Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

I’m enjoying a double feature this afternoon. The first film was The Devils Wears Prada 2. My score is 8.3/10. A film with Meryl Streep, Kenneth Branagh, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci is always a good idea. I’m personally MEH about Anne Hathaway.

Overall, this was a pretty good sequel. They left the ending with enough to maybe do a third film. I’m personally 🤷🏻‍♀️ about the idea.

The second film I saw today was The Sheep Detectives. Because it is still in its opening weekend, I’ll put this review in spoiler.

Are you a fan of Hugh Jackman, sheep, or whodunnit tales? Then you’ll like this film!

I give this film an 8.9/10. Hugh Jackman plays George, a shepherd who only uses his sheep to sell wool and reads crime mysteries to them as entertainment. When he is murdered, it’s up to the sheep to use what George has read to them to help the town’s lone policeman find the killer.

The film is comical but has poignant moments - especially involving the “winter sheep”. The film also does a great job of using CGI for the sheep.

I saw it on the weekend and really enjoyed it.

Won't add much more because I don't want to spoil it. But I agree with you. However I will add my own spoilers for those who have seen it.

The chicken crossing the road cracked me up.

While funny it definitely had a lot of emotional moments. I saw someone posted a Tiktok after having seen it. They were crying and said "I thought it was going to be a funny movie about sheep". What was nice was one of the people involved in the animation was commenting and thanking everyone for the lovely comments.

I watched a movie on Netflix called the Drama? It had Rob Pattinson in it and it was about a couple about to get married when she reveals to him something about her past that bothers him................I did not like it all. Boring IMHO. 5/10

Also watched "Thrasher" about a Florida hurricane disaster...........it was like a "Jaws" wannabe, with a lot of folks getting by sharks along the way..........also kinda silly. 5/10

Watched I have no Choice, a Korean film, also not great, a 6/10

Any thoughts on a good movie to watch that is available through a streaming service?

The last one I watched on streaming was Matilda the Musical. Really enjoyed it. My choir is doing a few of the songs from it at the moment.

I saw the Devil wears Prada2 today in a theater near me. I was underwhelmed and even bored in the first half.

I found Ann Hathaway’s OTT acting annoying and she was in nearly every scene. She cooled down in the second half and we got to see the other actors including Streep and Blunt who were not as ‘LOUD’ as her (figuratively speaking).

Was it poor direction or just poor acting, in an effort to create comedy?

Streep and Blunt were both good but they were in supporting roles. Meryl actually plays the Devil, so why such a minor role for her? Why didn’t they change the title ? I thought the original was much better.

I am not a fan of comedies with a few exceptions and the original was among the exceptions.

I was wondering why did they make this sequel? To create Nostalgia? I was happy to see Meryl Streep (although most on this board hate her, and they will hate her again if she gets nominated).

The acting was good in general, except Hathaway’s. I have liked her in other movies.

One scene I liked was between Anne and Meryl standing in front of The Last Supper painting.

Another was when Anne’s assistant ‘steals’ key information by dropping her phone.

Overall I couldn’t wait for it to end.

After coming home I looked up RT. They gave it a high score and it seems people liked it. I saw one critic who agreed with me (2/4).

Some sequels work but I find it risky to make a sequel. Usually the original is better. Now I want to see the original again (on you tube).

Saw ratings on IMDb

Devil2 - 6.7 (in line with what I felt)

Michael -7.7 (not seen yet)

Boys - 8.6? - has anyone seen this? I watched the preview. Looks a bit odd- is this about a Trump like figure? Too loud and probably violent. I would like to know more about this before I risk my 2-3 hours to see it

The problem/concern I have with The Mandalorian and Grogu is that I really didn't care for the last season of The Mandalorian. I just didn't think it was very good and what I'm seeing from the reviews so far it doesn't really feel like the movie is going to be much different. I hope the people who go to see it have a good time, but I'm going to be skipping this one.

Reviews from people who are fans of the franchise say the movie has issues (pacing, no real plot) but definitely some fun parts. Sounds like a movie to wait for streaming to watch.

That said, I have a gc for the movies and it's our anniversary in a week, so maybe we'll go see it in a theater after all.

Love You, Miss You (Alison Janney. Andrew Rannells, Bonnie Hunt)

Saw Mandalorian and Grogu and loved it! I think the movie has its own charm. The universe isn’t going to come to an end if these two aren’t successful with the task they set out to accomplish and I find that refreshing. The kid also has a bigger role than just be comic relief. Think of it as a really long episode of The Mandalorian.

Update: According to AMC, the run time is apparently 2:52. 🤔

I have my tickets for a double feature for Memorial Day afternoon - an early screening of Pressure and then Mandalorian and Grogu (regular laser projection) afterwards.

I want to see someone with one of those AT-AT popcorn buckets. How are they eating with it in the theater? Are they able to collapse it onto their lap?🍿 🤔

I wouldn’t mind getting one of those buckets but unfortunately popcorn disagrees with my stomach.
