Here is a thread to continue the Starbucks discussion (originally started in Why Does This Keep Happening) & other such incidents. There have been enough of them recently in the news to keep it interesting.

*** Black men arrested at Philadelphia Starbucks reach agreements with city, coffee company :
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/starbucks-arrest-black-men-settle-philadelphia-rashon-nelson-donte-robinson-20180502.html
Two black men arrested for sitting at a Philadelphia Starbucks without ordering anything have reached an agreement with the city, which will pay them $1 each and set up a $200,000 program for young entrepreneurs at their request.

Separately, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson reached an agreement with Starbucks that offers an undisclosed financial settlement, the company said in a statement. Nelson and Robinson will also get free tuition at Arizona State University as part of the agreement.
Important but not noted in this article, their arrest record for the incident was expunged. One question I have that remains unanswered is whether Starbucks will continue to use 911 at taxpayer expense for these clearly non-emergency situations. They seem to use this as a SOP although the city says they will be changing their procedures & response to it.

*** Police Called to Investigate Native Americans on CSU Tour :
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2018/05/04/csu-police-body-cam-video-released-911-call-hands-in-pockets-caused-concern/
Colorado State University has offered to refund two Native American teenagers their travel expenses, while also offering an all-expenses-paid VIP tour of the campus, after accusations of racial profiling during a campus tour.
Thomas and Lloyd Gray, Native American teenagers from New Mexico, said they were on a tour of the CSU Fort Collins campus, when a mother of another visiting student called the police to report their behavior. Police allegedly responded to reports of two suspicious males tailing the group.
- Transcript of call to CSU police regarding Native American students on campus tour:
https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2018/05/04/transcript-call-colorado-state-university-police-regarding-native-american-tour-members/582637002/
- Message from President Frank Re Admissions Tour Incident:
https://safety.colostate.edu/
Two young men, through no fault of their own, wound up frightened and humiliated because another campus visitor was concerned about their clothes and overall demeanor, which appears to have simply been shyness. The very idea that someone – anyone – might “look” like they don’t belong on a CSU Admissions tour is anathema. People of all races, gender identities, orientations, cultures, religions, heritages, and appearances belong here. As long as you want to earn a great education surrounded by people with the same goal who come from every part of our state, our country, and our world, then you belong here. And if you’re uncomfortable with a diverse and inclusive academic environment, then you probably have a better fit elsewhere.
Here are a couple other cases so far from this year -
*** After alleged racial profiling, Applebee's employees fired, Missouri restaurant closed :

*** L.A. Fitness says employees accused of harassing two black men are no longer with company :

Waffle House has not yet reacted to the police brutalizing Chikesia Clemons when the manager called them on her over whether plastic utensils with her to-go order should be free or not.
https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/chikesia-clemons-video-saraland-alabama-waffle-house.html
Ms.Clemons' mother described what led up to the incident:
According to Clemons-Howard, a female Waffle House employee tried to charge her daughter 50 cents for utensils. Clemons and Adams responded by saying they weren’t charged for utensils when eating at the same restaurant location the night before, Clemons’s mother explained. The employee canceled the order but did not ask Clemons to leave, and Clemons asked for the district manager’s contact information. As the two waited, Clemons-Howard said, police arrived

They wanted her to play for those crummy plastic utensils? That's crazy. I don't blame her at all for balking.

*** Filmmakers say they were stopped outside Airbnb rental because they were black :
https://nypost.com/2018/05/07/filmmakers-say-they-were-stopped-outside-airbnb-rental-because-they-were-black/
Kells Fyffe-Marshall, recalled the April 30 incident that left her “angry, frustrated and sad” after police in Rialto responded to the scene as the group was locking up an Airbnb residence they had rented the night before.
“The four of us packed our bags, locked up the house and left,” Fyffe-Marshall wrote on Facebook. “As you can see 3 of us were Black. About 10 seconds later we were surrounded by 7 cop cars. The officers came out of their cars demanding us to put our hands in the air.”

The officers also told the group that a helicopter was “tracking” them at the time, with other cops having already locked down the neighborhood.

“Why? A neighbor across the street saw 3 black people packing luggage into their car and assumed we were stealing from the house,” the Facebook post continued. “She then called police.”

A Yale Graduate student who was black was sleeping in a common area of the graduate school. A white woman called the police. Why do they feel the need to call the police as soon as they see a black person? Why do they assume that the black person does not belong there? This graduate student had a room in the Yale dorm, so she was able to show her ID to the police. However, it should not have been asked for, and the police should never have been called. Why couldn't that woman simply start a conversation with this grad student, to find out who she was, what she did, etc., instead of calling the police? This is so disgusting. Is the racism getting worse? Stories like Starbucks, airbnb and the incident at Yale makes me think that the biased people are coming out of hiding.

We were discussing the Colorado State U incident today & realized some of us would have qualified for several check offs on the unreasonable mother's list, not only from many years ago when we actually did our own college tours but even today.

