It was heartbreaking to watch the Repatriation Ceremony at CFB Trenton yesterday -
everyone, including the Governor-General and Prime Minister, all military and family members, was required to wear a mask and social distancing was in effect (with the exception of the individual family "units").
Family members were flown in by the military but only one family had a flag-draped casket to grieve over. For each of the other five, only their service cap on a special cushion was slowly carried off the plane, formally saluted, then slowly walked to a waiting hearse to receive flowers and salutes from family members and military support personnel.
As is traditional, a procession of the six hearses plus vehicles for the families then drove from Trenton to Toronto, along the "Highway of Heroes" (Highway 401) with a police escort. This route was so dubbed with the repatriation of our deaths in Afganistan. Normally there would be crowds on all the highway overpasses to salute them but that was discouraged this time due to social distancing.
By the way, it was announced that some additional remains (apparently from one casualty) had been recovered but not yet identified. Sadly, it was also announced that the crash happened close enough to the HMCS Fredericton that a number of those on board actually witnessed the crash of the helicopter into the Ionian Sea as it returned to the ship. There was no "Mayday" call.
