Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

We watched Dear White People on Netflix, about a group of black students attending a fictional Ivy League college. Really enjoyed this show—the acting is great; the story construction is interesting; and it’s funny. And, dare I say, a bit educational (for this white person, anyhow). I felt like I didn’t always understand every bit of the dialogue or the references (could be an age thing ), but I got most of it. Fun.

I love that show!! I heard there was a movie too but it wasn't as good. Since it cost money to stream, I haven't watched it.

I watched the first two episodes of this last night. Really enjoyed it. I follow Moshow on FB and TikTok. He is such a sweet guy. And DJ Ravioli is the coolest cat.

I watched The Tomorrow War with friends tonight. I don't understand why people liked it. I think this movie went out of it's way to annoy me.

First of all it is very predictable. Although I do wish they would have gone into more details about the rules of who could be sent to the future. You take one look at the drafted civilians to send forward and you know why the death rate is 70-80%. Why even bother drafting them because they are clearly going to die in 5 minutes?

Lots of death and fighting happens so Chris Pratt can look like a hero.

Then Chris Pratt meets his daughter in the future and she's the great scientist that is going to figure out how to save the world. They kidnap the queen alien and of course, the aliens attack the last stronghold where their time travel device is kept along with the kidnapped queen. Why is the research on the aliens in the same place as the time travel device? They know the males live to serve the queen. They are going to come rescue her. Why, why, why bring her to the time travel device?

Then they waste several minutes of her creating a poison in the very last minute and fighting their way to the time travel device. Chris Pratt isn't even carrying the poison even though he is supposed to be the one who is going to bring it back in time and prevent the war from ever happening in the first place. Then they waste several minutes of him trying to save his daughter and having a death scene passing over the poison when all he has to do is GO BACK IN TIME instead of pissing around. Humans already lost at this point. The last military stronghold has just been breached. The world ended. The second he goes back in time and stops the war from ever beginning his daughter never dies horribly by alien. We don't need that scene at all.

Of course they dumbass their way through preventing the war too. The human race and the current world leaders have gone to such an extreme of drafting pathetic everyday civilians as soldiers who are going to die horribly without being any use at all in the future war. Yet he comes back claiming to have a poison and knowledge of where to find the aliens before they emerge. Suddenly no one wants to take ridiculous measures to stop the war before it begins. It's apparently fine to send worthless drafted civilian soldiers through time but not send a well equipped and trained team to Russia. The heroes have to band together on their own little save the world expedition without government help.

They find the ship and find one tiny little room with 8-10 aliens in it. They poison a few and stand back watching them screech horribly in death throes which wakes up the other aliens who start screeching for their millions of little friends stacked Matrix style in a much bigger room. That's when they decide to set explosives around the ship and blow it up. Why couldn't they just blow up the damn ship while the aliens were sleeping and not waste time with the poison or even waking them up? Of course the queen gets loose and the have to chase her ass all over an iceberg.

It's just stupid. They chose the dumbest and most annoying paths for every decision they ever made throughout the whole movie. I want my time back and I want to slap whoever wrote this stupid ass screen play.

The BBC did a remake of The Lady Vanishes. It is available on Amazon Prime along with the original Hitchcock version. I watched them back to back and no surprises here but Hitchcock won. The remake was very ham-fisted with the "you don't believe me because I'm a woman" message. Yes it's true to the story but was so overdone IMO that it just got annoying rather than being a good theme in the movie itself. I didn't really like or hate any of the actors in it so it was just kind of meh all the way through.

The remake dumped the spy aspect of the original which I liked. The lady witnessed a murder and was too afraid of her powerful employer to testify against him. I thought was a good way to bring it into modern day and still maintain the focus of the film. She was running away from powerful people chasing her. It maintained the purpose and point of the original movie but refreshed it a bit at the same time.

I might have to give "The Tomorrow War" a try. I tend to ignore reviews as a general rule.

