Synchronized Skating to appear at the Olympics in 2030!

Here's the IOC press release -

And the event breakdown which shows the #s of athletes per sport, divided by gender.

For Figure Skating -
69 male athletes (Men's, Pairs, & Ice Dance)
159 female athletes (Women's, Synchro9, Pairs & Ice Dance) - 69 (Women's, Pairs & Ice Dance), 90 (Synchro9 - 9 teams)

The 69 male & 69 female for FS also means that we are going to see another reduction in the # of entries for those disciplines. Best guess - 28 men, 28 women, 18 pairs, 23 dance (but that's just a random guess since the doc doesn't break it down by discipline).

I guess it's not so bad -- milan had the following qualified: 29 men, 29 women, 19 pairs, 23 dance, 5 additional people for team event only (2 ice dance, 1 man)

They're sacking 1 man, 1 woman, and 1 pair for 9 synchro teams

Welllll, we don't know for sure - that's just my best guess based on the 69 men and 69 women for the traditional FS disciplines.

Great news for synchro! I know they've been pushing for this for a long time.

I wonder how it will impact the FS schedule. IIRC, there weren't many (or any?) extra days between the FS and short track schedules. They may hold the synchro events before the Olys begins.

I was looking over the Milano-Cortina schedule a few weeks ago and my expectation is that we'll see synchro and short-track scheduled for the same days. The competition format for Synchro9 includes 3 rounds - preliminary/knock-out, semi-finals and finals. Obviously, we don't know how this will work with 9 teams, but I could see Synchro9 being held on the middle weekend of the Olympics or potentially right after the Team Event, in order to give the individual disciplines a bit more time to recover & prepare from the Team Event.
Will it be women only- or, as now, gender neutral?
Synchro is gender neutral but it's heavily dominated by women. I think at Worlds this past year the number of men across all the teams, including reserve athletes, was no more than 10.

Synchro is typically represented by clubs. Will Team USA be represented by the national champions like the Haydenettes or will usfsa build an all-star team? I am sure that former single skaters and dancers will be interested. Can you imagine Jason Brown do synchro? ;)

An element of syncho is matching your teammates. Singles skaters would typically not make superb synchro skaters.

The 9s will be drawn from top clubs. In the US, it would be a contest between Haydenettes, Miami, Skyliners, and a few others.

Happy to read this.

Nordic Combined is out of the 2030 Olympics. Maybe that made the path free to add another sport, since in the past IOC seemed to be very reluctant to increase the number of athletes.

This could encourage more men to participate in the sport? All members would have to live close to each other would they not? Maybe SC could pick members of a national team based on previous 3 years of Synchro performance - hold a try out of sorts and then pick a team, have them live close by for the pre Oly year only?

I am wondering about this too. The full chart linked in this thread shows synchro9 under women's events specifically, rather than under mixed events (where dance, pairs and team event are listed). I vaguely remember some discussion about this when synchro9 was originally announced - maybe the IOC wants it to be only women for their quotas and such? (If so, that is very unfortunate for the guys in synchro - there aren't a lot of them, but there are a few on some of the top teams.)

My understanding is 2030 will be the first Games to have full gender parity, and synchro9 will be female only. That was a big part of the impetus to add synchro to the Games. At least, that's how it stands now.

That is unfortunate. As has been pointed out, there are very few men in synchro. But the men who do participate should be allowed.

So if there are currently men on Haydenettes, Skyliners, etc, they wouldn't be able to continue with the team during the Oly season.

Finland has established a dedicated Synchro9 team rather than going the club route. It will be interesting to see if the US or Canada take a similar approach. It's possible that the USFS will choose to go a similar route, with a designated training center at SCoB and open tryouts for the entire country with the expectation that selected skaters will move to Boston to live & train.

Yes, they would be able to continue with the "classic" Haydenettes and Skyliner synchro teams with rosters of 21. These teams are not vying for Olympics.

Men would not be part of an Olympic eligible synchro9 team, which is a new format.

That is sad. I wonder if there will be lawsuits about this.
Sure, there could be lawsuits. But again, as I understand it, the 2030 Olympics synchro9 event is being implemented as a women's sport specifically to help ensure gender parity. It could be different for future synchro9 Olympic teams. For example, for artistic swimming, there are eight members per team, and a max of two men are allowed per team. They could work out something similar for synchro9.

The article says synchro9 will be gender-neutral.

Which article, MacMadame?
The IOC press release says nothing about Synchro9 being gender-neutral at 2030 Games.
It talks only about gender parity for the total head count of entire 2030 Olympics.

Off the top of my head: In 2025-26, senior teams of Haydenettes, Skyliners, and Miami definitely had men among their members.
(Seems likely to be true for other U.S. teams too, but I don't know for sure.)

And anecdotally: At 2026 Synchro Worlds, one of the three Synchro9 demo performances was from USA's Teams Elite Junior, which included a man from their "classic" team.

I am happy for the synchro community as a whole, but I do feel for synchro men who cannot aspire to 2030 Olympics.

I know you're just the messenger (and thank you) about the 2030 Games limitation to women for Synchro9.

It seems a shame -- and an irony -- that for synchro's long-awaited debut on Olympic ice, its norm of gender neutrality will not be in effect.

Do you happen to know whether Synchro9 at 2028 Youth Olympic Games also will be limited to women?
(I tried poking around online, but I could not find an answer. I fear that it probably will be Yes.)

Yes. As of now synchro9 will be a female event at the Youth Olympics.

Synchro has really grown as a discipline in terms of skill and elements. It is an overwhelming female dominated discipline. Maybe that is probably the impetus for making it women only.

By having only 9 member teams, it provides greater opportunities for nations to participate because a struggle for teams is getting together a team in the first place, coordinating the logistics and then maintaining it. Plus cost would be a factor. Of course they will have to achieve the relevant technical score in order to qualify.

It is a start. It is easier to get traction with baby steps rather than trying to want the whole hog. Looking at the positive this is a great step to growing the sport because of the focus it will get being part of the Olympics.

Or it's a cheap bit of artifice that lets the OWG achieve gender parity by a deadline without needing to increase their support for women's participation in winter sports.

But both of those teams (the elite competitive ones) have more than nine members, right? If the club has a large competitive team and a nine-member Olympic level team, the men could still participate in the non-Olympic team.
