I've mentioned it before on this site that it galls me that I can't find a recording of a specific memory that I have from 1994: Soon after the Olympics "Champions on Ice" had dates in Atlanta and NBC was broadcasting. I don't know why this stuck with me except that I agreed with the audience wholeheartedly. When Natalia and Artur were announced and took the ice there was sustained applause with a lot of the audience standing for them. I have nothing but respect for G and G but the silver medalists always had my heart. I was so pleased for them that they had that moment.

It's sad that Artur died so young. My sister and I met him backstage briefly after the COI in 1998. My sister asked him what book he was reading. He said he was reading a book about circus.

I’m watching some of the commentary about them and it’s weird how they clearly weren’t the judges favorites. I guess bc they didn’t have the same classical style as G&G?

Still processing the death of Artur Dmitriev, my favourite male pairs figure skater. Tried but failed to find the CBC broadcast of his and Oksana Kazakova's long program at Nagano in 1998. I remember sitting on the edge of my seat, reveling in the artistry and willing them to perform flawlessly, and one of the commentators--Sandra Bezic or Paul Martini?--saying that although Artur had had to get himself into shape for that performance, he was "doing it" and indeed he did rise to the occasion. Rest in peace, Artur.

Were Natasha and Artur not on good terms? She's been radio silent on insta and she's usually very active. And she's also very heavily involved in the skating world. She posted some cute photos of her and Tamara Moskvina recently.

ITA. People should not have to post their grief on Instagram. They should be able to grieve in their own way and in their own time.

Having said that, Natalia did post on Instagram from St. Petersburg, saying, "It’s hard to say goodbye… you will be deeply missed and forever remembered"

This is wonderful. Right off the bat though was something I never thought about with M/D and Moskvina. Moskvina talked about being able to coach her top pairs for hours at a time when the Soviet Union provided her salary. And then when it split apart and the money dried up she would need to divide her time between many pairs just to make ends meet. And now they are back to a similar system of government sponsorship when the cream of the crop gets the attention. I think I feel envy. I'm glad though that we were able to see the results especially with M/D.