And I agree with you about science fiction being too gloomy and dark of late. A suggestion: Try "Love and Monsters" (I thought it was on Netflix, but apparently it's only available via VOD right now). I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Currently watching The Cook of Castamar,(The Cocinera de Castamar), a period drama on Netflix. I'm only on the second episode and cannot decide if I will watch the whole thing. But it does have intrigue, opulent sets and costuming and is interpolated with a lot of sex scenes.

I totally agree about the Japanese artist. She was so talented (her photography was amazing as well) but very humble. Those eyes on the russian blue cat were amazing and she got them to perfection. I thought it would be an US focused show with a few crazy cat people but I now can't wait to see who else they show.

If you have Amazon Prime, I think all the Star Trek TV series are available for free, and some of the movies. I taped some TNG episodes on BBC America last week (or maybe the week before) and have watched a couple. For me they're still entertaining; I watched Darmok the other night, which is one of my all time favorites.

I'm almost done with the Harry Potter series of movies and I may watch the last few seasons of Deep Space 9 again; I remember some creative, good story telling but I've forgotten the details.

DS9 was my favorite Star Trek series when it was on the air, though I have since come to favor Voyager slightly more. I absolutely adored the way Bashir and O'Brien's friendship developed, as well as Jadzia and Worf's romance. Odo was probably my favorite character, however. Rene Auberjonois (may he RIP) really had a way with sarcasm, and his snarky relationship with Quark was perfection.

Just as an FYI, I believe most of the Star Trek series are also available on Netflix for those who subscribe to that.

I recently watched Deep Space Nine from start to finish. I gave up on it first time round as it didn't hold my attention (and was on TV at an odd time which kept being changed, which didn't help). I can now say I've watched all of it and I stand by my original assessment. Every time I thought it was getting good it turned out to be just a random episode or two. The tribble episode was the best one.

I've started watching Star Trek: Enterprise on Netflix. I think I only previously got part way through season 2 as I was gettting frustrated with some of the character. I'm enjoying it so far, but let's see if I'm still saying that at the end.

Original Trek and Voyager are my favourites. Next Gen is fine, but I feel like it's not aged that well but hasn't yet reached the stage of the original series where some things can be excused because of when it was produced.

I loved Rene Aubernonois too. Avery Brooks was also a great actor; I saw him in an interview once and he was kind of a lunatic, so that made me appreciate his acting more. I loved the way they developed O’Brien.

I recall some interesting parallel universe storylines in DS9, but I don’t remember the details now. Yes, the Trimble episode was very enjoyable!

I only watched Enterprise because it was Star Trek. They had a few nice moments of filling in back stories but overall it was meh for me. TNG is my favorite of the series. I haven’t rewatched a lot of them lately, but the ones I have, I’ve still enjoyed. Patrick Stewart looks so young in them! He’s 81 years old now. Last year he did a reading pretty much every day of one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, and posted on Facebook.

I stopped watching every Star Trek episode ever with DS9. Towards the end, it just stopped being Star Trek to me and it didn't hold my interest. I also gave up on Voyager towards the end as there was a lot of sameness to the plots. And I never got into Enterprise. I am enjoying Discovery though. The place we watch it is behind though so I have to be careful to avoid spoilers.

We do indeed have Amazon Prime, and we are currently watching what they call "TOS" when we need a reliable fix of something not dark, not trying to impress me with its intelligence and range, and entertaining.

I think the Horta (I'm a doctor, Jim, not a bricklayer) will be next, although Spousal Unit is angling for Mr. Oxnyx and a Piece of the Action. We have DS9 on DVD, so we've seen it all the way through twice. Some of the plot lines wearied( trapped in a prison on an alien world is a bit too redundant even for me), but the acting was terrific.

I'm going to put in a plug for The Orville (yes, you need Hulu). I looooove it. The best Star Trek since Star Trek. I had never seen anything else from Seth MacFarlane, movie or TV, but this show really held my attention. Aliens, space soap operas, a ship with bright lights where you can see what's happening, and best of all, a respectful homage to the original. I'm anxious to know when season 3 will drop.
