Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Variety - 2026 Cannes Preview 🤔

I think that a lot will be riding on the international films that are competing here, especially Fjord 🇷🇴/🇳🇴 and Fatherland 🇵🇱/🇩🇪 and how 🤩 Neon and Mubi will end up campaigning for them. We know what happened last year after It Was Just an Accident won the Palme d’Or.

Update: We have some first reviews! 😃 🍿 🎥

Fatherland 🇵🇱/🇩🇪 👍

Ashes 🇲🇽/🇪🇸 - WAIT. Diego Luna been directing films for awhile?! 🤯

Teenage S*x and Death at Camp Miasma 🤔

Parallel Tales 🇫🇷 👎

Cannes Festival Update: The awards ceremony is tonight.

Here’s the live stream on YouTube.

In addition to the chatter above, I’ve heard great reactions about Fjord and All of a Sudden 🇫🇷.

Got my tickets for The Mandalorian & Grogu! 💙

I saw it this afternoon. I had tempered expectations as the reviews were lukewarm. I am definitely a fan of the Star Wars franchise, but I thought the plot was basically non-existent and that for all the many action sequences it really dragged.

I still found Grogru irresistible in every scene though.

So……it looks like Obsession is getting a lot of hype right now. Has anyone seen it? The premise makes me wonder if it’s too much like some of the guys I knew when I was younger. 😧

I really like some horror films but it has to be supernatural/psychological horror and not slasher or gory. And body horror is a no. I’m still hoping to be able to see Hokum before it leaves theaters.

NOPE - not into horror movies anymore plus a mass produced gadget that grants wishes?! eh-eh

I went to see TDWP 2 yesterday, and they showed the Toy Story trailer. Looks like a good premise, although I am amused that Disney, who owns multiple streaming services, is making tablets and screens the evil thing.

I had to look up ‘body horror’ (new to me). So would zombie movies be body horror?

It can - it depends on the story. I'll say this about my personal feelings on body horror: I didn't enjoy watching The Substance (2024) despite Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley performing so well it the film.

I saw The Mandalorian and Grogu today. My overall score is 8.0/10 - as a Star Wars fan. It's an overall fun popcorn time. But I think that you really need to have already understood the Star Wars universe to be able to follow this film. If you're a Star Wars novice, I recommend watching the films in release order for your first watch.

I did feel that the plot was a little too empty for two hours. I felt that there should have been more of a complete story in why Mando and Grogu needed to go on this mission.

Pedro Pascal didn't annoy me as much in this film.

Grogu is adorable. Obviously. 😊 I'm considering buying a plushie.

We saw The Mandalorian and Grogu too!

I enjoyed it as well. I did wonder as I was watching it if people who hadn't watched at least the first season of The Mandalorian would get as much out of it as I did. I think it should have been season 4 of the show tbh.

Mr. Mac's reaction was "meh." I have to say that I don't disagree with some of the criticism the movie has gotten about pacing and such. I just think they are nitpicky and didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the movie. So I guess it just depends on how these things impact your viewing enjoyment.

Box Office Mojo - U.S. Domestic Box Office: Weekend 22

🤯 at Backrooms!

So……what’s going to be the first $1B film of 2026? Will it be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Or will it be Michael? 🤔

Keep in mind that Michael won’t be released in Japan 🇯🇵 until June 12.

Meanwhile, that’s a WELP for the second week of The Mandalorian and Grogu. And IMAX has announced that the film will be booted early from its screens. 😱 😬

Notable opening next week: Scary Movie 🫣 🙃, Power Ballad 🎤 🎶, and Masters of the Universe 🗡️ 💪.
