Remembering Dolly Parton

Associated Press' live updates:

BBC News' obituary:
ETA an excerpt:
During her teenage years, Parton began to model herself on a local character who was known as the "town tramp".
The lady wore bright red nail polish, low-cut tops and high heels - young Dolly thought she was beautiful.
When people said to her: "She ain't nothing but trash", Parton would reply: "Well, that's what I'm gonna be when I grow up".
Parton sang "I'm just a backwards Barbie / too much make-up, too much hair", but her image was both a coat of armour and an astute disguise that helped get her noticed in show business.
She would get ahead of the jokes by making them first, and had a quick and simple response for anyone who suggested she should tone it down: "Go to hell."

She was a fantastic songwriter, knew her way around a guitar, could sing, act and wrote some books along the way. She was a careful and astute businesswoman. She wanted Dollywood to be affordable with delicious snacks and plenty of family fun for everyone.
But I think it was that huge and joyful personality that was her true calling card. There was no one quite like her. You combine that with everything else and her humanitarian efforts you have something close to an angel on earth. She was special.

January 2026:

The Truth About Dolly Parton's Boobs
Dolly has been candid about her weight going "up and down" through the years, telling reporters in 1987 that she'd lost about 50 pounds by eating small amounts of food six or seven times a day.

And she merely wanted her breasts to stay in line with where her body was.

"I’ve been known for my boobs long before people started having the implants, and I have never had silicone injections,” the Straight Talk actress told the Chicago Tribune in 1992. “’I have had some cosmetic surgery, especially after I lost weight and stuff, and I’ve had my breasts lifted, but not injected. That would scare me to death, anyway."

As she put it to CBS News' Dan Rather in 2004, she had them "pumped up and fixed up. They just stand up there like brave little soldiers now. They're real big, they're real expensive and they're really mine now."

However, they're not insured for $1 million apiece—or for any amount.

"It’s not true about that," Parton said in dispelling that rumor on TODAY in 2022. "Years ago, was it Betty Grable, or one of the great famous stars that was famous also for her legs? And at that time I said, 'Well maybe I should get my boobs insured since I’m famous for them,' but it was just a joke. I didn’t do that."

:D

Parton has also set up a reserve in 2003 to help preserve the bald eagle; contributed $500,000 to the opening of a Sevier county hospital in 2006; coordinated relief efforts for those affected by the Smoky mountain wildfires of 2016; and contributed to an HIV/Aids charity album. She supported Black Lives Matter and transgender rights, opposing a North Carolina “bathroom bill” that restricted transgender people’s access to toilets (Parton was also nominated for an Oscar for her song in trans drama Transamerica, entitled Travelin’ Thru).
Rest in Power Dolly!

My absolute favorite country music singer. A woman who gave back for every dollar she made and supported all people. RIP Dolly. She was on some awards show and won. When she stood up, her dress split. She borrowed a mink coat from the person sitting next to her and went to the stage. She was laughing so hard and said that's what happens when you put a 10 pound bag of flour in a 5 pound bag. I laughed till I cried.

I always preferred her original version of I'll Always Love You to the Houston version. Dolly's was very poignant especially when you know the backstory of her and Porter Waggoner's history. He put her on TV and she became a much bigger star (we watched every Saturday at my house when I was a kid). She was just supposed to be the requisite generic female singer. There was nothing generic about her. He didn't take it well when she left the show (she was the reason people were watching). She had that quality to her voice that took you on the journey of the story she was telling. In theory, Jolene should be annoying because she's begging her not to take her man, but it's so sad, you feel every bit of pain she was putting in the song.

Peter thank you for taking the time to find so many songs we may not know. You know Dolly well.
