Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

:cheer2:

:cheer2:

So……no surprise if you’re seeing it again this weekend. Especially in IMAX. But are you getting one of the popcorn buckets? I saw both buckets in the lobby today. I bet the glove one is fun to eat out of. 🍿 😝

Yesterday, I saw Primetime. Being that it's the opening weekend, I'll put my review in spoiler.

Are you a Robert Pattinson fan? Were you fascinated by the To Catch a Predator shows on NBC? Then you'll like this film!

I give this film an 8.3/10. The film depicts the 2000s NBC series To Catch a Predator—a spinoff of Dateline hosted by Chris Hansen (Robert Pattinson)—and the exploitative nature of the show.

Warning: This film has graphic discussions of these online chats and there is one visual of blatant frontal adult male nudity.

What's good:
  • The acting performances by Robert Pattinson and Merritt Weaver (Producer Andie) were fantastic. I'm not 100% sure that the film is strong enough to get Pattinson into the Best Actor conversation.
  • IMHO, Skyler Gisondo (Decoy Dan) gave the best acting performance of the film, but I don't know if he can get into any Supporting Actor nominations being that the category is already stacked.
  • The film is shot and edited very well. The coloring added to the emotion of the film.
  • The film did a good job of showing how NBC really mainly cared about ratings and $$$.
What's meh/not good:
  • I'm not sure how well this film works with those who were too young to watch To Catch a Predator or audiences outside the U.S. - are this "sting operation shows" as much of a thing outside the 🇺🇸?
  • I don't think that the "point" of the film was exactly made clear. There were too many side plots. I'm don't think that we needed the issues about Chris Hansen's relationship with his family and his affair.
  • I've became sympathetic to Chris Hansen's reaction to the film. Apparently, his main motivation really was to investigate these predators and not "to become a star journalist".
  • The cameo performance by Jeff Zucker was

Box Office Mojo - U.S. Domestic Box Office: Weekend 39

So……I'm thinking theaters should want to keep Avengers Endgame: Encore for another week and even keep it in some IMAX screens. But next week is also Digger on IMAX......

It looks like Primetime wasn't really released outside of the U.S. But look at how well Heart of the Beast did - especially internationally! Was it Brad Pitt - even though film is about an 🇺🇸 Special Forces veteran and his combat dog? 🤔

Table update! 😃
$2B and $1B Films in 2026
1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day - $2.496B
2. The Odyssey - $1.751B
3. Toy Story 5 - $1.146B
4. Michael - $1.029B
5. The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie - $1.012B

Notable opening next week: NAZA (🇺🇸 limited release), Verity, and IT'S TIME FOR DIGGER!!!! TOM CRUISE!!! WHEEE!!!!!!

Pattinson was intense. He takes chances in his movie choices. Weaver and Gisondo were also excellent. But I kinda felt like I needed to take a shower after the movie...

As much as love comic book movies I will definitely think four or five times before considering seeing another DCU movie.

Just erasing two of the most iconic studio names in Hollywood history. I didn't think it was possible for me to hate this more than I already did but I was wrong.
im not sure if I hate it or love that all their crap going forward will have a different label. these people have crap taste and Maga energy.

A double feature today! 😀

The first film was Heart of the Beast. My overall rating is 8.5/10. Highly recommended, especially if you like stories about veterans and their combat dogs. 🫡 🐕

I’m about to go see Digger in IMAX. 🤠

Just saw Digger.

SIGH

Unless you’re a hard core Iñárritu fan, you can probably skip this.

I was so hopeful for this film and the cast did a great job……with what this was. The production design was really good.

The HUGH problem is that if Iñárritu wanted to create a black satire about the environment and how that issue is dealt politically, the story itself should have been more coherent. The film completely flips on you about thirty minutes in and you are 🤨 A LOT until about the last twenty minutes.

Some people actually started leaving about an hour into this film. My overall score: 5.5/10.

I’m going to see this next weekend with a friend. We met while volunteering at a local shelter!

Damn. Thanks for the review. Someone else on FB wrote that they really liked it. It is getting a very mixed reaction.

Just got home from watching The Social Reckoning.

Well, it’s better than Digger. But not by much.

Unless you’re a hardcore Aaron Sorkin fan, you can probably skip this.

Either Sorkin needs to either just write or just direct. Doing both made this whole film seem disjointed. The film just seemed like a series of random lectures…….then January 6th!!!!!! WHOA!!!!!! And Zuckerberg just……finally made one decision to shut accounts down? They showed no depth to what he was doing or thinking, which I think The Social Network did an excellent job with.

Jeremy Strong may think that his method acting is fantastic, but I think it’s coming across as a bit too much here. Also, Bill Burr’s performance is just annoying.

As much as I liked Mikey Madison in Anora and Jeremy Allen White in The Bear, I felt that they were miscast for these roles.

My overall score: 6.0/10.

Saw the Heart of the Beast today. Did not love it. It was more graphic than I expected it to be. I also thought they spoiled it in basically the very first scene. I was suspicious right away and my suspicions were confirmed maybe 10 or 15 minutes in. It was entertaining, and what a good “heart of the beast” it was. But meh.
