My granddaughter spent the day with me. I thought I had enough games to keep us busy but I ran out, even playing several rounds. I'm thinking I need to increase my game collection. I have grandchildren from 16 - 5. The granddaughter I had today just turned 9.

We played: UNO; Yahtzee; 3 Up 3 Down; Suspend; War, and shuffle board.

I didn't get out Farkle, because I thought it might be too complicated.

What are your favorite games and what ages? What games have you played with kids or friends.

my friends like to go to this board game cafe. I go so I can tell my therapist I went but im an only child and I hate games. but the one I enjoy is mall madness. my second favorite is mystery madness.

Qwirkle, Sequence, Labyrinth, exploding kittens (don’t get the nsfw version, lol). Monopoly deal is fun too. It’s a card game that plays quickly, not like regular monopoly.

Yeah, I suggested the hummingbird puzzle. It was a big NO! And I didn't want to do it myself.

I think there is a dominos type game, is it Spinners?

I like Monopoly Deal and Exploding Kittens, too. Other simple ones you could try are Racko and Bananagrams. Guess Who is a classic and always seemed to be the one my nieces and nephew wanted to play. Operation and Jenga both set my nerves on edge (especially Jenga - it gives me literal anxiety) but maybe you’ll do better with it than I do . Hungry Hippos is fun at any age, I think. I have great memories of playing Parcheesi and Trouble all night long with my grandmother.

I bought someone a tiny version once, technically you could do all the things with it if you were a ninja. I couldnt even keep hold of the tongs.

Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza. My kids and their friends love that game. It’s every age appropriate.

I highly recommend Uno Flip. There are numbers on both sides, one being a flip card, so the players can be in one game, then someone gets the flip card and everyone needs to flip over and play those numbered cards. It's a ton of fun because it keeps changing the circumstances of the game.

Five Crowns. Its a bit like rummy. So much fun. I would say ages 8 and up. But adults love it too.

Oh, I think I had an UNO Flip - don't know what happened to the it in the move.

DH is going to cut up the shuffle board (full size) as it was "gifted" to us by previous owners. But son and granddaughter had great fun with it. I hope he doesnt

Depends on the kids! I see competitive options - but there's been a great growth in collaborative games (where as a team you play against the game to see if you can win), which may be good for those who don't like competing with each other.

With 1, Codenames duet is collaborative can be made easier by making it untimed or increasing the number of turns to win. It also would be fun to see how the kids make word associations.
With anywhere from 1 to 4, the Crew is also collaborative but definitely more logical. Same with The Game (rec 3) or Hanabi.
For theme kinds of games, Pandemic and Castle Panic come to mind.

As a competitive game, I also quite like Code names for large groups. I also like blokus for littler kids as the premise is pretty simple and the colors make it look more fun.
- some friends swear that playing magic the gathering is great with kids but I am always iffy about introducing something that can continually get more expensive. But for some other kids with big imaginations, perhaps dungeons and dragons? (Does probably require you to work as a dungeon master though)

In my family, we love the card game Skyjo - can be played from 8+. It's quite popular in France and around Christmas it was sold out on Amazon UK too!

For the older ones (10+) carcassonne, good for 2-4 players. My 6 year old loves battleship and guess who.

When adults wanted to keep us relatively quiet for a while, it was Monopoly or Life. And when we got older, Risk.

My kids are 11 and 15. They both love UNO, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Slamwich, and Left Center Right (can play for candy or dollars) as far as card or dice games.

They both like Clue & Monopoly. The 11yo also still likes playing Sequence and Candy Land.

Fun fact: candyland was created as a game kids in iron lungs (during polio epidemic) could have something to interact with others.

The iron lungs had a mirror attachment. The game could be on a bedside stand, easy to interact with teachers or others.

Only just seen this thread. Have friends who we get together and play. Just a couple of recommendations.

UNO No Mercy - very deadly version of UNO.
Bananagrams - word game with tiles.

We enjoyed playing Spite and Malice, a card game, and also when we had more players, what we called "Scramble Demon," but is called "Racing Demons," more commonly, I think.

My advice is to just have a regular deck of cards on hand--it's cheap, portable, good for two to a whole lot more players and a variety of ages, plus there are seemingly endless variations for play. I always try to pack a deck of cards when we travel; you never know when you are going to get stuck at the airport or have a rainy day to kill. Knowing a lot of games is useful.

I also recommend that you check with your local library to try before you buy. Many libraries (not all) now have all kinds of things in stock, including games and jigsaw puzzles, that you can check out.

I thought it may no longer be played as no-one I knew, beyond my family, had heard of it. (My grandmother, who immigrated from Manchester to South Africa, taught it to us grandkids about 50 years ago, when we were children.) I was surprised that a Google search retrieved results.

I have a book of card games for two people that I picked up somewhere; we learned from that.

There are some Spite and Malice apps out there. I used to play against one, but it never changed strategy, so it was easy to defeat. I might try another one. It's been a while since I've played and I've kind of forgotten the strategies.

S&M is supposedly an easier version of piquet, a very old card game that is supposed to be a lot of fun. I tried to learn piquet at one point, but I have never come across anyone who played and my husband is generally not a fan of games.
