https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/sep/19/chicago-cop-jon-burge-torture-dies
Burge led a “midnight crew” of rogue detectives accused of torturing more than 100 suspects, mostly black men, from 1972 to 1991, in order to secure confessions. His alleged victims were shocked with cattle prods, smothered with typewriter covers and had guns shoved in their mouths. In 2015, the city of Chicago agreed to pay $5.5m in reparations to 57 Burge victims. G Flint Taylor, a civil rights attorney and lawyer for some of the men, estimates the price tag for all Burge-related cases is about $132m. At his 2012 sentencing, one alleged victim said Burge was so cruel that he laughed while he tortured him. Burge said he was “deeply sorry” for the disrepute his case had brought on the Chicago police department, but he offered no apologies for his actions.
Chicago's long history of police brutuality and terrorism against the black community and other POC communities.

*** Constituent called 911, suspecting drug deal, on Dane County Supervisor Shelia Stubbs while she canvassed for Assembly seat :
https://madison.com/ct/news/local/g...cle_65a7dcea-52e0-5ad0-acea-135d10c3def0.html
“FULLY OCCUPIED SILVER 4 DR SEDAN NEWER MODEL - THINKS THEY ARE WAITING FOR DRUGS AT THE LOCAL DRUG HOUSE - WOULD LIKE THEM MOVED ALONG,” read the notes from the call for service, made shortly before 7 p.m. on Aug. 7.

The driver of the car was 71-year-old Linda Hoskins. Her 8-year-old granddaughter sat in the backseat. Her daughter, Shelia Stubbs, stood nearby, talking to a resident of the neighborhood in his doorway. The two women and the child are all African-American. Stubbs, 46, was a candidate for state Assembly and a 12-year veteran of the Dane County Board of Supervisors. She was knocking doors, introducing herself to voters in the 77th Assembly District. Exactly one week later, her name would appear on the ballot in the Democratic primary election, which she would win with nearly 50 percent of the vote.
*** Police called on black UMass employee walking to work :
https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-em...profiled-in-anonymous-call-to-police-20227707
Reg Andrade, a longtime employee at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who is black, was walking from the recreation center to work across campus early Friday morning, like he does every day. But on that day, somebody decided to call the police on him.

Police shut down the building and searched for Andrade, a 14-year employee at the university who works as a case manager in the disability services office. He said he returned from a restroom break to find two plainclothes police officers waiting to question him — about what he did the night before, when he got to campus, whether he was upset walking into the building.

I can get the logic in the first instance. It probably did look like that....especially if there are drugs in the neighborhood. We had a white teenager in our neighborhood who regularly at 2:00 AM would stop in front of our house, and shortly there after a small truck driven by another white kid would chug along the other way. Windows would go down and things were exchanged. Come to find our, a HUGE drug bust (the distributor) was made a few blocks over. We called the police (DUH) but could never catch them.

And the second? Who knows. Someone was obviously alarmed. Was it because he was black? Maybe not. if he walks that route every morning, the people along the route would have seen him often, I would think.

Bad people come in all colors. Whether it is the person asking for the cops or the person being questioned by the cops.

BTW - in Europe it is called Ethnic profiling, which I think is a more precise descriptive. When you attract "race" to anything, people get hostile, before you even get to the facts.

Shoot....I won't go to the ATM if there are a bunch of teenagers loitering around no matter what color. And, please save me from little old ladies who can barely see over the steering wheel driving at 10 miles an hour with their signal going...just in case they want to turn LOL.

I think it's more likely in both of these cases that the person calling the police was doing a sort of SWATing type call to get these people in trouble with the police.

Given all the Spanish names on maps across the southwest & Florida, it should.
I agree with the should but how many people were born and raised in a rural small town and have never left their state or maybe never even left their town? I doubt that they're looking at maps and, unfortunatey, they're probably not taught much about that kind of history in school either.

When I look at the kids from my parents' street playing, I'm being reminded over and over again that no one is born a racist. Kids with roots in India, Hispanics, black kids, white kids, they're all playing together more or less each day in summer. It's so beautiful to see and so sad to think that it can't be like that everywhere.

*** ‘Handcuffed on my own property’: Video shows black homeowner questioned by Kan. police :
https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article219422675.html

When the police car’s headlights lit up his driveway, Karle Robinson was resting his body against the top of his large-screen television at the front steps of his new Tonganoxie home. What happened next, Robinson is sure, would have gone differently if he weren’t a black man.

It was 2:30 in the morning. His moving project had turned into a 12-hour marathon, and the heavy, unwieldy TV was all that he had left to take inside. “I could use a hand with this,” Robinson said to the officer who shined a flashlight on him.

