2026 Grand Prix Assignments

Lajoie/Baker are the next on the Alternates List but they've already publicly stated they turned down a SCI host spot because they didn't believe they'd be ready by then, so I imagine that they would pass on GPdF. They might accept Finlandia and do back-to-back GPs, so we'll have to wait and see; but Harris/Chan will most certainly be assigned to GPdF.
Hmmmm so they don´t want the host spot... all right. I get that they don´t think they be ready, but even if they preferred to have more time to be more prepared for the first competition, wouldn´t the path to GP final be easier of they went to SCI instead of Finlandia? At SCI they could get help from home boosting and I think they would have a chance to take the silver and beat Fear/Gi bson there. Who knows, they are very good skaters they might even have placed above L/B if they turn out to just click perfect, but it´s hard to say how they will be so early in their partnership. At Finlandia they are for sure behind FB/C. They could possible take the silver if they are as good as expected, but also T/V might get the home boosting and they could fall behind them. So a possible one placement difference or more between Finlandia and SCI, and how much are those 3 weeks of practice going to make up for it. Also if they did SCI they will have more time to recover before NHK and possible do better there. And there is less travel for SCI.

I don't know why you're thinking that a brand new team, with one partner who has been out of competition for 3+ years, are going to be in the mix for the GPF. They're not on the same level as FBCiz were last season - not least of which they only teamed up in June 2026 vs. FBCiz partnering in Jan 2025 - those five months make a huge difference in preparedness to be competitive on the GP circuit.

Hmmm you might have a point, probably the way FBC came in swooped the podium has given us an unrealistic view on how well and fast new teams can go to the top. I think i´m getting overexcited about them because they might be the only team that can possible beat FBC in the future, but i´m probably getting way ahead on how fast they can make it. I thought both teams teamed up in the spring around the same time, but if there is a 5 month difference that is a lot in time for preparation.

In that case, they might not even consider GP final at all and might even turn down the Finlandia spot as well if they just want to be as prepared as possible for NHK and do it as only GP. Because they need to consider as well if they are able to do back to back so early in their partnership, and might not want to risk it.

I love them both as individual skaters and am sure I will love them together as a team, but I think you are setting very unrealistic expectations on them in the immediate term. jlb had not been in competition shape for a while at the point they teamed up. I just hope he stays healthy and happy and they are able to compete for as long as they want together (same for her really re: staying healthy as she's had a lot of concussions).

And even though they partnered in June, JLB had a number of summer commitments to skating workshops - they didn’t really start training in earnest until July or so.

With Gummenik 2nd on the Alternates list with his Kinoshita Group Cup score (6th), two possibilities are that the Committee/GP Management Group/ISU Grand Prix Coordination Group put him on, even though this is not in the Announcement or in the initial Selection document if there are 10+ skaters/teams on the AL, or they decided that if a skater was on the Top 75 list from last season without being able to meet the minimum through a qualifying event, but did through a 2026-27 Challenger Series event, they use the CS score, not last season's score, which was in the initial Selection document; the latter could be the reason for the ISU's decision. I don't see another option that is vaguely in either document.

The ISU is such crap at documentation and following what they publish, but we know that.

It's crazy how much detective work needs to be done to try to understand how these Alternate lists are constructed! Maybe instead of re-working the whole competition schedule, they should think about increasing the transparency and understandability of things like this if they want to win more fans. Otherwise, it makes it seem like back room deals / favoritism / politics, which I don't think most casual fans are excited to learn about in great depth.

I wonder if the Feds / coaches / skaters have more clarity or if they are just as in the dark about how these Alternate lists work.

Just to add on the Lajoie/Baker thing, even as of High Performance Camp, they noted that their programs were "still in the creation process" and "almost done," so they're quite a bit behind most teams. I wouldn't place too high expectations on their fall results at this point.

This is a wild level of expectation for a team that has yet to compete together even once.

I don’t think any of Hawayek, Baker, Lajoie, and Lagha were so held back by their partner while they had so much potential as Fournier Beaudry or have re-paired with the reigning OGM, so it would be hard to make the comparison anyway.

The top two on the Dance Alternates List have one each: Lajoie/Baker (NHK) and Val Kazimov (GPdF). The ISU could be micro-managy and say that the two openings from Reed/Ambrulevicius, GPdF and Finlandia were at the same time, and even if L/B were willing to do back-to-back GP's on different continents, the two they don't train on, they're not going to screw over Val/Kazimov, who are boxed in. Otherwise, they could give L/B the choice, and if L/B chose Finlandia, the they'd go to Bekker/Hernandez.

