Relentless heat and a dearth of rain are having a punishing effect on some of Europe’s most vital rivers. The waterways have tumbled to record lows in places, in a crisis so severe it can be seen from space.

Stark satellite images reveal dramatically shrunken waterways weaving through parched landscapes. Low water levels have exposed vast stretches of riverbanks, as well as long sandbars usually hidden deep beneath the surface.

Desperate water shortage in Puerto Rico

A major humanitarian crisis is unfolding in a San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hundreds of thousands of people in and around the American city are facing rolling water shutoffs brought on by an historic drought. NBC News’ George Solis is on the ground there tonight.

Standing in a field on his southern England farm, James Baird pointed to the ground where the earth had split into deep fissures.

"You'd lose your arm down some of these cracks," Baird, a "nature friendly" crop farmer in West Sussex, said Tuesday.

Baird, 56, has farmed for four decades, but he said he's never seen a summer like this one. His cereal harvest finished weeks earlier than usual. Crop yields at his farm, Stroodelande, are down 25 per cent.

Good. It has been 105-106 for a couple of days in Wichita. I can't imagine trying to navigate these temps without cooling. Thank heavens the busses opened up rides for free so the homeless and those without cool air could go to different cooling centers.
