Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

:watch: Sinner ousted in the second round?!?!? Tourney just took a very interesting turn.

Novak for #25 or finally a Grand Slam win for Zverev???
Best news!!! I cannot stand Sinner and don't trust that he didn't dope. Praying for a Novak or Felix win!! But while Zverev gets side eyed for his past transgressions, it would be nice justice for him to finally win a Slam.

This is why I have no faith in Alcaraz & Sinner to break many of the records held by The Big 3! Today's players have to deal w/ more stress & a more physical game on the tour! They're already having trouble staying in tournaments due to injury & weariness! Retirements & withdrawals are almost expected at each tournament throughout the season by any & all players! Sinner has been more than accommodated considering his history & suspension! I don't enjoy watching him play at all! Just whacking the ball for the most part just isn't entertaining IMO! :grandpa: :40beers::p

Good for Félix!

After Victoria's loss I started doing chores and forgot he was playing (probably a defence mechanism after the sports week I lived through. 😭 )

Speaking of Mboko, I'm not impressed by Wim Fissette's work so far. Although bringing him in a Grand Slam is not ideal as it gives her no time to adapt.

Ruud was hard done by questionable call in the second set. I have to wonder how things would turn out if the call went his way in the tiebreak with him winning the tiebreak

And Félix wins making it into the QFs for his best ever Roland Garros result to date! Next up is Cobolli which will be a tough task for him, I'm a bit nervous, he will need to bring his A game.

ETA: With this win, Félix also guarantees that he will officially enter the Top 4 ranking in the world at #4. I think this is the second highest ranking ever for a Canadian man after Milos Raonic made it into the Top 3 at #3.

I love this for Vicky! Being around Serena can only be positive for her ✨

I'm going to put my money on Zverev to finally come through and win a Slam. It is likely the best shot he's ever going to get, and he's looked pretty dominant thus far. Only pushed to four sets once.

He is playing very well, so you may well be right. I wish i could be happier about it, but I kind of have the same feeling about Zverev as I do about Nikolaj Sørensen ... 😬

The Globe & Mail’s Catal Kelly wrote a terrible condescending opinion piece about Serena’s return.

I’m sure he would’ve written the same if Federer wanted to return (NOT).

This should work as a gift link:

Serena Williams’s comeback ushers in phase of sports where fame outweighs athleticism

Is it true? Venus has been gobbling up Wild Cards into events for years winning nary a match! That's the "epitome" on the subject! :p

Which part? No one has seen Serena play this year (except maybe for Rennae Stubbs who says nothing about it). When she retired she had only taken a few weeks to get back into tennis shape and was improving just not fast enough for her short timeline.

She gave so much to the sport, I say let’s give her grace and watch and see.

Venus only recently had an operation to deal with decades of undiagnosed endometriosis. She played her entire career with this debilitating pain and now that she’s free of that, she wants to enjoy tennis.

On Billie Jean King’s shoulders, she fought for equal pay, had a great career, and improved the sport for women players.

She recently played doubles with Leylah Fernandez, crowds loved to watch them and all had fun. And she didn't lose worse than many other players in singles.

Let them play until they stop making others money (which is apparently how everyone in tennis sees success nowadays).

:blah: Doing doubles in a smaller tournament hardly deserves this ridiculous drubbing, imo. Especially since a lot of singles players either skip doubles altogether, or withdraw from doubles if they start getting deep in the singles draw. And saying the return is based on a desperate need for attention and profits only (especially when her husband is considerably wealthier than even she is) and inimatating she has few athletic skills remaining is rather indefensible.

Even comparing her to Venus, who was never as good or as versatile as Serena, and struggled with illness for over a decade isn't warranted.
