Ilia Malinin Fan Thread!

I'm sure he does, he likes interacting with fans, heck he's making content like this probably for the fans

I guess the uncomfortable thing was that this person was able to call his phone live on air
Smart to block the person or really, any troll or hater.

Ilia went live last night

Big news of the stream, he spoke his mind with negative feelings about some of the recent news on changes ISU is planning (like new GP final qualification proposal, scale of values changes, not listening to skaters): https://www.reddit.com/r/FigureSkat...ed_ilia_how_he_feels_about_the_isus_proposed/

  • He posted a white heart emoji and a fist pump emoji on his IG story; those are apparently program hints
  • he might be skating to a kpop song
  • new favorite jump: toeloop
  • One set of his costumes is being made by someone who has never made figure skating costumes before --- the designer reached out to him and offered proactively, he accepted
  • He offered an opinion on the 6.0 judging system: fully opinion based and biased
  • He was surprised to realize that he fits into some of his old costumes, may use them for galas this year
  • His "future rain" gala program from a year or so ago was choreographed by him and Tommy Steenberg
  • may be planning a program to music from an artist named Käärijä
  • may do a babymetal gala program for a japan competition this year
  • Promising behind the scenes footage of costume fittings process this year
  • there was some confusion about whether Ilia's costumes were displayed at USFS fashion event since USFS asked for them and he sent them
  • planning a halloween cosplay to cat noir or jack frost
  • he cannot read an analog clock
  • the crazy hater person who called his phone last stream has continued to call him repeatedly over last few days
  • he watches JGP events
  • he has to re-apply to george mason university due to taking too much time off

he played 3 hours of fortnite

Kao Miura has a series of essays in a Japanese publication, and this time he talked about his training experience with Ilia and his parents that took place over the last 2 weeks.
He wanted to know why Ilia's jumps are so consistent, and the things he discovered about Ilia's jumps are very interesting, so I have translated that part below.

“Training Expedition” with the Malinin Family in Washington: What Did Kao Miura Learn from the “Quad God”?

I translated Kao Miura's article about his visit to Ilia's rink, which is on the US Men 2026-27 thread. It's an interesting piece and well worth a read if you're an Ilia fan.

The spa they visited posted an Instagram message about their visit:

Now, if you carefully look at the photo of their visit to the ramen restaurant, you notice that they were both wearing lapel mics.

It is quite possible that Japanese media were covering Kao's visit — they really love Ilia too — and we may find out more about his visit. No, I haven't heard anything concrete yet, but that's my guess, lol!

I don't have time to write down everything that Ilia said on Twitch today, but I do need to mention this:

He started ballet lessons (one hour) to improve his line and posture. 👍😆
Can this imply type of his program for this season?
He also said he did a one-hour workout today — didn't he say before that he'd do all his workouts on the ice?

Well I will do this instead of working lol

  • He did ballet for the first time in awhile, a one hour session
  • the goal of ballet is to improve his lines/posture; based on what he said this is just him being driven to improve: video clip
  • he may do content/vlog a ballet training once his instructor and him are more comfortable since this was their first meeting
  • once again said program reveals coming soon, but there will be no more hints or clues on stream
  • in response to ISU getting rid of a jumping pass, he has made a new type of jump that he is adding to his programs. it is speculated to be some kind of choreographic jump
  • he has also invented a new trick that is going in a program -- some kind of new backflip variant he hasn't shown before [so not a regular backflip, one foot landing backflip, or an extended foot grab/blade grab backflip he did at SOI)
  • he has ideas for exhibition programs but hasn't worked on them yet
  • no vlog or content with Kao Miura forthcoming, they were too busy during their time together
  • last week was first time he skated his programs
  • this week is first time he's doing full runthroughs of programs and is having stamina issues
  • if he had to dye his hair an unnatural color, it would be purple
  • favorite evanescence song: My Immortal
  • he has not practiced quints in awhile, if he does commit to practice them fully it would be in a season when he's not skating [i guess this kills off that for now]
  • he talked through his training day today--
block 1: 2 hour practice; block 2: 1 hour ballet; block 3: 2 hour practice; block 4: 1 hour workout
He described this as ramping up his training and then when in full gear of season, he will go up to 6 hours of practice per day [so I guess a third on ice block]
  • he got nerdy about skates and talked through them with chat; he goes for balance between stiffness to jump and flexibility for spins; apparently his custom skates cost $2,000 [I thought he was sponsored by Risport, this made it sound like he's paying out of pocket]
  • he got a large amount of cash donations from viewers; in addition to thanking them, as a token of gratitude he did some backflips in his room
  • he was going to release merch, but that's now on hold because the people he was working with did not work out and he needs to find a new team to work with
  • he sang some songs on stream
  • he seems to be seriously learning video editing and talked through the tools he uses [canva business for thumbnails, capcut business, Da Vinci for VFX/color/motion graphics]

Has Ilia mentioned why he didn't attend the Styling 2027 event? I was kind of surprised he wasn't there, given his red carpet appearances at Art on Ice and elsewhere.