He’d spend the next eight minutes handcuffed, seated in front of his own house, treated like a burglary suspect while the officer waited for backup to check his story. The officers’ explanations struck him as flimsy. His complaints, taken to the Tonganoxie police chief, went nowhere.
Even once the other police showed up, they left him outside while they searched his house, rather than escort him inside so he could get his ID or documents. It seems like a fine line between an unwarranted forcible vs. voluntary search.

*** White woman calls police on black man babysitting children :
https://www.cbs46.com/news/white-wo...cle_0b02ccda-cba4-11e8-89db-ff7b3202479e.html
Lewis said the woman followed him all the way home. Then a Cobb County police officer showed up.

The officer questioned the 10-year-old and the 6-year-old before calling their parents.

David Parker and Dana Mango were in disbelief.

“I said are you saying that because there’s an African American male driving my two white kids, that he was stopped and pulled over and questioned and he said I’m sorry ma’am that’s exactly what I’m saying,” Mango told CBS46.

The East Cobb couple arranged for Lewis to babysit their children weeks ago.
It seems like there ought to be some kind of consequences by the time an unknown person is stalking children all over town without cause. Stranger Danger!!!

*** White woman calls cops on black child she says touched her butt :
https://nypost.com/2018/10/12/white-woman-calls-cops-on-black-child-she-says-touched-her-butt/
“I want the cops here right now!” the woman, who identifies herself as a Flatbush resident named Teresa Klein, can be heard demanding over the phone. “The son grabbed my a– and she decided to yell at me.” A crowd starts to form outside the Sahara Deli in Flatbush as the woman, in sunglasses and knee-high boots, continues to yell loudly into her phone, as frustrated residents implore her to “go home.”

The child can be seen wailing outside the bodega as the crowd tries to comfort him and come to his defense.
Here is the video from inside the store confirming there was no such assault --

*** Florida deputies called on black father who yelled at son during youth soccer game :
https://abcnews.go.com/US/florida-deputies-called-black-father-yelled-son-youth/story?id=58530024
A parent at my son’s soccer game had the police called on him for cheering for his son during the game. This man was simply trying to watch his son's soccer game and cheer for him from the sides. He yelled “The ref is right!” when he saw his kid out there getting frustrated after a call. This woman, lets call her Golfcart Gail, decided to spring into action and rapidly approach this parent and remind him that harassment would not be tolerated. He informed her that he was only speaking to his son. For whatever reason, Golfcart Gail just would not let this go. … What makes this even worse, is that a parent had actually been ejected from this game during the third period. There had to be a delay of game due to the disturbance yet, Golfcart Gail didn’t need to call the police on him. Why weren’t the police called? What was the difference? I’ll give you a guess.
Another parent at the game, Maria Morales-Walther, also took video of the encounter between the field marshal and the father.

"He was standing next to me, talking to his son and this lady decides to butt in somehow and is now calling the cops because he was talking to his son," Morales-Walther says in her video, which she shared with ABC News.

When the field marshal saw her filming the encounter, she told Morales-Walther, "Ma'am, you can leave too. Videotape yourself as you're walking out."

*** Woman fired after video of her blocking man from entering his downtown loft goes viral :
https://www.kmov.com/news/woman-con...l&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share
Cellphone footage captured the confrontation between the two tenants showing the woman stopping a man from entering his downtown loft and demanding proof he lived there. D'Arreion Toles was returning home from a late night at the office when a tenant who lived on the third floor of Elder Shirt Lofts created a roadblock.

In the viral video, Toles can be heard telling the woman, "You are blocking me into my building. This is my building as well. So, I need you to get out of my way." The woman then begins to questions Toles by asking what unit he lives in. Toles showed a key fob in the video and moved past the woman, who News 4 will not name, before taking an elevator to the fourth floor. In the video, the woman is seen following Toles to the front door of his loft.
It sounds like she was the one who kept the door ajar in the first place so he couldn't use his key fob for entry & then called the police after she harassed him all the way up in the elevator & realized he lived there (???)

I don't think this woman deserves anonymity. (Why is she getting anonymity but not he to begin with?)

He's not getting anonymity because he's the one who posted the videos on Facebook. She's no longer anonymous & has given news interviews saying she was simply following "instructions" by the condo association. Although I bet the instructions don't say to stand inside the building with the door open while your dog goes out on a retractable leash, which is apparently what created the situation in the first place. Had she accompanied her dog outside like most other urban pet owners have to do, the door would have been shut securely & the man could have accessed the building using his normal method.

These people always have some sort of justification.

In places where you get in with a fob, TPTB are always saying not to let people tailgate into the building behind you. And most sane people either make sure the person can't tailgate (by closing the door behind themselves) or they ignore it when people do tailgate. They don't go all Citizen Police on the other person for many reasons.

I bet if a white man had gone into the building while she was holding the door open, she would have been uncomfortable (because she wasn't supposed to let that happen) but would have let it slide. Or at most would have said "do you live here?"

