In France. Journalistes are saying that this is also a way to record how many people who are leaving here (in each house) how many they can request to get in the russian army to force them to fight against ukrainian …
So they're going to draft people from Donbass at gunpoint and then they're going to arm them and expect them to use those arms against other Ukrainians?

Putin remains a master strategist.

The women being mobilized are mostly medics. According to The New York Times, many of those who anticipated being called up have fled to other countries. I do wonder how the regime intends to deal with a shortage of healthcare workers both in the military and on the home front.
Also definitely IT specialists. My husband’s best friend & his wife, both of whom are IT managers for a large German firm in Moscow, were also sent the notice.

Medical personnel do stand out among the women conscripted because females constitute a very large percentage of Russia’s medical drs…not just nurses, as in the west.

Unless one is ridiculously wealthy and can afford the $10,000++ one-way coach fare to Azerbaijan plus whatever is paid under the table to ensure that you get a seat on the plane, one stays. Not to mention moving your household effects, etc.

As bad as it sounds, it doesn’t come close to what people in the bombed areas of Ukraine have been through & are still alive to remember. It all boggles the mind.

"the people of [Russia-occupied] Snihurivka [Mykolaiv region], have gathered to protest against the illegal referendum."

video attached:

----

"message from the former president of Mongolia @elbegdorj blasting Russia for using ethnic minorities as cannon fodder, says no dictatorship lasts forever.'

ETA: More on this:
"He calls on Buryat, Tuva & Kalmyk Mongols not to go & fight in Ukraine & says Mongolia will receive them if they flee"

There's an English translation of what he says on the attached video. Support for Ukraine included.

----

Statement from President Biden on Russia’s Sham Referenda in Ukraine

"The United States will never recognize Ukrainian territory as anything other than part of Ukraine. Russia’s referenda are a sham – a false pretext to try to annex parts of Ukraine by force in flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Charter. We will work with our allies and partners to impose additional swift and severe economic costs on Russia. The United States stands with our partners around the world – and with every nation that respects the core tenets of the UN charter – in rejecting whatever fabricated outcomes Russia will announce. We will continue to support the Ukrainian people and provide them with security assistance to help them defend themselves as they courageously resist Russia’s invasion."

----

Russia attacked Odessa with Iranian drones. In response:

"Ukraine revokes the accreditation of the Iranian ambassador and expels several Iranian diplomats to protest drone deliveries to Russia (which Iran’s foreign minister told Kyiv in July would never happen)"

Silvio Berlusconi is talking complete BS about Russia's occupation of Ukraine. Absolutely shameful for someone who has been prime minister four times to have so little understanding of war, sovereignty, international relations and so little clue of the death and destruction. Even if he's in Russia's pocket, how can he say these things so openly and shamelessly? He must feel that part of public opinion is already on his side. :(

His party Forza Italia is likely to be a coalition partner in the new government. This fairy tale would have been quite funny if this mentality weren't about to win the elections.

Berlusconi defending his friend

He says:

"Putin found himself in a really difficult and dramatic situation. I say 'found himself' because a mission from the two pro-Russian republics of Donbass went to Moscow and talked with everyone, with radios, with press, with television, with party members, with ministers of the party. Then a delegation went to Putin and said 'Zelenskyy has increased his forces' attacks against ours at our borders. We've had 16.000 dead. Please protect us, because if you don't protect us, we don't know what will happen to us.'

"Putin was pushed by the Russian public, by his party, by his ministers to invent this special operation by which the troops were supposed to enter and reach Kyiv within a week, replace Zelenskyy's government with a government of decent people and go back within a week. Instead, they encountered an unforeseen resistance from the whole of Ukraine which was then also supplied with all kinds of arms by the West.

"So now the war has gone on for more than 200 days, the number of dead increases. The situation in Ukraine is very difficult to keep under control, because - I don't even understand why - Russian troops are scattered all over Ukraine whereas in my opinion they should have stopped around Kyiv. Therefore today the situation is, as we also see on TV, I can tell you that I feel bad when I hear about the dead because I've always considered war the rage of the furies."

I think one of the most striking points is that he looks at the war completely from Russia's point of view: "The situation is very difficult to keep under control, because Russian troops are scattered all over Ukraine."

I wonder, how prevalent is this point of view in Italy and the rest of Europe.

Looking at the explosion of books about the war, most of the titles concentrate on Russia and see Russia as the main actor, ignoring Ukraine's role in their own history, independence and now their war of liberation.

Russia started mobilization in occupied Crimea. 80% of ppl who received enlistment note are Crimean Tatars, native ppl of Crimean peninsula, journalist Sevgil Musaieva reports. “For 8 years Russia repressed Crimean Tatars, now decided to get rid of us this way”, says Musaieva.

Hopefully they'll defect pronto into Ukrainian controlled territory (I fear it's not so easy)

Just wanted to post the same thing. Can't wait for this moronic country to collapse spectacularly. They just keep finding ways to look more and more barbaric and cruel. I still cannot get over the way our POW look like.

I too hope Crimean Tatars find a way to surrender quickly.

Zelensky tells Ukrainians if they cannot avoid conscription to:

Sabotage any activity of the enemy, hinder any Russian operations, provide us with any important information about the occupiers — their bases, headquarters, warehouses with ammunition,” he said. “And at the first opportunity, switch to our positions. Do everything to save your life and help liberate Ukraine.

----

According to "Crimea SOS" portal, about 90% of the subpoenas in #Crimea were received by Crimean Tatars. At the same time, Crimean Tatars make up 13-15% of the peninsula's population.

----

Think this is the greater danger to American aid for Ukraine. Not Russia's referendums.

"Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.) and conference chair Elise Stefanik (R., N.Y.) recently declined to commit when asked publicly whether they would continue providing aid to Ukraine should Republicans take control."

(Undoubtedly Putin is hoping Republicans will take control of Congress and decrease U.S. funding. I assume Republicans could do so, though the executive branch has a lot of power when it comes to war. And the American public--including my patch of rural America--remains behind Ukraine. I don't know how much of a danger the mid-terms are to U.S. funding for Ukraine. I don't have any doubt that electing Trump or DeSantis would be devastating to U.S. funding for Ukraine, but this November isn't a presidential election).

free link (for some time) totally interesting, kudos to all soldiers who keep them running

U.S. troops and translators equipped with iPads and secure-chat apps talk Ukrainian fighters on the front lines through repairs of weapons including U.S. Himars mobile rocket launchers.

Snowden received a Russian citizenship. Does it mean he will be drafted?
That could be one way for him to show his gratitude to Russia for granting him refuge, I suppose. A photograph of Snowden out on the battlefield in full combat gear would be a great propaganda opportunity for Putin, right?