2 streams ago, he said he skipped all of champs camp this year because Kao Miura came to train and visit him

In related -- his costumes ended up in the Saatva Boston store at a styling event activation run by Saatva: https://www.reddit.com/r/IliaQuadg0dMalinin/s/DCg5wdWBp7

still nobody seems to confirm if his costumes were actually displayed at the styling event

Short update on Jacob Sanchez from his Summer Sizzler media interviews:

Jacob talks about Ilia in the above interview:

Q: You’re good friends with Ilia Malinin. How has he influenced your skating?
Sanchez: Ilia has had a tremendous effect on my skating. Being able to grow up with him, from when we were little, all the way to this day, it’s super-inspiring. We met when we were very little. Having that friendship build, and be as strong as it is right now, it’s really cool. And Ilia has given me all of this advice when it comes to competing under pressure. He’s helped me navigate myself, and navigate different strategies that I can use. Even day to day, I’m always able to reach out, and he’s always there for me. It’s really cool to have somebody like him in my close circle, and it’s something I value a lot. I hope–and I will work for–to hopefully, in 2030, be on that Olympic team with him.

Q: Have your Twitch streams with Ilia helped you connect with fans?
Sanchez: Yes. The Twitch streaming is so much fun. It’s so nice to be able to do something that I love, which is video games, while also sharing that with an audience. And I’ve gotten so many positive comments and messages.

Kao Miura Reveals the Malinin Method: The Purpose of Keeping the Right Hand* Back
(Note: Kao uses the Japanese word for 'right hand', but I think he actually means 'right arm', so I have used 'arm' in my translation below.)

(- You came back from training camp with Ilia.

I (Kao) learned about jumps and the themes he (Ilia) set for practice, and I strongly felt his passion for skating—it was a very meaningful camp.)

- Things you've been incorporating into your practice from the experience - is there any the Malinin Method you learned?

(If you've been watching him closely during all his jumps, you'll notice that Ilia always keeps his right arm still). He “keeps” his right arm still until the moment of takeoff. (Maintain your balance, pull your right arm back, and hold it there without moving it until the moment you jump)
I tend to extend my hand too soon. Also, while many Japanese skaters have the image of jumping straight up, he taught me that jumping with a curve requires less energy, so that really changed my approach.

(What are the things you found most beneficial?

If you bring your arm in too quickly, your axis gets off. This can result in popping or truly random jumps, so by holding your right arm steady and letting it go with the rotation naturally, you will get consistency.)

What proportion of what you learned came from Malinin versus his parents?

The entire family was consistent in what they taught me. Whether it was lessons from his dad and mom or advice from Ilia, they all said the same things each time, so I was able to have very productive practice sessions.

How did you spend your time with Malinin?

We were together constantly, both during training and outside of it. He took me to all sorts of places, and we talked a lot.

What did you sense about “Ilia’s passion for skating”?

He’s a Skeota (Japanese slang, means figure skating nerd)(laughs). (My note: Skeota is abbreviation of Skating Otaku). He’s watched and knows so many skaters, including juniors, and I just feel that he absolutely loves skating. Also, the advice he gives—like pointing out common mistakes Japanese skaters tend to make, why your performances can become erratic, or explaining that wasting energy means you won’t be able to land jumps in the second half—is delivered in a very smart way. He’s smart—incredibly smart. He's incredibly trustworthy.

Malinin himself once said, “I have some things in common with Kao.” Were there any similarities you noticed this time?

Since new programs from various skaters have been announced and are now available to watch, when we watched them together, I felt that our tastes—like which skates we liked or when we’d say, “This skater is great”—were quite similar.

Was Malinin himself doing well?

He’s doing great. He’s been doing well since around April.

Did you talk about the Olympics and the Prague World Championships?

We did, and actually, he really rubed salt in my wounds (laughs). It was so funny when he showed me a TikTok where I'm being teased.

---
I couldn't agree more that Ilia is a skating otaku. I've seen him come to watch practices even when it wasn't his group, and come out to watch performances of other skaters, even young ones, in shows. He just seems to love skating so much.

BTW what kind of Tiktok clips did Ilia show Kao!?😂

Maybe your alter ego isn’t the person you need to defeat… maybe it’s the person you’ve been afraid to become.

My sister is allergic to cats but has still had at least one, if not two, pretty much her whole life.
