I have the Fitzgerald translation from college and honestly think I'll stick with it. The poetic language is more to my personal taste, though I completely respect the perspective of making the story more accessible to modern readers. To be fair, I think this desire is what inspired Christopher Nolan to write the script the way he did, but it just didn't resonate with me. For context, I read the King James Version of the Bible and love the poetry of Donne and Milton.

Well, the idea is they're trying to recreate the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon from 2023... as in, "Dunesday." If I can handle being in a theater that long (I expect that both movies will clock in at well over 2 hours), I might take a crack at seeing both that day.

I understand - but the problem for Disney/Marvel is that Warner Bros. had already secured all the IMAX screens that weekend for Dune.

I believe for “Barbenheimer”, Oppenheimer had secured all the IMAX and the late night Dolby screens and Barbie had all the other Dolby screens. “Barbie” was okay with that because they knew that their film would be overall so much more popular anyway. I believe Barbie was given significantly more regular 2D/Laser screens then Oppenheimer.

This is the last Dune film. Villeneuve wanted to finish the series before he moves on to direct the next James Bond film.

Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to be released in December 2027.

Or at least, the last by Villeneuve. If it continues, it will be with someone else in the director's chair. And

So……the Dune tickets have to go on sale soon, right? Because I want to wait for those times that weekend to (hopefully) book a double feature.
 
I had to leave The Odyssey. The Polyphemus scenes were extremely disturbing, the IMAX sound was so overwhelming I had to put my fingers in my ears, and the overall intensity far outweighed any connection I could feel to the characters, even Anne Hathaway who is a very relatable actress.

DH left an hour after I did, not raised on Greek classics the entire story was confused and the time jumping didn’t help. So we both failed The Odyssey.

Listening to the Pod Save the World podcast where they are talking about people getting triggered about certain aspects of the casting of The Odyssey (the whole woke thing).

FFS the whole cast is talking in American accents :lol:. And Matt Damon definitely does not look Greek.

Thanks for the review. I am not high on Chris Nolan movies- didn’t like Oppenheimer at all, but liked the war movie about Duncan. I have been skeptical about the Odyssey and not sure if I want to see it. I always prefer a strong story, screenplay and acting to stunning visuals. Of course I like great visuals but not at the expense of other things. Now I may not see this movie or at least i will delay seeing it.
 
I don’t see movies very often. I am still interested in Discovery Day because usually I like Spielberg movies. Is it worth watching or is it a disappointment? My time is very limited at present. If I wait till Saturday it may not be running anywhere. I prefer not seeing it on a weekday this week.
 
I have to say as a retail employee nothing about the Doomsday trailer made me want to sacrifice my valuable Christmas season time off work to go see it in theatre. I wish I could be excited about it, but it just doesn't look interesting to me.

I haven't seen any of the Dune movies so I already wasn't planning on going to see that one in theatre.

FWIW I liked it a lot. The two leads, Blunt and O’Connor, are terrific and my permanent crush Colin Firth is definitely relishing playing a bad guy these days. It’s actually a hopeful movie. Go see it.
 
My neighbor and I have tickets to see Hadestown next week. The trailer looked like fun so what the heck.

I love Colin Firth, but as a bad guy? To me he will always be the ‘charming’ Mr. Darcy.

Ok I will tolerate it to see a good movie.
 
When I find a movie like Doomsday or Dune 3 to be less than compelling, but there are other reasons to see it, we'll wait for it to be on streaming. I think that's better than not seeing at all and missing a movie we might end up enjoying. Or spending $50 at the theater to see a movie we don't like. ($50 is tickets and snacks for two)
 
Colin played Michael Peterson, the wife murderer, in the recent series The Staircase. Not only did he do a perfect American accent, he was very charming/creepy.
