Remembering Dolly Parton

There are so many tributes to her and I think of the way she quietly gave back to the world when there are uberwealthy people who have more money than they will ever spend in their lifetimes whose only goal is greed. What will the world say when they are gone apart from a sigh of relief.

My heart broke when I read the news that she had died. I'm still processing it. The world is a darker place today.

There is a concept in Judaism that there are 36 hidden righteous people in the world. Their unseen goodness keeps the world from being destroyed.

Who are these 36? We don't know. Even the 36 don't know. So what is the lesson? The lesson is to treat each other...as if we might be one. Or who knows? You might be standing next to one now.

I fully believe Dolly Parton was one of the 36. May her memory be a blessing.

BBC has a whole "Live" page up with multiple stories & tributes: https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c0ry0yzxeyxt?at_medium

They have a photo of the Empire State Building lit up in "pink sparkly" for Dolly.

I am heartbroken.

I saw the musical, HERE YOU COME AGAIN, about a middle aged gay man whose muse was Dolly Parton, three times in Melbourne last year. The show became my go-to happy place at a time when I really needed some personal guidance.

Ms Parton has done so much for so many people. Her light will stay with me forever.
I read a post elsewhere from one of the creators of that show who said that Dolly contacted him to let me know that, because of the creation of the "9 To 5" musical, she was going to have to terminate the rights to use her songs in "Here You Come Again" after the initial period that she had granted for use by that creative team.

She did, however, waive all of her royalties for the term of that existing contract, which made a large difference in the profitability of the several productions running at that time,

Piper Gilles' tribute:

This guy on instagram agrees with you, and so do I. So do a lot of people, judging by how this rant keeps popping up in my feed.

On the day she died, Dolly Parton sent us a reminder that she wasn’t a billionaire.

I always preferred her original version of I'll Always Love You to the Houston version. Dolly's was very poignant especially when you know the backstory of her and Porter Waggoner's history. He put her on TV and she became a much bigger star (we watched every Saturday at my house when I was a kid). She was just supposed to be the requisite generic female singer. There was nothing generic about her. He didn't take it well when she left the show (she was the reason people were watching). She had that quality to her voice that took you on the journey of the story she was telling. In theory, Jolene should be annoying because she's begging her not to take her man, but it's so sad, you feel every bit of pain she was putting in the song.

Later on, when he was experiencing financial difficulties, Dolly quietly purchased Porter Waggoner's book of music. When he later recovered financially, he asked her if he could buy it back, but instead she gave it back to him.

There was no one like Dolly. Truly one of a kind. The tributes of fans leaving flowers and such at her Brentwood home, as well as her statue in Pigeon Forge, is very touching.

Another one of her great songs: Little Sparrow

Some interesting things about Dolly's music career:

Topped various Billboard charts including Hot 100, Country, Pop, Adult Contemporary, Bluegrass, Christian, Rock, and Dance.

44 career top-10 country albums.

26 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, tying or holding records for female artists.

Over 110 career-charted singles on the country charts spanning seven decades.

I know I saw her performing with her family (wonderful singers) but I couldn't find it. And I ran into her 60 Minutes interview with Morley Safer and it was there. I also like that he was so tickled by her. I suspect he loved doing that interview.

Dolly and Kermit
Miss Piggy was a bit jealous
She was deeply religious, while at the same time a Gay icon and never homophobic. Good spirited to say the least.
A REAL Christian. A true angel on earth

Dolly and Kermit
Awww two of the best icons of the modern era, together...

I may well have misstated the theatrical property that was the reason for the situation above.

Dolly Parton’s Broadway musical will continue after her death

Parton spent years preparing to tell her life story on stage, and that story will now reach Broadway without her. Following her death on August 25, producers of ‘DOLLY: A True Original Musical’ confirmed that the autobiographical production will proceed with its planned run and open on what would have been Parton’s 81st birthday.
