Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Saw Spider-Man and really liked it. It’s as good as Marvel gets as a character study, not just Spidey but the “villain” as well. The scenes between Holland and Zendaya just exude their real-world chemistry.

And the trailer for Doomsday is so exciting. It really helps if you know the zillions of characters from Avengers, F4, X-Men etc, I’m not sure how the film can be understood without backstory.

IMHO, I don’t think that it can really be understood if you go in with it being your first MCU film. It’s the main reason why I haven’t been able to 100% like Marvel’s multiverse stuff.

Saw the preview of ‘Cookie Queens’ recently in a theater. Looks interesting. There were a couple other previews (foreign languages) that were interesting. It was when I saw ‘Reading Lolita in Tehran’. When I see movies like that, the previews are interesting and I am saved from Hollywood’s WhamBam previews.
 
Saw Spider-Man BND again yesterday but in IMAX and it was wonderful! On the downside I was pelted with popcorn during the movie. It was a reminder why I stopped going to the all ages screenings of movies. But IMAX is the best way to see this movie. :respec:

Still, considering that only four movies crossed the $1 billion threshold in all of 2025, it's a positive trend. Especially when you consider that two of the biggest anticipated releases of the year aren't coming until December.

Sure, I guess it could have been worse. I heard a news report somewhere that things are not as good as they seem, because of the increase in ticket prices somewhat masking drops in attendance. Can't remember where I heard it, though...

It's harder to get people into theaters now. There are a lot more, less expensive, options out there. Still, I think going to the movies isn't quite obsolete just yet.

I don't think it's obsolete either. Just saying that looking only at the amount of money a film is generating doesn't necessarily tell the whole story.
 
Enjoying a double feature today! 🍿 😀

The first film was The Brink of War. Because it is in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Are you interested in a “good enough” film about the ending era of The Cold War? Are you 🤔 about Angel Films’ progress in distributing films? Then I recommend this film!

I give this film a 7.8/10. This film is about what happened at the 1986 Reykjavik Summit between Ronald Reagan (Jeff Daniels) and Mikhaïl Gorbachev (Jared Harris).

What’s good:
1) The film does a good job of explaining where and how the negotiations fell apart.
2) J.K. Simmons (George Schultz) was the best performance of this film.
3) Iceland looks really good.
4) I’ll admit that I was 😬 when Reagan tried to give the zinger about the Soviet citizens not being able to arm themselves and Gorbachev responded with, “At least our citizens don’t get to shoot us.” 😲

What’s MEH:
1) Neither Reagan nor Gorbachev look like the men in reality. At all.
2) Shallow point: Really? They couldn’t make Reagan’s hair darker? It’s not like it was blatantly obvious that it was dyed that black.
3) IMHO, the Raisa Gorbachevs vs. Nancy Reagan stuff could have been taken out. 🥱
4) So……..I guess the film was going to leave out, even in the epilogue, that the SDI “Star Wars” didn’t really come to fruition.
5) The film didn’t dig enough into exploring why the Soviet Union couldn’t develop their technologies about anything like the Americans could. 🫤

The second film I saw today was The Rivals of Amziah King. Because it is still in its wide release weekend in the 🇺🇸, I will put my review in spoiler.

Are you a Matthew McConaughey fan? Do you like Neo-Westerns? Do you have a tolerance for seeing hundreds (or maybe more!) of bees? 🐝 Then you’ll like this film!

I give this film an 8.5/10. Amziah King (Matthew McConaughey) is a local musician, beekeeper, and honey producer in a rural Oklahoma town. He teaches his skills to his former foster child Kateri (Angelina LookingGlass). When theft and tragedy strike the business, Kateri must seek justice from Amziah’s rivals, mainly Dob McCoy (Kurt Russell).

I overall enjoyed the story of this film, but the first hour was a bit too bloated. But the pace picked up a bit and the film got a lot better in the second half.

One warning, though: Early in the film, one of Amziah’s new employees gets badly injured when he is accidentally scalped by one of the machines. It was a tad gruesome to watch. 😬

Holland is likely guaranteed for two more Spider-Man films. Then, IMHO, he should probably move on. His next project is a Fred Astaire biopic - and he’s doing all the dancing. I don’t think that Holland deserves the bad flack that he’s gotten for The Odyssey.

I also think that the Spider-Man story has historically stayed with Peter Parker being young. I think Brand New Day is the oldest that Parker has ever been, correct?
 
Well… There was a tv series from the 70s starring Nicholas Hammond who I hope gets at least a cameo in a future Spider-Man movie. That Spider-Man was a newspaper reporter.
