"Untold" on Netflix: The "Crime and Penalties" episode: I simply don't know what to say about this. But I do wonder if this one will catch fire the way "Tiger King" caught fire. https://youtu.be/GrJ3ntd1FCU
We've watched two episodes. My husband is loving but I'm undecided. Was bored and looking for something to watch so I decided to check out Only Murders in the Building. It is silly but fun and I’m loving it!
This was a great documentary. Fascinating to watch some of the wildlife footage. Amazing photography. Funny animals like jackass penguins in South Africa. And an amazing project in India where a village planted crops specifically for the elephants so they would not raid the village’s rice fields…. And it worked.I see a new documentary on Apple TV+: The Year Earth Changed. Its about the effects of lockdowns "opened the door for nature to bounce back and thrive." Looks interesting.
I haven't seen it yet, but it's been recommended to me by multiple people. Was it just bad or was it one of those it actually captured what they set out to capture but it wasn't pleasant to see? Finally got around to watching Mare from Easttown. Meh.
The first two episodes, we almost gave up. But then I got into the mystery so we watched the whole thing in one night. But most of the characters were horrible, there were way too many secrets and way too much stupid behavior. If I wanted to see that, I would have never moved away from my hometown.
Do people know that Easttown Township is a real place, btw? It seems to be more Main Line than where I grew up but the working-class township vibe was very similar.
I thought Mare was fantastic. The first episode didn’t pull me in completely but by the end of the second I was totally sold. I loved the suspense every week.I haven't seen it yet, but it's been recommended to me by multiple people. I'm actually over that when it comes to British shows. I find they all have the same flavor and if you watched one, you sort of seen them all. There's a lack of emotional investment I find too. Like the stakes don't seem as high because when they kill people off, it doesn't really impact the characters. They just move on even if they spend a scene or a few on a death. I kind of wish police procedurals like that properly dealt with death and grief. That's what I find seriously lacking in those formulaic shows.I have not watched Mare of Easttown for more than 15 minutes because I am over and done with depressing murders and sad female detectives with sad family lives. Am I wrong about that?
That said, from folks who have watched it, I am glad it exists. Because now, instead of going into a long descriptor of my childhood, I can just say "Mare of Easttown". In fact, my sister is a Mar, but we always spelled it without the e. Pronounced as though there is one.
Easttown PA bears no resemblance to Mare's hometown. Southeast Delco, where I lived from preteen years on, appears to be the setting. Where all the white people from Southwest Philly moved. But that's another story.
I should watch also to see if they do nail the accent. I can "code switch" pretty easily, and sometimes unknowingly when I'm angry. It comes in handy.

Are you wrong that you are over and done with that? Only you can say.
Others may not be, and only they can say.
(I haven't watched Mare of Easttown yet, so I don't know whether I will like it. I do intend to give it a try one of these days.)

Loved it but this clearly isn't for you. I do like women who can be curmudgeons if it is coupled with a good mystery so I'm a fan of "Vera." She is often downright rude but somehow I like her anyway.Sorry, poorly worded.
Yes, I am done with (usually British) middle aged women detectives, my life's a mess, my kid's a brat, my friends are jerks, and let me solve this horrible murder with no help from my chauvinist male colleagues. Nope, no more.
So is Mare of Easttown an American version of that? Sounds like it could be.
Then even checking out the accent won't save it.
Only if those other shows have real character growth on the part of the main character. That was probably the main thing I liked about it -- that she confronted her issues and worked on them. Also, the mystery was fairly good and only got preposterous in the last few episodes. So is Mare of Easttown an American version of that? Sounds like it could be.
I noticed it on the map as being on the Main Line but figured it was just a grittier part of it. It definitely felt more like Bristol Township where I grew up than my own memories of Main Line.As for Easttown Township, the real Easttown Township is part of Chester County, not Delaware County, and is on the Main Line.
Haven't seen Mare yet...
As for Easttown Township, the real Easttown Township is part of Chester County, not Delaware County, and is on the Main Line. It is a pretty affluent township (less than 1% of families live below the poverty line) and part of the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District (a good district and one of my district rivals growing up). Local police give really high tickets for speeding (no points, 5 miles over with real speed listed) that pay into everyone's pension for a several $$$. Not that I would know, but it's possible that I may know "people" who have gotten tickets for going 42 in a 35. Yes, I could be that person... Or 31 in a 25.
Yes! We just got Apple+ to watch Ted Lasso and hope to find time to watch Come From Away tomorrow between skating and tennis. This Broadway version should be special. We saw a touring company performance and loved it!Come From Away is on Apple TV now. I’ve seen it live but this is the original Broadway cast performing in front of first responders, health care workers and family of 911 victims. It was excellent

Thanks for the headsup! I just turned it on. Took my mother and daughter to see this in NYC in 2019. Probably one of my favourite musicals.Come From Away is on Apple TV now. This is hilarious.Yes, I know that the "real" Easttown is in Chesco.
Mare does not live in the real Easttown, but in some fictionalized version set in Delco. In fact, they specified her accent as Delco. (which, for auschlanders, is pretty much southeastern Delaware County. No one refers to Radnor or any of the other nice places in Delaware County as "Delco". Just us low class folk from places like Ridley. )
How Kate Winslet nailed the accent TV fans can't stop talking about
The "accent nerd" went to extraordinary lengths to sound like a Pennsylvania native for HBO's "Mare of Easttown." Here's how she did it.www.latimes.com
And thank you to everyone for the head's up on Mare. I understand many folks like that kind of show and I may be a minority. But forewarned is forearmed.
This is hilarious.
That said, this Radnorite grew up hearing it referred to at Delco. Granted, I lived in Villanova, but the poor side of Villanova (Delco vs Monco) so maybe that's why? But Radnor regularly referred to it at Delco. Now, not with the same level of pride that people from Garrett Hill talked about Garrett Hill, but...
As a result of these conversations, I can't figure out whether or not I should try and watch Mare of Easttown...
I did think the filmed version of Come From Away was incredible. I only saw the tour, but it's one of my favorite musicals.
