However, the return from holidays at the beginning of the month, "the first in 14 years, was a big shock, a big stress", says the double European champion on the other end of the phone, during a training camp in Courmayeur in Italy.
"I came looking for patrons, sponsors to finance my preparation for the Games. This season, I haven't done many shows, most of the time when I'm available it means risk of injury because no recovery before the return to competition... That's how I injured my ankle two years ago, I'm more attentive to it. And at the same time, I had fewer results, but it wasn't that bad either. Two silver medals in Grand Prix, the final Grand Prix medal, 5th at the World Championships, 7e at the Games. It's not nothing, but there's a little less prize money and you're less called up for shows. It's the snake biting its own tail," he says.
Up to €180,000 per season While some of his compatriots were also looking for possible jobs with adapted positions that day, the skater, who wants to focus "200% on competition", was instead looking for sponsors, companies with whom to share his experience. "I spend 7 to 8 hours a day skating between the ice, the warm-up, the physical preparation, the yoga, the administration part... You don't have space for a job on the side. It's a delicate situation common to many athletes."
Financially, he swears that "it has never been so hard". It must be said that the Bordeaux native has changed his status in recent years, playing the leading roles and reversing the codes of his sport, allowing the reintegration of the backflip in competition (with Ilia Malinin). At the same time, the financial burden of the elements to be implemented to remain at this high level has increased.
"I have help from the Federation, the city (of Nice where he is based) and the region, but it's not enough. When I was younger, I didn't have as many expenses. Between the staff, the costumes, you have to rework the music, pay the rights, the physical preparation, the trips to the training camps, the training, sometimes you also have to pay for access to the ice... A season can cost up to €180,000. »
The transfer of all of Nice's ice sports has cut into some opportunities with local sponsors who were counting on the opportunity to gain visibility. "We say to ourselves, it's in France, the sponsors will follow, it's not that simple."
So to seduce those in the Lyon region, Adam Siao Him Fa highlights his experience that he can come and share in the territory during off-peak periods "events, meetings, conferences, everything is possible". The fact that his sport is the one that has "the biggest audiences during the Winter Games", and that he strives to make his 125,000 followers visible on his social networks.
Accustomed to prospecting by email, "thousands without answer", the skater appreciated this direct exchange with "the right people", sometimes so difficult to identify. "To have participated in this event is a very good thing. I don't know how it will turn out, I'm waiting for feedback. I really hope to be able to find a solution. »
