I thought Baba Yaga is a female, otherwise it would be a dedushka/deda Yaga. I am confused about Kolyada’s attempt to portray a female.

:encore:gender bender. Kolyada is progressive...:smokin: plus if you remember, in most soviet films a man-actor played the part. a jewish man to be exact, to save on nose make up.

My only beef with this programme is the "made in China" telescopic broom.. Farmers markets still sell normal brooms.....

I never realised that it was played by a male. I naively thought that the woman was really that weird looking. The male’s face, that explains it.

Nothing wrong with telescopic broom. One needs to be progressive. :)

Have you ever wondered what would happen to the traditional baba Yaga’s house (the one on the chicken leg) if the leg got arthritis? As a child I wondered, but no one could give me the answer. Maybe because I didn’t ask anyone from Russia.

The classic "избушка на курьих ножках" The Hut on Chicken Legs, has 2 chicken legs. So if one becomes bad, the other works. If both don't work, the hut is placed on a stack of pancakes (russian blinys) and the Hut will sit on the stack and turn on butter (but the pancake part is often omitted, and is part of original mythology).

When the entry door faces a Visitor - it's facing a Living World. When the entry door faces the other way (with its back to a Visitor) then it faces the World of the Dead. You can come in from the Living side, get inside the Hut, the Hut turns, and you come out of the front door into the World of the Dead, and can't come back.

Thank you, Tinami. That’s interesting. One learns every day. Such an important bit of knowledge. ;)
(Weird, I remember it standing only on one leg, but logically there must be two because legs always come in pair).

Well, as far as knowledge, the stacks of blinys (pancakes) where the top one rotates on butter is good to know, if you don't have right supplies and need to have something heavy to rotate using two flat objects with oil in the middle does the trick.... The chicken legs are kind of useless.

Some times on can see a one-leg Hut on a play ground, or in an amusement park.... that means the construction guys put the Hut on a tree trunk, because they were either too lazy to make the legs, or stole leg wood for themselves.... But it in folk-legend it has two legs.

What kind of child thinks about arthritis? Who are you??

But thanks to both of you for informing us about the hut on chicken legs facing The World and Death. Not to mention the legless hut rolling on a stack of pancakes. I needed to learn these things shortly before bedtime.

Well, my grandmother used to have arthritis and complained frequently about her knees. Baba Yaga was on TV with her weird looking house when I was sitting at my grandmothers living room. So watching the house standing on that scary looking chicken leg (or legs) made me think whether the house could have arthritis too. In the film Ivan is asking the house to move with its face to him and its back to the forest. Baba Yaga immediately asked the house to turn the other way round. Ivan immediately repeated his request and so did baba Yaga. It went like this several times. Within a short time the house has done a lot of moving, so the it wasn’t that huge leap to be wondering whether it can get arthritis like my gran.
