I see a new documentary on Apple TV+: The Year Earth Changed. Its about the effects of lockdowns "opened the door for nature to bounce back and thrive." Looks interesting.

As a follow up to a previous post, I'd mentioned the Fathom documentary, also on Apple TV+, which followed some researchers studying whale sounds. One of those scientists was on a podcast called Periodic Talks, with Gillian Jacobs and Diona Reasonover, and they played some of the whale recordings. Fascinating stuff, the August 10th episode.

I see a new documentary on Apple TV+: The Year Earth Changed. Its about the effects of lockdowns "opened the door for nature to bounce back and thrive." Looks interesting.

This was a great documentary. Fascinating to watch some of the wildlife footage. Amazing photography. Funny animals like jackass penguins in South Africa. And an amazing project in India where a village planted crops specifically for the elephants so they would not raid the village’s rice fields…. And it worked.

Finally got around to watching Mare from Easttown. Meh.

The first two episodes, we almost gave up. But then I got into the mystery so we watched the whole thing in one night. But most of the characters were horrible, there were way too many secrets and way too much stupid behavior. If I wanted to see that, I would have never moved away from my hometown.

Do people know that Easttown Township is a real place, btw? It seems to be more Main Line than where I grew up but the working-class township vibe was very similar.

But most of the characters were horrible, there were way too many secrets and way too much stupid behavior. If I wanted to see that, I would have never moved away from my hometown.

Do people know that Easttown Township is a real place, btw? It seems to be more Main Line than where I grew up but the working-class township vibe was very similar.

I haven't seen it yet, but it's been recommended to me by multiple people. Was it just bad or was it one of those it actually captured what they set out to capture but it wasn't pleasant to see?

I thought Mare was fantastic. The first episode didn’t pull me in completely but by the end of the second I was totally sold. I loved the suspense every week.

That said, from folks who have watched it, I am glad it exists. Because now, instead of going into a long descriptor of my childhood, I can just say "Mare of Easttown". In fact, my sister is a Mar, but we always spelled it without the e. Pronounced as though there is one.

Easttown PA bears no resemblance to Mare's hometown. Southeast Delco, where I lived from preteen years on, appears to be the setting. Where all the white people from Southwest Philly moved. But that's another story.

I should watch also to see if they do nail the accent. I can "code switch" pretty easily, and sometimes unknowingly when I'm angry. It comes in handy.

I'm actually over that when it comes to British shows. I find they all have the same flavor and if you watched one, you sort of seen them all. There's a lack of emotional investment I find too. Like the stakes don't seem as high because when they kill people off, it doesn't really impact the characters. They just move on even if they spend a scene or a few on a death. I kind of wish police procedurals like that properly dealt with death and grief. That's what I find seriously lacking in those formulaic shows.

You can't really go wrong with Kate Winslet IMO.

Yes?

Though, to set the record straight, I never said it was bad. I said I didn't like it. But I do think that there was a lot of unnecessary secret-keeping and also it seemed like some of the character choices made no sense with people keeping secrets or thwarting the police for no good reason.

As for Easttown Township, the real Easttown Township is part of Chester County, not Delaware County, and is on the Main Line. It is a pretty affluent township (less than 1% of families live below the poverty line) and part of the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District (a good district and one of my district rivals growing up). Local police give really high tickets for speeding (no points, 5 miles over with real speed listed) that pay into everyone's pension for a several $$$. Not that I would know, but it's possible that I may know "people" who have gotten tickets for going 42 in a 35. Yes, I could be that person... Or 31 in a 25.

Loved it but this clearly isn't for you. I do like women who can be curmudgeons if it is coupled with a good mystery so I'm a fan of "Vera." She is often downright rude but somehow I like her anyway.

Only if those other shows have real character growth on the part of the main character. That was probably the main thing I liked about it -- that she confronted her issues and worked on them. Also, the mystery was fairly good and only got preposterous in the last few episodes.

As for Easttown Township, the real Easttown Township is part of Chester County, not Delaware County, and is on the Main Line.

I noticed it on the map as being on the Main Line but figured it was just a grittier part of it. It definitely felt more like Bristol Township where I grew up than my own memories of Main Line.

Yes! We just got Apple+ to watch Ted Lasso and hope to find time to watch Come From Away tomorrow between skating and tennis. This Broadway version should be special. We saw a touring company performance and loved it!

I’m taking French classes in anticipation of my trip to Montpellier so I’m watching Dix Pour Cent on Netflix (with English subtitles, thankfully) as I’m told it helps to learn a language. I’m only a few episodes in but it’s quite funny.

A lot of F1 fans are approaching this with some trepidation, after the sensationalism of Drive to Survive and the heavily-sanitised, deifying Senna, but so far the trailer and who we know have been interviewed for it is soothing some of the worst fears.

Because as great as Schumacher is, you cannot talk about his career without talking about the times he crossed the line. It is an undeniable part of his legacy. The showing of the beginning of the Monaco 2006 lap in the trailer, and people like Damon Hill being listed in the interview subjects, makes me think that they will actually address it.

His wife and his daughter being part of it also means it's far more in-depth than anything else - his daughter, especially, has almost never been in the press.

There are a few people holding out hope we might get a hint, a word, an update, perhaps even a cameo by the man himself, but I do not think so.

But Radnor regularly referred to it at Delco. Now, not with the same level of pride that people from Garrett Hill talked about Garrett Hill, but...

As a result of these conversations, I can't figure out whether or not I should try and watch Mare of Easttown...

I did think the filmed version of Come From Away was incredible. I only saw the tour, but it's one of my favorite musicals.

Isn't that article great? I had no idea "the accent" was so difficult.

I guess when I lived in Delco (and my parents lived in Ridley Park for 40 years), I didn't know anyone from Radnor. So I still carry the southeast Delco chip on my shoulder and made assumptions Of course, when I was in HS, there was no Blue Route and it really was a different world and far away.

I'm still not sold on Mare. It's going to be depressing, and they're going to pretend to be from SE Delco.
