Dangers of a Trump Presidency--Part 7

They had a segment on it last night on MSNBC and had interviewed a suburban mom for that purpose. She's convinced it's all true because somehow there are photos. It was scary as hell to watch. How do we fight that once Trump is gone?
I saw that interview.

It sounded to me like she had been watching doctored kiddy porn published by the Qfolks. In which case, I hope someone jails them for a long time. Having Kiddy porn is not legal.

Here is a link to the story of a man who got drawn into it and left.

Its sometimes interesting to hear from people on the ground who are affected by what Trump does. My co-worker talked with a person we work closely with who works at the VA and she said that due to Trump's executive order they are not only not allowed to do any diversity trainings, they aren't allowed to discuss diversity and issues of racism in any trainings. She said the sudden requirement that none of this even be mentioned felt like Nazi Germany to her.
Our Advisory Councils (black, Hispanic, LGBTQ, women) are to hold any lunch and learns until the EO is better understood.

While @Tony Wheeler doesn't care about ratings, Trump does, exactly as I said he would. He's raging that Biden apparently had a million more viewers even with Trump on 3 different NBC platforms. Certainly has his priorities straight doesn't he when YKW is soaring again.

We have the youngsters to thank once again for outsmarting Trump. They had all of their electronic devices tuned into ABC and Biden's town hall. I wish I had thought of it. I didn't think about ratings at all, TBH. I love it!

Lol you have to be Nielsen to effect ratings as has been mentioned. Tik Tok has nothing to do with Biden beating Trump. Americans are voting for Biden- decided he should be president. That’s why Nielsen ratings were good.

Um so the CA wildfire federal money is now allotted. Trump just wanted Gavin Newsom to get on the phone and beg. What a sick man.
That's exactly what I thought. He had it denied originally so it would force Newsom to call him and publicly thank him. To Newsom's credit, because getting the money for the state is more important than personal pride, he did it. And so now we will get the money. It's sad it has to be done this way. (And hopefully after January, never again.)

As far as the dissolve-the-electoral-college discussion goes, I understand the desire to dissolve it. But I don't see this as being plausible. I mean, the electoral college is an integral part of the voting process. Therefore, I would think it would require a constitutional amendment to be changed, which would require a 2/3rds majority vote; and why would 2/3rds of the the states or 2/3rds of Congress support the dissolution of the electoral college when it benefits more states than it hurts?

One day, maybe. In an editorial by Friedman that I read a while back, he said that Texas is going to turn blue & when it does the electoral college will swing democrat with it. (The implication being that the state is really moving toward a democratic majority long term). If that happens, then the large number of lower-population states that lean Republican may be ready to have a serious discussion about a new system. Friedman's theory was that it might be based on congressional district rather than popular vote; but regardless, it would be a very serious discussion because--again--I think you would need 2/3rds of the states to support it.

In the short term, I think it would help both parties to look at the issues they are running on and ask themselves why they are not persuading voters in such obviously distinct geographic areas. Instead of pouring millions of dollars into Florida for the umpteenth time or making false promises about bringing back a half-century old factory system in the Great Lakes, etc.; maybe ask what kinds of policies the party can really get behind that would appeal to people who have a very different lifestyle than their traditional base.

Also I find it ironic that there is outrage about the electoral college when our primary system essentially allows a handful of states to select the winning candidate for each party because after only a few primaries, everyone who is behind runs out of money and folds.

One good reason to abolish the EC is to get rid of this inaccurate idea of red states v. blue states. It forces this fake picture of America.

Here's one interactive map that is more accurate:

And another:
Very nice. Of course, they have no data for many places (including a good chunk of the region where I live). So a different way of looking at things. But also not accurate.

Still, very nice.

I do think that to get a real idea, you need to show density and that is very hard to demonstrate on a map.

I said more accurate, not completely accurate and my point was that "states" aren't red/blue. There are red enclaves in blue states and blue enclaves in red states. Often times, many enclaves, so the strict geographic divide is murkier than just looking at a map that shows red/blue states. Anyway, I'm pretty sure one map showed density via darker colors, and the map on the link of my original post definitely showed population density. Also, regarding the "no data"...this is based on voter returns from the 2016 election.

Here's this one that may be easier to see population density:

This link has some 3D maps with population:

Also, there's been a great deal of outrage with our primary season, especially on the Dem side.

