The Awards Season Thread

This is also the first Emmy nomination for Charlie Hunnam. I believe he's one of those whose work has been underrated, so I was thrilled to see it.

So……is Limited Series/Anthology going to be wide open? Or will Beef end up winning most of these? 🤔

I’m disappointed that Death by Lightning (Netflix) was snubbed this much but Love Story (FX) got the nominations it received. 🫤

Regarding the early awards I'm glad Widow's Bay, Pluribus and Margot's Got Money Troubles were recognized. Stinks that acting awards where given out now instead of the main award's night. They should do something like the Tony's where they start early before the main broadcast so at least they are honored on the same evening.

Here are the award winners from the Venice International Film Festival. 🇮🇹

Is John Malkovich (Wild Horse Nine) winning Best Actor and not Tom Cruise (Digger)? 🤔
Quoting this here because it's easier, since we don't know exactly what Digger is going to be yet I don't want to count Tom Cruise out, I don't really think the Academy would give him an Oscar in his first non-franchise role in over a decade unless it's a generational performance, but I do think he's a pretty likely nomination. I think John Malkovich has the stronger overall narrative even though they've both been working for the same amount of time, John Malkovich has just done so much more variety wise.

Agreed. I think that it’s a bit worrisome that Digger is skipping all of the film festivals before it’s released next month. I also think that some of Tom Criuse’s promotions have not been received well - the reaction of the World Cup stuff was 🤨.

BTW, I’ll probably want to start a “The 2026-27 Awards Season Thread” with the Grammys like I did last year. I’m pretty sure that the Emmys (which are tomorrow night 😀) were the last awards show done in the previous season’s thread.

WOW. I think that Club Kid really needed to place here. It’s already going to suffer from A24 only having a limited release in the 🇺🇸.

Now I’m wondering how well Netflix will promote La Bola Negra. This is a good start.
Replying to this here because I'm going to be going into the nitty gritty of awards stuff specifically and I don't want to bog down the actual movie thread.

Angh winning the platform prize gives it the ability to contend for the International Feature Film Oscar, India had chosen to submit Ghondal instead but the Academy changed the rules so that if an international film wins a major prize from specific festivals it would get automatic contention for the International Feature Film category. I suspect this was introduced after France elected not to submit Anatomy of a Fall, where it undoubtedly would have won, over fears it contained too much English, even though the Academy was clear it did not.

La Bola Negra is the first movie to win the Palme d'Or and the TIFF People's Choice Award. This could throw a wrench into The Odyssey's so far assumed Best Picture win.

I really liked Ruth Madeley in her guest appearances on Doctor Who, I hope Being Heumann doing so well here will give her a boost in the Best Actress race.

A24 is a weird duck when it comes to how they manage awards campaigns, I still maintain that Everything Everywhere All At Once doing so well at the Oscars was because of how aggressively Jamie Lee Curtis campaigned for herself which led to more people seeing the movie. A24 has Club Kid and The Debut and while The Debut did underperform here, the level of positive attention Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti have been getting would keep The Debut as higher priority for A24 than Club Kid I imagine. Which is unfortunate because both do look good.

I've seen a lot of people who really want Andrew Scott to get a Best Actor nomination for Elsinore, maybe the International People's Choice win for the movie will be the push to get him in the conversation.

Fjord 🇷🇴 / 🇳🇴 won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. That makes it eligible for the International Feature Film even though I think it’s mostly in English.

A24’s awards campaign strategy has been 🤔 in the last few years. I still find it insane that they shafted Sing Sing in 2024 to go all in for The Brutalist.

I also think a lot with A24 will have to do with what the reaction is to Primetime this weekend, especially with Robert Pattinson. And who knows what will happen with Digger the weekend after that.

I wonder if we can get the years taken off the title of this thread so we can just continue the next year’s award season here instead of starting a new thread for 2026-27.

RE: The first point, I apologize, I read someone talking about La Bola Negra's success at Cannes and didn't double check. It has been getting a lot of buzz since then so the People's Choice win does definitely put it in contention for Best Picture at the Oscars.

I believe Romania was submitting Fjord anyway, whether they were doing it because it won the Palme d'Or or they were already planning on I'm not sure but I do know Romania is submitting it.

The other movie that A24 could be leaving in the dust is The Invite. It was one of the best reviewed movies of the summer and did very well at the box office but kind of hasn't gone anywhere in the awards conversation since then. I haven't had the chance to see it yet, unfortunately. I do love a good "adults in a room talking" movie it just hasn't been where I can watch it yet. But I was seeing people saying that Olivia Wilde should be in contention for both Best Director and Best Actress and I haven't seen it talked about much in either area since The Debut well, debuted.

WHOA! 😮 Focus Features has apparently decided to submit Obsession as a Musical/Comedy to the Golden Globes.

How competitive will Obsession be against Wild Horse Nine, Project Hail Mary, The Debut, The Invite, Digger, and Club Kid? 🤔
Inde Navarrette would have had a chance of winning Lead Actress in Drama at the Globes. Julianne Moore has so much buzz right now I can't see her losing that and her movie is actually a comedy/musical.

Also if they were hoping to pull off what The Substance did my understanding is that Obsession isn't really that funny where The Substance is a horror/dark comedy so it at least makes sense. The Globes have got to do something about their categories.

So……being that Digger is looking to be a massive box office bomb plus the 🤨 reaction to it, I don’t think it’s going to nominated for anything other than Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars. And if I had to guess right now, I would predict that Werwulf is likely winning that statue.

I can’t believe that there was this much hype for this being what would give Tom Cruise an Oscar win.

The thing that gets me about the entire early ad campaign is they were trying so hard to do this "look at Tom Cruise going back to serious acting" thing but didn't seem fully committed to it enough to actually put it in the context of this specific movie. It was all about his past movies and not about what he was doing in Digger. Sure some of that was to avoid the spoiler about the twist in the movie (I do know what it is, since I won't be watching it I looked it up), but they could have found some way to advertise the movie without making it more about Tom Cruise's past roles and not about Digger itself. It makes an already complicated to sell movie even harder to sell and doesn't inspire confidence for awards campaigns.

Then of course announcing the Day's of Thunder sequel a month before Digger opens really didn't help.

I am glad Digger isn't likely to do much with the above the line categories, I really didn't want to go through an entire awards season dealing with Tom Cruise's presence. I do think he'll get a Golden Globe nomination though.