1) POC
2) Touring college with no parental escort
3) Quiet & reserved, don't want to speak up in front of group of people or make a scene
4) Not interested in twenty questions with assertive demanding parent who is also a stranger
5) Wearing black clothes with other than mainstream designs & artwork
6) Sticking a hand in a pocket while idly standing around listening to the presentation

We would not have fit in with her definition of the eligible college student either. Hilarious that the mom was so concerned they weren't paying attention to the tour but in the meantime she was completely obsessed with everything they were doing, so imagine how much of it she missed herself. Funny but not funny, especially when the wrong players are identified as the "creeps". I wonder if she's thought about it since then or if she's still up on her entitled & misguided "if you see something, say something" high horse.

I think folks now feel they have carte blanche to say whatever they feel, regardless if it is rude. Some think by saying “ oh I was drunk or I apologize “ that it makes their rudeness acceptable. I think some of these apologies are insincere and strictly stated for show without them taking responsibility for their actions.

I don’t want nor care from an apology from a person who is insincere, it’s a waste of my time.

The white woman who called campus police had previously called campus police on a different black graduate student who was trying to find a meeting. :wall:

Meanwhile, there is no shortage of incidents where white folk just can't keep themselves from calling the police on POC just living their lives.

Woman calls cops and waits 2 hours for them to show up because people were grilling at a park where everyone grills

*** Starbucks chairman opens up about the company’s race failures – and says its bathrooms are now open to all :
https://www.seattletimes.com/business/starbucks-chairman-opens-up-about-the-companys-race-failures-and-says-its-bathrooms-are-now-open-to-all/
Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz said Thursday that the company would now open its bathrooms to everyone, regardless of whether a purchase has been made, following the arrest of two African-American men who had asked to use the bathroom at a downtown Philadelphia coffee shop.

Schultz, speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington hours before he was slated to receive a business leadership award, said the company is changing its policy after weeks of controversy because it wants everyone — customer or not — to feel welcome at Starbucks.
Not to mention they might be worried we'll keep going to Panera where I live since they don't have bathroom or table police.

*** US issues apology after Canadian minister told to take off turban at airport :
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/10/us-issues-apology-after-canadian-minister-told-to-take-off-turban-at-airport
Bains was returning to Toronto after meetings with Michigan state leaders in April 2017 and had already passed through regular security checks, but because he was wearing a turban, a security agent told him that he would have to undergo additional checks, according to La Presse.

“He told me to take off my turban. I asked him why I would have to take off my turban when the metal detector had worked properly,” the minister said. The US amended its travel policy in 2007, allowing Sikhs to keep turbans on while passing during the security inspection process. He refused the agent’s request to remove his turban: “I believed that it was an intrusion into my private life … They would never ask me to take off my clothes,” he said. The agent eventually relented.

Store manager in Tacoma recites theft policy outside a changing room while a black customer is trying on dresses TO BUY. When customers confront her, she calls security. The manager has been fired (good).

I do think people are emboldened to say and do more than they did a few years ago, but I think POC have always been targeted - in stores, on the street, in the park - and the larger public is getting more exposure to it now.

The silver lining of these incidents is that people are pushing back. Maybe it's better that it's being exposed instead of simmering under the surface.

Real-estating while Black:

WTF is wrong with people?
They're racist.

But there is a small drop of hope in this story - the cops came, welcomed the filming of the interaction, and told the lady off for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. They also stuck around for a while so the man could take photos of the exterior of the house. More of this, please!

Meanwhile, there are memes inserting the photo of the woman who called cops on the barbecuers last week into all sorts of photos, and it's hilarious. The Obama Oval Office one is brill

https://thegrapevine.theroot.com/woman-who-called-the-cops-on-oakland-family-becomes-vir-1826029582

There was also an amazing cookout protest in that park last weekend that sounded awesome.

A few days ago a video went viral of a (white) cop's dash cam. Apparently, he reanimated a little (black) baby boy on the side of the road who had stopped breathing in the mother's car and then he rushed the boy to the hospital. I read that the boy's going to be fine.

It feels like this should not make it beyond local news and all that should be reported is that a cop saved a baby boy. But nowadays, it does feel like the fact that a white cop saved a black boy needs to be national news. :(

In any case, it did warm my heart (in general but also, because this is how it's supposed to be) and I'm happy for the mother that her boy's going to be ok.

They also told her they would arrest her if she called him again about it. I think that's what needs to happen.

There also needs to be a new number people can call if they want police help that isn't 911. I think in a lot of situations, people call 911 because it's a number they know but they know it's not life-threatening. But 911 is geared to emergency, serious response. I think some escalation happens when you call 911 as we've seen in situations where a caller reports someone with a gun who says it's probably a toy but the police don't get that information.

I saw "emergency 911, non emergency 311" written on the back/trunk of police cars in Chicago.
Granted, it's been a while now but it was also the first and last time I ever saw it.

We have 911 emergency & 311 non-emergency where I live, but I guess I didn't realize it was not available on a widespread basis in big metro areas. BBQ griper would be a 311 here.

*** Man threatens to sic ICE on restaurant staff for speaking Spanish :

The irate man told the manager that his next move was to alert U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and get them to raid the restaurant. "My guess is they (the employees) are not documented," he says. "So my next call is to ICE to have each one of them kicked out of my country. If they have the b---s to come here and live off my money?

Yes, because all Spanish speaking people who live in the US are undocumented just like all German speaking people are Nazis and all Muslims are terrorists :wall: Does that kind of stupidity hurt? (And did someone let him in on the secret that they're only "living off" his money because he's going to the restaurant?)
