The Dance Hall 14: Waltz Tango Foxtrot

I thought it was Kaitlin who had all the concussions, not Jean-Luc?

ETA: Just checked Wiki and it looks like they both had concussions, but yes he had three. 😳
Hasn't Marjorie also has a couple of concussions? Presumably both she and Jean-Luc have been medically cleared to compete. I do wonder of the number of concussions ice dancers seem to be having recently.

All these difficult lifts are taking their toll. I worry especially for the teams with the smaller lifting partners - Shoma and Jean-Luc come to mind. At least Jean-Luc is experienced. 🤞

The video didn’t show their height difference well, so I looked it up: 7 inches. Reason I looked it up was that I assumed rightly or wrongly that a taller, but not hugely taller, man would have an easier time lifting a woman. Given the concussions it seemed relevant

And for the record, LaLuc is fine but Bakerie is more fun . We could get a donut emoji.

JLB and Marjo should consider starting a bakery side business in Montréal called Boulangerie LaLuc that sells skating and Star Trek-themed goodies.

I'm not excited about this pair.....I just don't see how it's going to work. How long has he been retired? The height difference is also a challenge. Sigh...don't come for me now....I would gladly like to be wrong, though.

Jean-Luc Baker retired in 2023, a bit later than Cizeron (if I remember correctly, he and Hawayek last competed at the beginning of the 2023/2024 season), although, unlike Papadakis/Cizeron, he and Hawayek performed only in a few shows after that. That said, I don't think it's impossible for him to get in form.

The height difference between Lajoie and Baker is larger than it was between him and Kaitlin Hawayek (only 10 cm/slightly less than 4 inches between him and Hawayek, 17 cm/6.7 inches between him and Lajoie).

Cizeron probably started getting back into competitive shape in 2024 when he and Papadakis were considering if they would return, so he probably had a longer run in than Baker even though he and Fournier-Beaudry didn't team up until spring 2025 (assuming that the LaLas didn't decide to split until after Worlds, and Baker hadn't already decided to come back with any partner he could get). He's no doubt much fitter than the vast majority of non-elite athletes, but considering how wiped skaters are complaining about being now that they're coming back to training after their holidays it'll probably take a while. But I don't think it'll affect their prospects if he's a bit gassed by the end of their programmes at their first competitions in the autumn.

I like Bakerie too. They should tell us what their favourite baked goods are, so fans can throw them like Lewis Gibson and the dorayaki pancakes.

Hawayek/Baker's last competition was in December 2022. They intended to compete in 2023-24 but withdrew from GPs due to injury (I think a concussion for JLB?) and then withdrew from Nats.

Yes, you are right. For some reason I thought they competed at a smaller competition in autumn of 2023, but I clearly remembered wrong. Nonetheless, they posted especially filmed performances of their programs for the 2023/2024 season in January 2024, and they were still in great form then.

Neither have ever competed the Golden Waltz -- it hasn't been used in senior ice dance since 2010-11. Jean-Luc competed the Ravensburger in 2015-16 and Marjorie the Starlight that same season.
then no team currently competing in seniors has competed it? I suppose the edge will go to skaters with coaches who have trained/competed it.

Depends on whether or not Guignard/Fabri retire. And whether or not the Shibutani's return was a one and done season. (Additionally Madison Chock, Paul Poirier and Allison Reed all competed in the 2010-2011 season).

If all of the above retire as expected, then correct, no one has competed it at senior championship events.

and even those skaters who have competed it before, not only have they not competed gw in over 10 years, they probably stopped training it a long time ago too. so the edge they have with experience might not be that much of a factor?

Stellato took a 16year break...and she's doing triples. Off course, an ice dancer can take a long break and come back. It's actually easier in ice dance than other disciplines. Not everyone has the crazy perfectionist drive of a Cizeron or Dean that would keep daily workouts and healthy lifestyles. With all these break-ups and citizenships rules, ice dancers are probably calling skaters that stopped competing a long time ago. I'd rather see Poje come back..and I know for a fact that some have tried to convince him.

I have no insight on how jlb will take to competing again and i hope he does well, but i take issue with the idea that it is "easier" for a dancer to comeback than a freestyle skater lol dance can be every bit as difficult (if it weren't everyone would do it)

At least a freestyle skater doesn't have to gel with their new partner!

Carolina Portesi Peroni and Pietro Papetti are a new ice dance team for Italy, training with Barbara Fusar-Poli.

What are we going to do with THOSE names? PorPerPap? Porpetti?

PorPap works doesn't it?

I agree. There's 7 inches between them. That should be enough.
Replying to myself. Out of curiosity I looked up the height difference between Piper and Paul and it's 5 inches (and no one thinks that's not enough). The difference between Chock and Bates is 12 inches (too much imo). So Marjo and JL are just fine with 7 inches. Just about perfect actually.