I know it won't be easy to get rid of the EC but I'm still in favor it. I hope all it takes is for TX to turn blue but I fear it may take a Republican candidate winning the Popular Vote and losing the EC for it to gain any traction, and we know some Dems will change their tune if that were to happen because politics is dirty.

Well, he's batshit. He tweeted today that all the troops in Afghanistan were coming home before the election. Except, apparently he didn't bother to tell the Pentagon. It's whatever thought crosses his mind at the moment. He's completely manic.

I don't know what her plan is and I think we have to wait and see what actually happens.

"batshit". I love it. 😁

Has California done anything different in forest management or climate change after all the previous declarations? No. It doesn’t do anything different. It makes no changes it doesn’t do anything to mitigate. Nothing.

Since you are so critical about the state of California regarding their disasterous fires, maybe you could whip up some magic & send them some flucking RAIN.

I can't believe this thread has lived for 4 years. I would say a big danger from this presidency is that many countries from all over the world start looking down US, especially after the issues have happened this year.

The US went from Bush to Obama and everyone loved Obama so much they didn’t even care he put “kids in cages.” Not even any American liberal did either. They loved it as him being tough on immigration. So the world changes and does the United States changes. Bush to Obama Obama to Trump trump to Biden January 20. The great outpouring of love probably means Biden wins Nobel peace prize just like Obama did

Interestingly people here do not love Obama or the current one. To us, the US is always to be feared. But now, well...

Funny how Trump can't keep his foot out of his mouth. He told the crowd, as he's done numerous times, that if he loses he might have to leave the country. In other words he knows he's going to face NY state in court and prison time and will need to flee the country to avoid prison. But that leaves the problem. If Trump loses I could have seen him resigning and propping Pence up for president for three months provided Pence give him a total pardon. But that would be political suicide for Pence, and the end of his career. I also think Trump has now alerted authorities of his intentions and that his passport needs to be seized on 1/20. This is such a mess.

Or maybe he will just pardon himself and all of his kids.
But Biden will have to order Vance and James of NY not to try to arrest Trump family on NY state charges. Even if trump is arrested and put on trial in NY state it’s national News 24/7 and all because of Biden. So he could pardon himself federally but not On state Charges

Just out of curiosity, what is he pardoning himself and his children for? Which crime? Wouldn't a pardon mean an exoneration from a charge? How does it work when there is no charge? Is there a blanket pardon policy? "I pardon me and my kin for any and all charges, those real and imagined, from here until eternity?"

I know I sound ridiculous, but then again, anyone who would dream this up and think it would stick is just nuts.

Continuing down the same black hole, if this was an actual option, wouldn't the next president have the power of executive privilege and the ability to undo it?

Let me not think any of this nonsense into the universe

Good point. He will lose the election. So no charges would be laid until he is out of office. Yes Biden could pardon him but that is not going to happen. I have no clue though what he’d be charged with except yes I have no doubt he has committed crimes. I normally like to only deal with facts but this man is a sick monster and the fact he refuses to show tax returns .. that’s only one part of it.

i sat up and watched the members of the Lincoln Project zoom video last night and I thought I’d last 20 minutes but I stayed up and watched the whole thing. They said he has lost and that he really couldn’t do another four years financially and with his health. They also said he doesn’t even want what being the president is supposed to do. Just the adulteration and the fringe benefits. I encourage people to listen to it .. they are republicans. I found it extremely interesting.

@FiveRinger Re: your questions about presidential pardons, iirc in previous discussions of this we have found that, yes, there is the possibility of a "blanket pardon" for any and all FEDERAL crimes, including those that have not been indicted, charged, or even investigated. For state crimes, pardon ability rests with the governor or other state entity. The ability of a president to pardon him/herself is still in question.

ETA: I don't believe that any pardon could be revoked by EO or any other means.

Ford pardoned Nixon for “any possible crimes” you don’t have to be charged with anything. It’s possible trump like Nixon will be charged with tax evasion, lying on tax documents, the NYT has proven he lied multiple times on tax documents. The charges are in the NYT and WAPO stories. There is tax evasion, tax fraud, self dealing and more financial crimes. But there is also rape and human trafficking potentially but probably not. Vance intends to put the trumps in prison for financial crimes. And that’s not going to be a big story every day? Even if all the republicans in DC cheer Trump being in prison -which they will - Biden wants to deal with the Trump trial every day?
