2026-27 US Pairs Discussion - Howe Nagy to Twist Your Way to Starrdom

I think some of us are reacting to "writing off" a pair before they've even competed. FWIW, my first thought when I heard that Starr had teamed up with Daniil P. was "what an ideal first partner from whom to learn pairs!" I'm interested to see how they compete together this season and don't really have any expectations re. scores/results, etc.

Well, if you look at M/P scores history on Skatingscores, it was a pretty flat line for their 3 seasons together. They scored 181 twice in their first season together, and two years later they were averaging basically exactly the same score.

Also, unless there is some info I am not privy to, Daniil was not captured against his will to skate with Starr. So I am not sure why their partnership should make you angry.

And I am far from Starr's biggest fan, but her natural charisma and star power is in a different league from several pairs women. If nothing else, this is an interesting experiment.

Yet to compete- Efimova/Mitrofanov, Andrews/Parkman

@Sylvia, your observation may be correct, but it makes me angry. McBeath and Parkman were doing well. Now Parkman is paired with Andrews, and for what? To teach her pairs?
It's hard to say who initiated the split. Last spring there were a LOT of rumors flying around regarding at least five of the US pairs teams - Shin/Nagy, Chan/Howe, Flores/Wang, Kam/O'Shea, and then McBeath/Parkman came into that picture rather late & unexpectedly.

Starr was known to be having tryouts with multiple pair guys; Dave Lease was posting rumors about Balazs trying out with multiple US pairs girls. The rumor mill was OFF the charts at the time and even included Ashley Cain coming back to competition with Siianytsia.

Based on some stuff I've heard privately, I think that Parkman was actually the one left partnerless even though his partnership with Starr was announced first. We didn't get confirmation of McBeath/Nagy until they were added to the USFS' ISP on June 2, nearly a month after Andrews/Parkman was announced on May 7. However, during that month, DL also reported that Deanna Stellato-Dudek had reached out to multiple US men (Danny O'Shea, Balazs Nagy, etc) for tryouts. My suspicion/belief has always been that the McBeath/Nagy partnership announcement was delayed when he decided to entertain the idea of trying out with Deanna. Ultimately, for whatever reasons, that didn't materialize/pan out, so he stuck with McBeath.

Regardless, I don't think that Parkman or McBeath were in the wrong for making a choice to split & find new partners. They sort of plateaued this past season and never scored as well again as they did at the 2025 John Nicks PIC, with Worlds 2026 being one of the worst competitions for them. If you go back and read the comments in last season's US Pairs discussion thread, there were & remain a lot of positive comments about the Andrews/Parkman partnership. He's young (only 27) and could easily go another 2 Olympic cycles. Yes, she's new to pairs & learning but, honestly, the US doesn't have a lot of really great or talented pairs girls/women at the moment.

We've had several good to outstanding pairs guys languishing around looking for a solid partner. Mitrofanov waited 15 months before Efimova became available; Siiantysia has been looking for a decent partner for 3+ years; Nagy has bounced from partner to partner for years now, searching for a solid one who doesn't need to learn everything from the ground up; O'Shea partnered with Ellie, who is 13 years younger, after helping her work on her pairs skills when her previous partner was injured; etc. I'm not sure who else there was for Parkman to partner with, especially if McBeath had already made up her mind to skate with Nagy when he came knocking at her door last spring.

As it is, they have a very good coaching team who will do what is right for them and who understand that some elements - like the twist, death spiral and throws - take time to be properly developed for elite, senior level competitors. I have far more confidence in the TeamTodd&Jenni crew to take Andrews/Parkman to an internationally competitive level over time than any other coaching team we have in the US save the Letovs (the Cains would also be in that mix but they seem to have stepped back from pairs coaching the past few years). I don't see TeamTodd&Jenni rushing them to compete before they're ready, which is a good thing. There's no sense in putting unreasonable expectations on them, especially her, right now while she's still learning the basics of the discipline. They don't HAVE to be great right now - we're in a semi-decent place given the musical chairs our US pairs teams played during the spring what with EfiMit regularly scoring in the 190s & sometimes hitting the 200s; & both SHowe & McNagy scoring 180+ in their competitive debuts, and that's not even taking into consideration that KamO may decide to compete during the second half of the season (not likely, I don't think, but who knows). Let's see what Andrews/Parkman look like come January and then maybe we can start drawing some conclusions about their longterm potential.

I wasn't reading here in the spring (and am feeling too lazy to check myself) so can someone tell me if Starr actually went through with her "partner search quest" idea via her social media account(s)?
a little ot but: did he [Luke] and starr break up?
I was wondering the same thing.
I had anticipated her [Starr] skating with Luke Wang, which would have been more interesting.
Based only on scanning their respective Instagram accounts, it appears they broke up sometime in late spring?

