Skate Canada announced today the appointment of Therese Brisson as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 27, 2026. She succeeds Debra Armstrong, who led the organization for the past decade.

Brisson brings extensive leadership experience in Canadian sport, business, and organizational development to the role. A two-time Olympic medallist and accomplished executive, she is widely recognized for her expertise in governance, strategic planning and operational transformation.

Over the past two decades, she has held leadership roles across the Canadian sport system, including serving on the boards of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Own the Podium, and most recently as President and CEO of Alpine Canada.

“We are thrilled to welcome Therese to the organization,” said Skate Canada President, Karen Butcher. “She is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the Canadian sport system and a passion for excellence. We are excited for her to bring a fresh perspective and skillset to Skate Canada as we continue to build on our Strategic Plan heading into the next quadrennial.”

Reflecting on her new mandate, Brisson commented: “Skate Canada has a proud history and a thriving community across the country. I look forward to working with the Board, staff, athletes, coaches, volunteers, and partners to help shape the next chapter of success for skating in Canada.”

As CEO, Brisson will oversee Skate Canada’s strategic direction and operations while working closely with stakeholders nationwide to support grassroots participation, athlete excellence, and the continued growth of skating in Canada.

While she was in charge at Alpine Canada, the federation settled two big lawsuits by athletes who were sexually abused by coaches. Hopefully Brisson learned from those experiences, and is going to be serious about cracking down on abuse within Canadian skating.
