RIP Arthur Dmitriev sr

I just watched their Lillehammer performance. I can't believe the ending with the ripping of his chest open and how he passed....yikes...who knew what kind of foreshadowing that would be
 
At the 1996 Worlds I was watching a pairs practice. One of the newspaper photographers told me he had been assigned to take photos of Artur Dmitriev, and could I please point him out? I did, and the photographer laughed and said, "perfect. I was taking photos of him anyway because he's the one who caught my attention. He's clearly the best one here."
 
Such heartbreaking news. Artur was one of the greatest male pairs skaters of all time. On the ice, he was magnetic ... you couldn't take your eyes off him. I'm so grateful that I got to see him perform live (with Oksana) and witness firsthand the pure charisma he exuded. I've seen so many wonderful skaters over the years; and, over time, memory fades for some of them, but never for Artur. He was just that special. I am so very saddened to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. May he forever RIP. 💔
 
Wow, I have been watching him with Natalia now, will check with Oksana. I was a huge fan then, and watching now, he still is amazing. Not the big jumps like 3 lutz, but so much better than the current ones in many ways. The expression, the extensions, the unison with the partner.

Many condolences for his family, and for Moskvina.
 
As another person who became a skating fan in the nineties, Dmitriev was such a defining figure of that period and for me was really the pairs man. He was such a skater for the big occasions, both the two Olympics he won with Mishkuteniok and Kazakova and the one he didn’t.

I just rewatched his Puppet/Clubbed to Death programme with Kazakova, so completely different to anything he did competitively and an example of how great pro skating could be.
 
Were Natasha and Artur not on good terms? She's been radio silent on insta and she's usually very active. And she's also very heavily involved in the skating world. She posted some cute photos of her and Tamara Moskvina recently.

Natalia and Artur are my favorite skaters...People often asked Natalia questions along this line. (I don't know her, but early profiles describe her as quiet and shy. --I relate. I am not comfortable vocalizing emotions outside of my immediate family.) Circa 1998 her response noted that she was friendly with both Artur and Oksanna; she gave her some outfits to match with Artur. In 2008 Natalia noted that she had just spoken with "Dmie" on his 40th birthday. --- I wonder if I can find those citations.
I began following pairs largely because of these two. Artur was sublime in every way.

That's good. I did get the sense that maybe they drifted apart after 1994. Didn't she marry some hockey player (later divorced) who wouldn't let her speak Russian?
Just thought it was odd. She is very active on insta, and very involved in the skating world. And we know she keeps in touch with Tamara.
 
Some of the fluff pieces from the 90s on Mishkutenok and Dmitriev portray a complicated relationship. There were rather frank discussions about Natalia’s weight and her supposed struggle to cope with Artur’s marriage and family.

This reminds me of the heavy cloud comment Tamara Moskvina made about Natalia.

Did Artur's wife choreograph some of their programs?

Working relationships are complex. I'm only in touch with a few people I knew well in the 1990's and that's only because of Facebook and I worked for the same federal agency for 25 years.

Once the goal has been achieved and people move on, there may not be any reason to continue. Sometimes, the only thing people have in common is the job.
