In Memoriam

I thought one of her greatest gifts (at least for me in my 20's) was the advocacy for reproductive freedom and access to birth control. Later on the equality in workplace.

How sad she must have been to see the backward movement in rights. (But that is PI territory)

Gloria Steinem has died, age 92. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/03/....-VA.RmTN.XbJfxdXd6Ddm&smid=nytcore-ios-share

This one feels personal. I was honored to give her a tour of the US Holocaust Museum after opening 1993. It was a Saturday and I only had childcare for two hours, which of course she was understanding about.

She was extremely smart and as the article says, deeply empathetic. A life well lived.
My mother, who passed away last year, knew Gloria Steinem from Smith College and mentioned numerous times what a leader she already was and how everyone knew she was going places. RIP.

A story I read about Gloria Steinem that impressed me, was how, when Kate Miller was outed as bisexual in 1970, Steinem attended a press conference with her and stood holding her hand in solidarity with her. An incredible gesture of allyship at a time when being an out bisexual was very controversial. I believe Millet recounted the incident in her book Flying.

One for Brits and Aussies of a certain age. Richard O'Sullivan, star of Man About the House* and Robin's Nest, has died age 82.

*Man About the House was the British original that became Three's Company in the USA.

Otto Jelinek, a former cabinet minister and world-champion figure skater, dead at 86 (Sept. 6):
OTTAWA - Otto Jelinek, a former world-champion figure skater and federal cabinet minister, has died at the age of 86.
“He was quite the ambitious guy,” his younger brother Henry said Sunday, a day after Jelinek’s death. “He was also sincerely and strongly a Canadian guy, who did everything he could to help this country.”
Jelinek was born in Prague in 1940, and his family fled Czechoslovakia’s communist government, arriving in Canada in 1952.
Jelinek and his sister Maria represented Canada in paired figure skating at the 1960 Winter Olympics in California.
In 1962, the pair won an emotional gold medal back in Prague, as champions of world figure skating. Henry said his siblings made the family proud by disproving the communist regime’s propaganda of being the best system in the world.
The pair toured with the Ice Capades entertainment show while Jelinek became a sports commentator for CTV. He also started a company manufacturing hockey and figure skates.
Jelinek died peacefully Saturday at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, Ont., after living with Parkinson’s disease for nearly 20 years, his brother said. “He took it with great heroism and dignity, to the very end.”

This might be more familiar for folks in the Chicago area, but for those who listened to WGN radio back in the day, Judy Markey, from the Kathy and Judy show, has passed away.

Do I remember right that he also designed some skater costumes back in the day? If so, does anyone know which costumes or skaters he dressed?

I saw something today about his death being investigated as a suspected overdose. So sad.

In rehab too...awful. I was reading that he has suffered from panic attacks from a young age. It is easy to see how you can fall prey to medicine that calms you.

I guess drugs were snuck in somehow. I’ve known people who went to residential drug rehab and there are usually hard rules about what can be brought. And they will block out anything that possibly be used as drugs. We mailed a “care package” to them and it was taken apart before they received it. There were no food items or personal care items like hairspray allowed.

I was saddened to hear of his death, but also sadly not surprised. He has long struggled with mental health issues, and been very open about it at times. In and out of rehab and other treatment programs, working on his spiritual self, trying to refocus. His sister is very successful (model Kaia Gerber, looks just like her mom) and they were tight, and from what I can tell his parents were there for him as much as they could. Maybe there will be more details on the exact circumstances of his death, but I think in the end it's cumulative, both physically and mentally. So sad.

I was also surprised that he died while in rehab and that this wasn't getting more attention since rehab is supposed to prevent those types of outcomes. I did a little bit of digging (with the help of AI).

He had only checked in at 10 pm the night before (about 11 hours before he died), apparently already high / under the influence. The processes of preventing someone from bringing in drugs aren't entirely foolproof. He was also apparently living in a separate house on the grounds rather than in a hospital-like detox ward. Seems like more of a residential treatment facility than an inpatient detox with 24/7 monitoring.

I wasn't going to post anything, but I see that other people had the same questions I did so I can possibly save the effort (and AI energy/water costs).

It's tragic :(. I do still have some questions about what happened and whether any part of it was preventable, but I suppose those details will emerge.

Another 30-something female former child actor is gone this year. This one hurts a lot, Hayden was great in everything I saw her in but unfortunately she had been going through a really rough time lately. No cause of death reported so far. Her brother died of a heart defect a few years ago. RIP, my condolences to her daughter...

Associated Press (Aug. 17):

Update - Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Revealed as Toxic Effects of Fentanyl and More; Death Ruled an Accident

“The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol and Quetiapine,” the coroner’s official statement said, adding that there were “no signs of trauma” that would have contributed to death. “The manner of death has been ruled accident.”

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid; 4-ANPP is a chemical intermediate used to illegally manufacture fentanyl; Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine better known by its brand name Xanax; Methocarbamol is a prescription muscle relaxant; and Quetiapine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

😔

So……it’s typical for drug rehabs to receive those while still under the influence? Wouldn’t any treatment be useless until the person at least has the substances completely out of their system? Shouldn’t a detox be required before admission? 🤔
