Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

it's so hot, im interesting in watching some non Christmasy Christmas movies. A Lion in Winter is definitely one of my favorites in that category. Another favorite is We're no Angels.

I’ve had We’re No Angels sitting on the PVR for ages I just haven’t watched it yet. It does feel like the kind of movie I would watch in the summer though and I am trying to clear as much off the PVR as I can before Summer Under the Stars next month so maybe I’ll finally watch it soon.

I recently saw Moonlight and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Both packed a wallop. I cried for like an hour after Portrait.

I’m thinking of rewatching Independence Day this evening. It’s free on Hulu, which I just cancelled but I have access for another few weeks.

There’s a ton of patriotic (or what I broadly call !) themed films that are available today on streaming:

Hulu: 1776, Glory, Lincoln, Independence Day; There’s a “Celebrating America” section with a variety of themes
HBO: John Adams miniseries
Netflix: All the Rocky films; There’s a special “USA 250!” section with a variety of themes
Pluto: Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick
Tubi: 1776, Glory, The Patriot, Independence Day

I’m glad to see a variety of things available.

I’m personally starting off with 1776 on Hulu.

Watching James Cagney strut and sing and act up a storm as George M. Cohan in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" right now on Turner Classic Movies.

Watched "Project Hail Mary" on Prime, and I'm glad I didn't spend $15 to see it on the big screen. I'm sure it probably looked good, but... sorry, I just thought the story was absurd, even for sci-fi. I enjoyed "The Martian," based on another of the same author's work, a lot better. Both similar in solitary men in space themes, but PHM was too cutesy for me.

Since dh and I are going to see Operation Mincemeat in NY this week, we decided to watch the 2021 film with Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen. I found it interesting and look forward to seeing how it gets turned into a musical. edited because the film obviously did not come out in 1921.

Re the conversation upthread about The Trouble with Angels, when we moved back east a couple of years ago, we looked at homes really close to the Ambler, PA estate that had been used for some exterior scenes of the convent. I was sad that it no longer has that estate look that it had in the movie. This is when it was for sale a couple of years ago.

Box Office Mojo - U.S Domestic Box Office: Weekend 27

WOW! Young Washington got $20M!!! I think of doing a double feature next Saturday with this and The Invite.

Minions & Monsters did as expected.

Toy Story 5 is currently at $764M.

I think that Michael will end up just below $1B in the global box office.

OMG @ the drop in Supergirl! This is a way better movie than the box office suggests.

YEP. Supergirl is looking like it's going to flop. It needs at least $315M to break even.

I think this was always likely to not be a blockbuster, but it was probably stupid of Warner Bros. and DCU to have it release in the middle of Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters. They probably should have released it in around mid-August to early September.

Notable opening next week: Moana and The Invite (Expands).

So I realize I'm behind the curve but is Obsession worth watching? I've heard so much hype for it but I'm generally not into horror unless it's really well done.

I admit being rather surprised by this opening. I saw practically no advertising for this movie, but I understand they targeted at more religious and conservative viewers than me. Will be interesting to see how it holds up since the r eviews were pretty anemic; but they are already talking about a sequel.

Young Washington appears to be produced by Wonder Project (owned by Amazon MGM) and distributed by Angel Studios.

For me, it’s probably worth watching, especially if Ben Kingsley is in it

There has been some growing backlash over the casting though. For me personally, it's one of the movies I've been looking forward to all year. Can't wait to actually get out into a theater and see it (it's been a while since I did that).

I think there are very few people who can actually rock a buzz cut. At least he doesn't look bad. Just... older. Which considering this movie has a 17-year time jump from Part 2, is probably why they went that route.

My favorite criticism is that it's not accurate because the actors don't have British accents. Um... it takes place in Greece and I doubt the complainers even know what a Greek accent sounds like.
