Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Biopic is usually made after the person is long gone. It doesn't matter that Astaire didn't want one on his life. If Hollywood sees a chance to make money from a Fred Astaire biopic then they will make one.
He didn't mind making one about Vernon and Irene Castle. Which Irene was also involved in, so she clearly didn't mind.

It seems that Mondays are when the critics see the upcoming films in special “press showings”.

Some critics are already posting spoiler free reviews of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Apparently, it’s really good, looks stunning in Dolby, but felt a tad too long.

OH MAN!!! It will be interesting to see if this box office prediction really comes true.

Update - The critics’ reviews for Spider-Man: Brand New Day are officially coming in! 🎥 🍿 😀

I am staying away from reviews, trailers and explainer videos until I see it tomorrow. LOL

Saw Spider-Man Brand New Day yesterday and LOVED it! The movie is definitely different in tone from the other movies. There were people in Spider-Man costumes and with popcorn buckets! LOL Definitely a 9 out of 10! I really can’t find fault with the movie itself but that post credit scene earns a big EH?! Great now do Shang Chi 2 Mr Cretton! :slinkaway

Oh Olivia, How do I love thee?

There is speculation online on if Spider-Man Brand New Day will top Star Wars The Force Awakens box office total. BTW If you go see the movie keep on eye out for a little nod to Star Wars! LOL

Well, the good news is that I’m able to get a ticket to see Spider-Man later today. But I’m bummed that I could only get in the third row in one of the smaller AMC Laser theaters. I really wanted to see this in Dolby today.

If there’s a Spidey Suit popcorn bucket still available, I’m going to buy one. 🍿 I’m MEH on the tumblers, though.

Spider-Man is breaking all kinds of box office records! It made $168m just on Friday. It will be so interesting to see how much it makes by the end of the weekend.

There’s a documentary called Wild Inside, about the adventures of Flaco the owl, who escaped from the Central Park Zoo and lived for about a year in Manhattan. One of my NYC cousins saw it and said it’s supposed to be released more widely in the coming days.

Flaco’s movie

Update: I did watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day last night (Laser, 2D) and my overall score is 8.6/10.

This is probably the best MCU film since about 2022-23. The fight scenes are superb. IMHO, Tom Holland did the best job here out of all these films. I think they did a very good job of connecting Peter Parker back with MJ and Ned which if what they had to do to move them forward.

About Jean Grey: Sadie Sink was excellently casted and I understood the introduction. But if they were going to put this much of her in this film, I think some stuff needed to be taken out. Which leads me to……

Larger Nitpick: I think they could have done without having Yelena/Black Widow (Florence Pugh) in this film. And I think that the Bruce Benner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) stuff was just too much bulk that they didn’t need to use for the “indicator stuff”. Overall, there was just a bit too much in this film.

Shallow point - No other Spidey suit comes close to how good this one that Holland wears looked.

I saw the Odyssey. I really liked it, did no love it. Well done, great acting from many, felt long (and I am ok with long movies .
Back when 'The Conclave' was out - Ralph Fiennes had another movie at the same time 'The Return' with Juliette Binoche - A piece of the Odyssey story - what happens when he returns to Ithaca. Ralph Fiennes was excellent (and you saw all of him - in fine shape). Matt Damon paled compared to Fiennes, so that distracted me some.
I think 'Dunkirk' is the one of Nolan's best, I have not seen Batman. Also loved 'The Prestige'

The woman who was Damon's stunt double in The Odyssey is getting some credit for her role. :)

Slightly related - I’m glad that Stunt Design will be an Oscar category, debuting for films in 2027. Long overdue, IMHO.

I have to confess that I have never understood the extreme interest in all of the Spiderman movies in the various incarnations (including the Multiverse).

Let's see: You have a small-budget horror film, "Obsession" that became a financial and critical success, a movie sure to be mentioned at Oscar time doing boffo box office in "The Odyssey" and now "Spiderman" possibly finishing with staggering sums. I wondered if movies theaters might die after COVID but this summer looks promising indeed for the cinema.

I am not excited about Odyssey but I plan on seeing it. Just because. Prefer IMAX for this.

I came across the book Project Hail Mary at Barnes & Noble and I started reading it. It was very interesting, so I want to read the book before I see the movie. I don’t want to buy the book because it’s overpriced, IMO.

I saw ‘Reading Lolita in Tehran’ in a theater today. It was good but not great.

It is based on an autobiographical book by Azar Nafisi (they retained the names of real people in the movie). She was a professor of English literature at the university in Tehran. After the revolution of 1979 she returned from the USA to Iran because she loved her country. It was a struggle.

Many good things about it.

Acting by the main character and her students. That actress totally carries the movie.

I have never been to Iran. It was nice to see it on the screen. Tehran seems like a beautiful city.

The violence shown is horrifying but not gratuitous. It was done skillfully, in a controlled way. I appreciated that (and yet it drew gasps from the audience, which is a positive).

The story is told in four chapters- each chapter represents a book the women are studying. Lolita is one of those books. The author selected this in her title. I am not quite sure why but it does attract attention. It is important for books to have titles that attract attention. There may be more to it. The women talk about sex, older men taking advantage of it, and the unspeakable cruelty toward some of the women who were imprisoned.

They showed the situation well.

What was not done so well:

The movie spans 24 years (1979-2003). The characters never seem to age much.

The screenplay seems to lack flow. It may be due to the four chapters but at times I wanted to know more, even within a chapter.

The movie is barely 1 hour 40 minutes. It should have been longer , with more detail, particularly when Nafisi returns to the USA. There are two emotional scenes and they could have built more on those. May be the book explains it better. Now I want to read the book. Will look for it at the library.

The movie felt rather flat at the end to me. There is no real climax. I think there was plenty of room for that.

Still, I enjoyed the movie overall. It was good to learn about a country we hear so much about.

8/10
