2026 Grand Prix Assignments

I was asked to repost this comment here by Sylvia regarding the 4 open GP slots

If I have this right

Alysa's Skate America slot was a host pick, goes back to USFS for another host pick?

Finlandia slot (and the 2 other open slots at NHK and Skate America created by Lorine Schild) goes to alternates list which is in this order I think:
1] Yuseong Kim (by virtue of winning CS cranberry?) -- she either gets lorine schild's skate america slot or alysa's finlandia slot
2] Adeliia Petrosian (best in SB order) -- she either gets lorine schild's skate america slot or alysa's finlandia slot or lorine schild's NHK trophy slot; but we have no idea if she's competing
3] Young You -- if adeliia passes, she would be in line for a slot that yuseong kim does not take
4] Saki Miyake -- if she is not picked for NHK host, she is only eligible for a skate america slot due to country quota at finlandia
5] Olivia Lisko -- skate america or NHK if it falls down
6] Rino Matsuike -- will guarantee pass over (assigned skate america, country quota at finlandia, NHK is host pick not the open Schild slot)
7] Julia Sauter -- schild skate america slot or alysa finlandia slot or schild NHK slot
8] Sophie Joline von Felten -- skate america or finlandia or NHK [and realistically she is now in line for a host pick at skate america]
9] Seoyoung Kim -- only skate america [already assigned finlandia, country quota at NHK]
10] Mariia Seniuk -- Finlandia or NHK

The SkAm spot is a USA host spot, so it isn't going to be filled by someone on the GP Alternates List.

1 & 2 - Yuseong Kim is NOT above Adeliia Petrosian on the GP Alternates List which goes by SB score. Yuseong DID leapfrog Young You but not because she won Cranberry Cup - she leapfrogged You because she improved her SB score.

First right of refusal for Schild's two spots would go to Petrosian. If she is not competing this season, which appears to be the case, then Yuseong Kim would be invited to SkAm.

3 - You is next in line for the Finlandia spot, presuming that Ys Kim gets the SkAm spot. It's safe to say, there will be 3 Korean women at both SkAm & Finlandia by the time the 3 empty spots are filled.

4 & 6 - Miyake is only eligible for the NHK TBD spot, same with Matsuike.

5 - Lisko should get the NHK spot vacated by Schild.

7, 9 & 10 - Sauter will move up the GP Alternates list but she won't get one of the 3 currently empty spots; same for Seoyoung Kim & Seniuk.

8 - von Felten is the most likely option for one of the SkAm TBD spots - there will now be 2 since Alysa was a host pick - and potentially a third if the rumors about Amber doing DWTS are to be believed.

Top 10 Women Alternates outside of JPN, KOR, and Petrosian...several of the GP events have 3 or will soon have 3 JPN and KOR skaters, so this may end up mattering more than the other disciplines...

Olivia Lisko - 1 event
Julia Sauter -1 event
Sophie Joline Von Felten - 1 event
Mariia Seniuk - 1 event
Sara Maude Dupuis - 1 event
Olga Mikutina- 1 event
Alina Bonillo- 1 event
Gabrielle Daleman- 1 event
Viktoriia Safonova
Sarina Joos- 1 event

Current situation with Women JPN and KOR assignments
FRA- 3 JPN, 2 KOR
CAN- 2 JPN, 2 KOR
CHN- 3 JPN, 2 KOR
USA- 2 JPN, 2 KOR
FIN- 3 JPN, 2 KOR
NHK- 3 JPN (once TBA filled), 3 KOR

JPN alternates in order- Miyake, Matsuike, Mako (assuming Haruna is doing a country switch)
KOR alternates in order- Yuseong, Young, Seoyoung, Ahsun

Young You was assigned Skate America in the former Schild slot, not Yuseong Kim: Source

