From Marin's Instagram (translation from Japanese):

Harima Uno and Shinya Honda

Formed an ice dance team, I have decided to try competing in the new season.

It’s strange that proper nouns continue to be a weak point of machine translation.

They have been training as ice dancers for the past 1.5 years with an aim of competing in the Olympics!

Some interesting notes about new ice dance team: Marin Honda & Shoma Uno

- Since October 2024, when they made the decision to form an ice dance team, they have been training in ice dance with the goal of competing in the Olympics.

- “I never even thought about it when I was a single skater,” shoma said, adding that the turning point came when the two of them skated in “One Piece on Ice” together.

- They have been working with Misato Komatsubara, a former ice dance champion in Japan

Japanese is always going to be notoriously difficult for a machine to translate because it requires so much context/knowledge of kanji readings which is why we need to show our appreciation to Japanese speakers who translate for us

The press conference was both informative and interesting. It lasted one hour so the summary below is just a gist and a small part of it. The entire presee conference is available to watch on YouTube (the talk is in Japanese).

It was Shoma who suggested to Marin that they aim to participate in the Olympics together.

They both have no regrets about quitting as singles skaters. They have a lot of respect for each other and want to become partners that people think are the perfect match.

They used Shoma's show, "Ice Brave", as an opportunity to showcase their best skills as ice dancers at each point.

Shoma: "There are no jumps in ice dancing, so it’s quite different from what I’ve built up over the years. That’s exactly why I felt it was closer to the kind of skater I’ve always wanted to be.

They talk about all sorts of interesting things. They both repeatedly said they strongly respect each other and really want to bring out the best in each other.

They talk about how training for ice dance is different from singles. And How difficult it is (in a different way). They saw IM dancers spending many hours just for 10 seconds of the program, and as they train, they continuously revise the program by editing the music, changing the elements, and so on.

There have been several discussions about who will be their coach, but they will not reveal anything until a decision has been made. Their nickname will be Shomarin, which has been used by their fans.

Shoma: To be honest, I think anyone could bring out just how amazing Marin’s skating is. But when I imagine her skating at the top level with some other guy, I just can’t bring myself to accept that. I definitely want to be the one standing next to her. I think any normal person would feel the same way. That’s why I made this decision. 😂

KanaDai inspiration. It might work even better. Because Shoma has.... how to put it , let's say sharper stuff than Dai in terms of personality. He wasn't quiet about the decisions of J-federation when he didn't like them. It helps in sport. Right now there are no "favourite" of someone in power in Japanese ice- dancing. So Shomarin might escape the corrupted judging.

Yuma Kagiyama is set to perform in the PIW (Prince Ice World) show in Saga, Japan, on June 27-28, 2026.
He is planning to skate to a program that he has choreographed himself.☺️
