Movies to Watch on a "Sick Day"

I'm not sick but just watched Project Hail Mary on Prime. I thought it was such a sweet story, and it brought back memories of ET. I may go back to watch that again after 40+ years.
 
I watched The Apartment today for probably the 10th time, another one of my all time favourites. I was able to pick up the Arrow Academy bluray restoration (it has since been released in 4K as well) a while back and it's a really well done restoration.

I also watched Two Mules for Sister Sara earlier and that put me in the mood to notice scores and watching The Apartment again today it made me think that the right person could make a great skating program from the score for The Apartment.
 
The Apartment was a really funny movie! I wonder how it would work if remade into a 2026 scenario?

I imagine the right director could do it but I would run into the same problem with it that I ran into with the TV movie adaptation of The Lion in Winter with Glenn Close and Patrick Stewart. I love the original to much to ever be able to objectively watch the remake. I've tried watching the The Lion in Winter TV movie a couple of times and I just can't do it.

But being remade with a 2026 scenario is not the same thing as a remake. It's more an "inspired by" situation.

Truth be told, that is my favorite version of Sherlock ever and second place is not close. That was a brilliant show. I still hit the reruns and just saw Sherlock's wedding speech for Watson and Mary the other day. So Sherlock.

Now I realize this is a series and not a movie but "Patrick Melrose" is the series that I decided that Benedict Cumberbatch is the best working actor today. I'm not sure who else could have pulled that off. Anyway if it ever pops up you might give it a look.

I agree with you about BC. He has such range. I saw "Patrick Melrose" when it first came out, but it's been a while. I'll have to watch again. Also excellent was his work on the BBC's "The Hollow Crown: War of the Roses." It's kind of funny that he just recently did "The Roses" with Olivia Coleman -- that movie was a modern take on "The War of the Roses" with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas.

There are so many BC movies that I have loved. I don't know that I could pick just one. But I have both "The Imitation Game" and "Doctor Strange" on DVD.

I think for me it will be Melrose and Sherlock--like Dr. Strange those characters can go in so many directions. I also loved his performance in "Parade's End." And "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is one of my favorite films and has British cinema royalty and I liked him in that as well. "The Power of the Dog" was not easy....I both hated him and felt sorry for him. I think with other actors you might come away with only loathing.

Yeah, he has a way of bringing humanity even to characters that are pretty unlikeable ("The Current War" also comes to mind). And he's very good at playing the villain, even though he doesn't do it often.

"Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy" was a great film, I agree.

I guess I'd have to say my favorite performances from BC have been in TV. Sherlock will always be No. 1 for me. He and Martin Freeman had fantastic chemistry. And I did love him in Hollow Crown, even though Richard III was such a beastly character. Patrick Melrose, Parade's End ... and let's not forget his first TV role, in Fortysomething (I have that one on DVD too).

I don't know if you've ever seen the filmed stage performances he did for National Theater, but "Hamlet" and "Frankenstein" were both exceptional (I saw them both in a theater, though I had to drive a bit as those performances weren't shown everywhere). Like I said, he has such range it's kind of hard to pick favorites.

But I saw the Pride and Prejudice 1995 BBC DVD Special Edition 2 Disc Box Set with Booklet. Besides the miniseries, it includes a 120 page booklet on the production, and a documentary. Perfect sick day movie!

Watched the series recently and loved it! It's the one with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, IIRC. Nice to have the additional booklet and documentary.
 
I learned of a film that I never knew existed until today: (Maybe Winnipeg knows it!)