There is some new confusion about the alternate list due to this paragraph

2.3 Minimum Score for Grand Prix events (Grand Prix Minimum Technical Score)
Each entrant to the six events of the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Series must meet a minimum total scorefrom ISU Events (GP, JGP, Championships, and ISU Challenger Series Events) of the previous season. These scores will be published annually and decided in consultation with the ISU Technical Committee in eachdiscipline and approved by the ISU Grand Prix Management Group.
The minimum total score from ISU Events for this season is 3/5 of highest score per discipline at the ISU Figure Skating World Championships 2026:Men 197.64 Women 142.97 Pair Skating 137.00 Ice Dance 138,49
Skaters/Couples who have scored at least the above-mentioned limit in an ISU Championships, ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix, or ISU Challenger Series Competition between July 1st, 2025 and June 11, 2026 are eligible for selection into the Grand Prix events 2026/27 or in the alternate list. Skaters/Couples, placed in the top 75 Season’s Best are placed on the alternate list.
However, those who need to score the minimum Grand Prix score as listed above can do so in the ISU Challenger Series 2026/27.
Note: Whether AINs from the ISU Members Belarus and Russia are placed on the Alternate List depends on their eligibility under ISU Communication 2804 and their fulfilment of the general requirements (e.g. achieving the minimum score listed above in the ISU Challenger Series 2026/27)

Hmmmm... So, Adeliia Petrosian must have declined since she SHOULD have been the first person on the Alts List.

Best guess why Young was invited over Yuseong to SkAm - the GP Coordination Group & KSU realize that both are going to get a 2nd GP now that Alysa is no longer competing. Inviting Young to SkAm gives her a week break between her 1st & 2nd GPs (her initial assignment was to just NHK). Yuseong will almost certainly get the Finlandia spot opened up by Alysa. Then it becomes a question of how long the GP Coordination Group & JSF take to fill Lorine's vacated spot at NHK.

The General Announcement doc had been published at the same time the initial selections were published but I noticed it disappeared from the GP landing page several weeks ago. I'm glad it's been added back. Noticeably, the Alternates List from last season has finally been removed from the Related Docs tab.

The General Announcement doc has changed from what was originally published. There is now a deadline of August 30, 2026 for confirmation of all seeded & invited skaters so we may be seeing a big update to the entries lists next week.

They reverted back to Top 7-12 Pairs or Dance Couples from the last 3 World Championships in the "Return of a Split Couple" and "Return of a Ranked Couple" sections. Which is kind of bullcrap since they changed it a couple months ago to Top 7-10, which deliberately excluded the new US teams of Andrews/Parkman, McBeath/Nagy and Shin/Howe from the initial selections. It also means those three new teams should, theoretically, jump to the top of the Alternates List going off the SB scores last season from their previous partnerships (Shin/Howe would be above Andrews/Parkman and McBeath/Nagy).

They also took out the whole Alternates List section and reverted back to, essentially, the old verbiage.

So, Adeliia Petrosian must have declined since she SHOULD have been the first person on the Alts List.
It's either that or the minimum score paragraph is doing some lifting to exclude AINs from alternates list until they do challenger this year?

If they are being literal, the Olympics or the Olympics qualifying event is not one of their categories [ISU Championship, GP events, or challenger] they are pulling scores from to satisfy minimums for entry into GP series or alternates list

The Alternates List is pulled directly from the 2025-26 Season's Best List which includes the Olympics and the Olympic Qualifying Event.

I noticed that additional verbiage in the Minimum Score for the GP section about the AINs.

Note: Whether AINs from the ISU Members Belarus and Russia are placed on the Alternate List depends on their eligibility under ISU Communication 2804 and their fulfilment of the general requirements (e.g. achieving the minimum score listed above in the ISU Challenger Series 2026/27)

Petrosian has achieved the Minimum Score since she's on the SB List already. I don't think it has anything to do with whether or not she's competed in a Challenger or if her AIN status is not yet fully reconfirmed. I think it's really a matter of she's too injured to believe she will be ready to compete this fall. And with the reversion back to the old verbiage for the Alternates List, any Russian men, women or ice dancers who win a Challenger will be added to the Alternates List at the BOTTOM rather than wherever their score places them within thee rest of the field, so the likelihood of anyone aside from Gumennik or Petrosian receiving a GP invitation is non-existent. Pairs is a different beast altogether, especially with the decimated Alternates List.

Okay, so there is a lot of chatter going around X today about the revised GP Alternates verbiage and what it means for, specifically, Petrosian & Gumennik (and Safonova, who is too far down the Women's List to get an assignment anyways).