L/B might be able to decline -- rather than be offered GPdF and then withdraw later, since they really would't be giving up an opportunity they want -- and then it would be moot, because Val/Kazimov would get Finlandia, and Bekker/Hernandez would get GPdF, unless they stall the substitutions until after Lombardia -- unlikely -- where the only change I could see is if Tali/Lafornara score 4 points higher and skip over B/H.

The top SIX on the Alternates List are as follows:

Lajoie/Baker (NHK)
Harris/Chan (SkAm)
Val/Kazimov (GPdF)
Bekker/Hernandez (SkAm)
Reitan/Majorov (Finlandia)
Tali/Lafornara

Reed/Ambrulevicius' assignments were GPdF and Finlandia. Harris/Chan WILL be assigned to one of those two GPs. It is not outside the realm of possibility that the GP Coordination Group asks Bakerie which of the two they prefer and they may very well say "We'll take Finlandia" even knowing that means back-to-back GPs on two different continents. If not, and they're offered GPdF & decline then they'll lose their place on the Alternates List and HarChan will get GPdF while ValKaz get Finlandia.

I don't see any world where BekHern are offered or receive one of these two GPs, same for TaliLa unless they can actually bump themselves ahead of ValKaz on the Alts List (they'd need 6 points at Lombardia to do that).

MOSCOW, September 9 - RIA Novosti, Svetlana Bonopartova. Russian figure skater Vladislav Dikidzhi has received an invitation to participate in the International Grand Prix Series in China, Alexander Kogan, Secretary General of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), told RIA Novosti.

From the Korean news thread yesterday:
I am qualifying this as news because Junwhan Cha was announced as a presenter for the Korean Grand Music Awards.

The award show dates clash with his scheduled GP assignment at Cup of China.

The site updated, Reshtenko got Skate Canada, Dikidzhi China
Still one TBD in Canada and one in Finland

Just to be clear - the CFSA gave up their remaining CoC TBD host spot, which is why Dikidzhi was invited to CoC. Cha has not withdrawn from either of his GPs yet.

I didn’t know that China had given up their men’s host spot (boo to them for doing that) when I posted. :)

Who are the other MAY STILL WITHDRAW GP skaters/teams besides Cha do we think?

Who are the other MAY STILL WITHDRAW GP skaters/teams besides Cha do we think?
Mariia Seniuk (Skate America) - rumoured to have moved on to coaching after the Olympics

Nagaoka/Moriguichi (Cup of China, NHK) - Yuna Nagaoka leg injury in a road accident in early August, don't know if they've said anything about her expected recovery.

Janse van Rensburg/Steffan (Grand Prix de France, Skate America) - Announced they were back in training in early summer but coach has retired and no show at DEU test skates so I've got them back at status uncertain.
Bekker/Hernandez (Skate America) - Last evidence of them on the ice together was in early May; might be injury related.

Reshtenko must have been invited to Skate Canada before Dikidzhi was added, since he was not even listed on the AL. He would have been slotted between Dikidzhi and Gummenik, since they’re using Gummenik’s Kinoshita score, not his OWG score. It would have been a tough back-to-back between Kelowna and Shenzen for Dikidzhi, since he’ll remain at the top until he gets a second, unless his score is topped in whatever ways they’re adding/moving scores around.

ETA: Amber Glenn has not been removed from SA or NHK, and if she goes deep in Dancing with the Stars, I don’t see her competing.

Potential WD and replacements (based on above)

Seniuk (SA), Amber (NHK- already has 3 JPN entries)- Miyake (CAN), Matsuike (already at SA), Sauter (already @ NHK), SJVF (CoC). SJVF would be first NHK alternate, Miyake would be 1st SA alternate.

Cha (CHN, NHK) -Dikidzhi (already in CHN), Gumennik (no GP yet), Nordeback (FIN)

Nagaoka/Moriguchi (COC/NHK)- Boikova, Chikmareva, Mukhortova (no GPs yet)

Bekker/Hernandez (SA), JVR/Steffan (FRA, SA)- Lajoie (NHK), Harris (SA already), Val (FRA)

Another potential GP withdrawal are Pavlova/Sviatchenko who withdrew from Nebelhorn yesterday. Their GPs are GPdF and Finlandia. Potential replacements - BoiKoz for GPdF, but probably not Finlandia due to visa/travel restrictions for Russians by the Finnish government; WilLew for Finlandia currently, though I suspect there will be at least a couple teams who are added to the Pairs Alternates List higher than them after John Nicks IPC.

Janse van Rensburg/Steffan (Grand Prix de France, Skate America) - Announced they were back in training in early summer but coach has retired and no show at DEU test skates so I've got them back at status uncertain.
From August 18th in German news thread:
Jennifer Janse van Rensburg/Benjamin Steffan are taking a break and therefore did not participate.
This is what Pirouette Magazine reported at the time for why they didn't appear at the test skates, no news since then but maybe that was soft launching it.