*** 63-year-old Greentown woman charged in racist letter incident :
http://www.kokomotribune.com/news/l...cle_5e3429f0-d949-11e8-a643-d32df94b7db6.html
A 63-year-old Greentown woman was arrested Thursday after police say she left a racist letter aimed at a black child on the door of her neighbors’ recently-purchased home. Deborah Cantwell was booked in the Howard County Jail and charged with misdemeanor counts of intimidation and criminal mischief for a crime that’s left the Greentown community rallying around a family left traumatized.
*** White woman faces charges after yelling at black neighbor ‘You don’t belong!’
https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article220728810.html
Police say criminal charges are pending for a white woman who is seen in a video confronting two African-American women in an apartment parking lot in south Charlotte. The video, which one of the women posted on Facebook on Friday, shows a middle-aged white woman approach two black women and call them “b----” and asking “Is your baby daddy here?”

The two women who were accosted are heard in the video asking the woman to leave them alone, and saying “you are harassing us.” But, the woman continues to berate the women and asks repeatedly “Do you live here?”

After the two women walk away and one of them calls 911 to report harassment, the white woman yells at them from a distance: “Do I need to bring out my concealed weapon, too? This is North Carolina by the way.”

No dramatic video or escalating name calling altercation. Just an ordinary man doing his regular job, unfairly assessed by workers who wouldn't have a conversation with him & later by the police.

It's hard to believe this one. I don't know whether it's been discussed here previously, but yeah, cops in a Wisconsin town stopped a car and ordered a young African-American teenager to exit the passenger seat with his arms in the air. Why? Because he was riding in the car with his grandmother who happens to be many shades paler-skinned than he. She's termed 'white,' but that's a faux term, as is 'African-American' and 'black' for that matter. But these are the terms and the incidents we deal with every day.

When I first noticed the story on Youtube, I began praying that this innocent youngster didn't lose his life due to 'racial profiling.' I don't believe the cops' story that other African-American bystanders had reported this as a possible car-jacking attempt by the young man against what turns out to be his own grandmother. Why do the police's or anyone's thoughts jump to such negativity and blind, hateful assumptions? 'Misunderstanding'! Yeah right. :blah:

I hope the police get sued for damages and the boy and his grandmother receive remuneration. How emotionally and psychologically disruptive and damaging.

*** PETA ridiculed, criticized for comparing 'speciesism' with racism, homophobia and ableism :
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...twitter-ethical-treatment-animals/2213631002/
In a tweet Tuesday that has now gone viral, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals warned against using "speciesist" phrases, and proposed alternatives.
"Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon," the animal rights organization tweeted Tuesday.
According to PETA's chart, the birds may be protected from "speciesism", but won't eating scones kill them too? PETA is not an advocate for the best interests of birds.

I remember in college how we dissected a few PETA ads and talked about how in advocating for their messaging, they use a lot of problematic sexist and objectifying imagery.

*** Cleveland man alleges racial profiling after bank refuses to cash check, calls 911 :
https://www.cleveland19.com/2018/12...rofiling-after-bank-refuses-cash-check-calls/
McCowns said this was the first check from his new job with an electric company. The paycheck was for a little more than $1,000. Tellers told him they couldn’t cash it. So, McCowns said he left the bank.

What he didn’t know is that as he was leaving the bank, employees called 911 on him. Cleveland 19 obtained a copy of the 911 call and police report. “He’s trying to cash a check and the check is fraudulent. It does not match our records,” said the teller to a 911 operator.

McCowns was handcuffed and put in the back of a Brooklyn Police cruiser. Minutes after being arrested, police were able to get in contact with McCowns employer who confirmed the check was real and that McCowns is an employee.

A wrestling referee who had made racial slurs at a social gathering a couple of years ago told a black teenage wrestler that he had to either cut off his dreadlocks or forfeit his match. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/m...dreadlocks-20181221-story.html?outputType=amp

According to a news report I read this morning, regulations updated for this year state that ALL hair length must not extend beyond ears and if it does, a regulation cap that attaches to the mask must be worn. Wrestlers not complying with the rule have the option of cutting their hair or forfeiting the match. In this case, this wrestler was not wearing a regulation cap. Another rule is the wrestler must be clean shaven, if not he had 3 minutes to shave or forfeit the match.

The wrestler’s coach should had been aware of the rules and spoken to the wrestler and made sure he had the proper headgear.

The article mentions that the referee did not allow the wrestler to cover his head and it also sounds like the regulations aren't clear or not well known. The author writes that he got two answers on the matter.

I saw this on msnbc earlier.

The referee, instead of telling the kid to wear a cap, had his hair cut off in public. That’s got to be traumatic.

It was not clear to me if the referee warned the kid that unless he covers his hair with a cap, he would have to cut his hair to fit the regulated length of hair.
Did the kid refuse to wear a cap?
