Feel a bit bad for Muchova, her play is so beautiful to watch, but glad she's making a comeback after her wrist surgery. Still good for Pegula to not give up after being spanked that first set and down a break in the second.

Gotta give the edge to my snarky Sabalenka in the final though.

Rafael Nadal has announced his retirement from tennis; sad but not unexpected :(

I knew it was coming after he dropped out of the U.S. Open, honestly. Too many injuries the last couple of years. He's been sidelined more often than he's played. But I'm still sad to see it. One of my favorite players to ever grace a tennis court. (Andre Agassi will always be my No. 1, but Rafa is right behind him.)

I always liked Agassi but loved Pete Sampras.

Opposite here. I plastered my wall with Agassi posters as a teenager. Adored him, and still do. I enjoyed watching Pete play, but when they were playing each other I was firmly on Andre's side. It was a fun rivalry, much like Rafa and Fed.

I'm older so Borg was the KING & his poster was up on my wall back in '75! Years later Edberg was added! Gorgeous! 🥳

I always enjoyed the Andre and Pete rivalry. I preferred Sampras more as an athlete, but loved Andre's personality on and off court. My late 90s "tennis husband" was Alex Correjta though. :swoon:

They called it a rivalry, just like Fedal, but it really wasn't! It was a promotional thing IMO as Sampras dominated from early on at the 1990 USO; esp. in major Finals! It was the same w/ Federer! As good as he was, Nadal owned him very early on at 17! HC & grass couldn't save Fed at times! Roger changed rackets & got a bit of a reprieve while Novak was injured in 2017 taking 3 more majors & winning 5 or 6 H2H matches w/ Rafa B4 finally retiring a lit'l late in 2021! :cautious::40beers:🥳 :p

Although I was not able to catch the match, Coco Gauff really gave Sabalenka a run for her money. Sabalenka told Gauff afterwards,"I feel you".

Agree to disagree here. There were times that Andre really had Pete's number. (For instance, he beat Pete at the Australian Open twice.) But Andre obviously wasn't exactly what you would call dedicated to the sport for much of his career (of course, we now know it's because he had a love-hate relationship with tennis that teetered toward hate/rebelliousness more often than not). When they were both at their peak it was a beautiful thing to see them go toe to toe. I remember staying up pretty much all night long to watch them play the Australian Open semifinal in 2000. Now THAT was a match.

Tennis Channel's (and longtime Sports Illustrated contributor) Jon Wertheim suspended after comments about Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova's appearance were aired during coverave of WTA Finals (event was won by Coco Gauff).

Is anyone surprised? He's defended John Isner's politics.

I haven't kept up with tennis lately - congrats to Coco!
Coco Gauff showed supreme determination to come back from a set and a break down against Zheng Qinwen to win the season-ending WTA Finals.
In an enthralling encounter that lasted just over three hours, the American beat the Olympic champion 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in Saudi Arabia.
At 20 years old, she is the youngest player to win the tournament since Maria Sharapova exactly two decades ago, and the youngest American since Serena Williams in 2001.
"This means a lot to me," said third seed Gauff, who wins a total prize of $4.8m (£3.7m) - a record amount in women's professional tennis.

Saudi money? $$ It means nothing to them! They're swimming in it in the middle of a desert! Lucky I'm a Sr. & got to see the Big 3 make history! I'm slowly weening myself off the game; the ladies I have little clue what's going on! I saw it all though since the 70's! Eperienced it w/ Borg/McEnroe & Agassi/Sampras eras! Funny IIRC, $90 K was the to prize in 1982! The men & women have come a long way since just getting travel expenses in the Amateur days! :scream:  :p  :cautious:

I must be missing something! Wertheim may have been insulting, but it's worth all this vitriol? Will he lose his job ovet a slight? This is probably what rightwingers use as an example of overreach & being overly politically correct! :wall: :2faced::cautious:

This past weekend was one of the best ever in recent memory for Canadian tennis! Gaby Dabrowski became the first ever Canadian to win the WTA Tour Finals winning in doubles with partner, Erin Routliffe. And Denis Shapovalov finally won his second tour title in Belgrade going through qualies to win 7 straight matches and take the title! His first title in 5 years after losing many consecutive finals. Hoping this bodes well for 2025!

It’s not over - the Davis Cup and Billie Jean Cup are this month and Canada should perform well in both, if the players remain healthy.

It was nice to see Shapovalov lifting a trophy after so many disappointments. He's been one of my favorite players to watch when he's playing well and I'm happy that he might finally be realizing the tremendous potential he showed early on.

I am not sure that this article abiut Iga Swiatek's one-minth ban for using trimetazidine will be accessible to those without an onlune subscription to The New York Times, but I will quote a bit because it goes to why Valieva's ban is as long as it is.

I wondered why I hadn't seen much of IGA recently! :cautious:

I do tend to believe that the infractions by both Sinner and Swiatek were inadvertent. Hope they can play their way past the damage to their reputations.
