim/Lagha (although adam didn't realize Lim was canadian lol)
  • Chock/Bates, Piper/Paul sitting out, apparently Adam met Piper recently since she was in LA and Adam is very good friends with Piper's twin sister; Piper apparently filmed stuff in LA
  • They punted on discussing GP entries because they think there will be big changes and that a lot of milan olympic fan favorites will not skate [I thought this was surprising given all the retirements/splits/announcements that happened already and signals out there]

Decent broad overview, I think they filmed this before the Russia news, and they're not tracking everything like other media/podcasts which is fair enough

Interesting insinuation re: GP and some Milan favorites backing out.

On Twitter, Isabeau fans are very upset with them saying she went to Benoit to get a boyfriend program.

Yeah, it was before the Russia news and before the synchro news. But, it was after all the musical chairs with pairs, which they did not discuss. They also did not really discuss the GP assignments; I don't think Adam or Ashley had really looked at them yet. But, they said that they are going to do skating update shows once a month, so maybe next time.

I think they pretty clearly hadn't read Isabeau's interview yet, either. They didn't know that it was USFS that suggested that she experiment with other choreographers. They didn't know the music for her programs or that she was working with Lori and Carolina. (Adam will be thrilled to know that his daughter is working with Lori but disappointed to learn that it will not be a "slutty" "hooker" program, which was a ridiculous and unrealistic expectation to begin with. :D Memoria definitely is not going to be slutty.)

The discussion of Isabeau going to Benoit in general was kind of weird. Isabeau could have gone to Italy to visit Stephen without getting a program from Benoit, either to go to the camp or just to visit him like Kimmy goes to visit Adam without training there. If being with Stephen drove everything, Isabeau would be in Italy right now instead of New Jersey. (Personally, for purposes of her skating, I would love for her to go back to Italy this summer.)

Ashley and Sarah basically were unhappy with the idea of Isabeau going to Benoit, with Ashley and Sarah saying that they blamed Stephen. They were kind of assuming that she would end up with a weird program, which isn't really a safe assumption. In the past, Sarah and Ashley have not liked Isabeau's style of programs but eventually ended up saying that she was really good at it. So, it was kind of contradictory for Sarah to say that she loves Isabeau's style and she should stay in her lane. Ashley seemed to want the same thing, but with Lori. I think Ashley and Sarah may be getting what they now seem to want with the Memoria short program. Adam is the one who liked Isabeau's previous program and now wants her to be hooker Isabeau. Weird.

I'm liking the Lore-Horse series. Nothing will be as good as last summer's lore, but this is an interesting idea and despite being a bit chaotic (which is pretty standard), it's fun and I'm learning a lot!
This week's Lore-Horse is Phantom of the Opera, so we have Bolero, Swan Lake, and Phantom. I'm making a list to try and guess the other ones they'll cover.

(The) Phantom of the Opera is one lore I didn't learn anything I didn't already know but listening to Ashley and Adam trying to guess what it was about was worth it, and I find it charming listening to the three of them +.5 Michelle learn about skating war horses. What also made it worth it was Alexei Urmanov's pro Phantom program. Firstly, What the everlovin' Boitano F, and two, this is the epitome of what pro programs should be. I wish we were still that creative. Now, if someone deviates just slightly from what we expect or the storyline, we as fans get all salty and pearl-clutchy and then have the nerve to bemoan the lack of interesting programs. I love that he let just the music influence him and made a true interpretation. I was never a huge fan of Urmanov but I now for sure am.

I am now in my head picturing LaBaker skating to Phantom, with a Dracula crossover. The Phantom could totally be a vampire. It would be AMAZING. Or terrible. Either way, I'm down.

I'm really excited about what they choose, but I made a list in my head of at least 40 songs they should cover. I figure Moulin Rouge, Exogenisis, and Carmen are on the rotation. Hopefully Tosca, cause I love Tosca. And Matrix probably should be covered, but I don't know there's anything they'd say about the Matrix that most of us don't already know. I guess newer fans would be introduced to Joubert.
 
I can't imagine that they would not do Carmen. The battle of the Carmens is a big part of skating lore and there have been so many Carmen programs since then.

I was okay with that, although I thought they might have known more about the plot regardless.

I was more shocked in the Moulin Rouge episode that Ashley and someone else (forget who) didn't know Toulouse-Lautrec was a real person.

I don't think I'm too much of a cultural snob (I mean, I wasn't surprised in the previous episode that they didn't know Dickens' books were all originaly written in serial form, which is why he's so wordy), but I feel like the existence of Lautrec was more common knowledge.
 
If anyone listens to The Runthrough on Spotify, the latest episde (Lorehorse: Turandot) seems to have disappeared. I started listening to it yesterday, but can't be found today. It's still on YouTube though.