They are on the 2025-26 SB list by virtue of their OWG and OWG Qualifying Event scores. However, the Minimum Score for the GP requires the score to have been achieved at a Challenger, GP, JGP or ISU Championship competition. So, once Petrosian, Gumennik & Safonova compete at a Challenger and achieve the GP Minimum Score, then their place on the GP Alternates List will be confirmed. Until then, they cannot be selected for any GPs should a spot open up.

That could explain the delay in filling the spot vacated by Vasiljevs at CoC, since Gumennik is entered at CS Kinoshita Group Cup & will, most assuredly, achieve the GP Minimum Score there. The fact that they went ahead and offered You the SkAm spot vacated by Schild would seem to indicate that they're not holding any spots open for Petrosian because 1) she hasn't been entered in any Challengers yet, and 2) she won't be sufficiently recovered from her injuries by the GPs and the RFSF has communicated this to the GP Coordination Group.

The new verbiage is vague regarding Pairs teams being added, so we'll have to wait until the first Alternates List is published to get a better idea of what the plan is for who gets added and how they are prioritized on the Alternates List.

ETA - it's also clear the GP Coordination Group has moved to restrict AINs in singles & dance from being issued GP invitations by virtue of winning the early fall Challengers.

I've seen a lot of people wondering if Petrosian is sitting the season out entirely. I know she only just announced her new coach earlier this week after leaving Eteri.

The success of Russian juniors at JGP where they took all four golds forced ISU to egerntly have online meeting and come up with something, proving once again that they are not a sport organisation.
Cheers to Japanese for being the one, providing maximum slots for Russians with no visa issues.

Listen, troll, the GP General Announcement was removed from the GP landing page several weeks ago, around the beginning of August. Whatever reasons the GP Coordinaton Group had to revert back to the verbiage used during the past 2 seasons, the changes were in the works well before the Russian AINs swept in China against mostly weak fields because no other feds save New Zealand with Yanhao Li sent their top skaters/teams.

The only discipline where Russian AINs are likely to well & truly dominate once we get to the JGPF is in pairs.

But, with respect to the GP, even with the originally announced new Alt List process, it would have been difficult for AINs to jump to the top of the Alts List in every discipline except pairs.

I will say that I do think there was an intent to exclude AINs with the choice to revert back to the old process. There is no way the ISU wants to deal with having an AIN team at World Team Trophy. Effectively blocking most of their skaters/teams from the GP most assuredly prevents Russian AINs from earning the points necessary to qualify for WTT. And I can't say I blame the ISU for not wanting the PR hassle of an AIN team at WTT.

Nothing against You Young, but I was hoping a bunch of alternate assignments would be made together, and that we'd get both twins at Skate America.

You are saying the same thing as I do- ISU is not a sport organisation, the one who gives equal opportunities to all athletes. ISU is a corrupt political scam who by rules' manipulation plays favourites/unfavourites. The difference between us is I call it wrong, you call it right.
Btw, it's Japanese who are paying for WTT. Considering what welcome they provided for Russians in Kinoshita, they are hardly happy with new ISU scam. In the country of sumo, where sport is mixed with religion, an athlete will never be a star if the scam is involved. Kaori is respected because everyone knows it wasn't her fault. But in spite of having 4 world titles, more than Mao or Hanyu, she never had a chance to become one more star. Because all her titles were won when the main rivals couldn't compete.

It's stupid to say that Russians would never win GP except in pairs. Who could predict that Shaidorov would be an OC. Anything can happen on slippery ice. It's idiotic to keep calling AIN2 as such unless you are an ISU old farts. They are Russians.

Samoilov got a spot in China. "Better" for sport to have 21 place than 6 to compete.

Listen, again, troll... Gumennik is only 11th on the 2025-26 Season's Best list, not 6th.

Blah blah blah to the rest of your idiotic ranting.

Listen, again, troll... Gumennik is only 11th on the 2025-26 Season's Best list, not 6th.
And Samoilov is only 29. The 21 and 6 were their Olympic numbers, which you didn't get. Now tell me why it's better for the sport 29 to compete instead of 11.

Have read online that AIN skaters have to enter a Challenger event to be put on the GP alternates list. Is this true?

Yes. The GP Total Minimum Score must be earned at a Challenger, GP, JGP or ISU Championship; so while Gumennik, Petrosian and Safonova are on the Season's Best list that generates the GP Alternates List, they aren't eligible for GP selection until they compete at a Challenger & earn the GP Total Minimum Score.