Deanna and Danill are brand new together also, and even though their program at the Sizzler was empty, I am ready for this couple to be amazing.
I am, too! :D

Remember, there was already chatter of Starr and Luke potentially skating together as early as Skate America last season. Maybe even before that. But even if they didn't actually plan to skate together, it was 'out there' that she was going into pairs and that he was seemingly going to be finished with Olivia.

As far as Ashley Cain goes, the quiet buzz was not with Siianytsia - maybe she still makes a comeback after all?

The 2026 pairs shuffle is looking pretty good so far. Shin/Howe and McBeath/Nagy both look noticeably stronger and more cohesive with their new partners than they did in their previous pairings. I was impressed by both their debuts.

The one I keep coming back to, though, is Katie's new partnership with Balazs. She just looks different out there — more confident, more determined.

It's got me wondering about the timing of her split from Daniil. As I understand it, his citizenship situation means he likely wouldn't be eligible to compete until after the 2030 Olympics — and with Katie in her early 30s, that's a tough number to sit with if the Olympics is the actual goal. It wouldn't surprise me if that timeline played a role in her decision to split with Daniil.

Katie and Balazs list Rafael Artunian as a coach on their bio. Looks like they’re locking it in to try and get that triple salcow and possibly work on a harder jump combo.

I also thought they looked very comfortable and settled and honestly I think they have a higher ceiling than either of their past partnerships.

Reagan Moss/Jakub Galbavy article for Golden Skate by Tatjana Flade (Sept. 13):
Excerpt from the end:
The duo has established clear benchmarks for the rest of the season.
“We definitely want to improve our jumps, transitions, and skating skills,” Moss said. “We also have a new Group 5 Axel Lasso lift that we want to refine.”
Following their silver medal performance in Riga, the team is in a good position to qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final—a prospect Moss calls “a dream come true.” They are next slated to compete at the JGP in Gdańsk, Poland.
“We will evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and make whatever changes we need to from there,” said Moss.
Participating in the 2027 World Junior Figure Skating Championships is another major target.
“The U.S. has three spots this year, so I hope we go. That would be fun,” Moss said.

Thanks very much, Claire! This was new info to me: "Flores and Sadusky are assigned to compete at CS Nepela Memorial in a few weeks."

Blake Eisenach's post-competition message also referenced Nepela Memorial at the end:
Not the placement we had hoped for but definitely the experience that we needed. Our first competition together and I’m so proud of what we’ve put together in 3 months of skating together. Sarah and I both took time away from competitive skating and have a shared passion of pursuing it for ourselves now. It’s feels great to officially be back on the international stage and share the ice with so many incredible pairs teams! We’re already back to training and preparing for competition in Slovakia next week.
ETA that I just saw that @Karen-W posted last week about the Pairs Senior B at Nepela, here: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...nger-series-events.113865/page-4#post-6951630

Articles on the 3 U.S. pairs competing at the JGP in Ankara tomorrow and Friday:

Sofia JARMOC / Luke WITKOWSKI USA [4th in Xi'an with 132.21] - Sept. 16, 2026:
The pair have a solid friendship beyond the rink, even if their interests don't always overlap. Jarmoc, a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, enjoys surfing, wakeboarding and baking, while Witkowski, a junior at Harvard College, is an avid golfer and basketball fan. On the side, he does promotions for "Naturally Happening," a Boston-based indie rock band.
The skaters' personalities complement each other, too. Witkowski described Jarmoc as an "excellent communicator and highly sympathetic," while Jarmoc said Witkowski brings energy and fun, which can be especially valuable in competition. Jarmoc said his energetic, joyful demeanor helps her calm down at competitions. [Carrie] Wall also sees their contrasting personalities as part of what makes the partnership work.
"I've never worked with an athlete like Luke who brings the joy to every single thing that we do," she said. "And Sofia and I have a more similar, introverted personality. So it's just a joy to work with a pair team that cares for each other."

Kaitlyn OH / Aaron FELBERBAUM [new this season; JGP debut] - Sept. 15:
"In our tryout, he actually dislocated his finger," Oh laughed.
"Yeah, we tried to do a triple twist, and I missed and I caught her with just my pinkie, so that was fun," Felberbaum added. "It was a nice bonding experience."
Despite the mishap, the two found it to be a good omen for the start of their partnership. Oh and Felberbaum decided to continue their training under the Knierims and LeDuc, the same coaching staff that guided their previous partnerships. [...]
"I think this is a good spread of coaches. Each of them have their own coaching personality and I think they all balance each other so well," Felberbaum said of the team he has worked with the past four years.
"I love all the coaches here. They all make really great contributions to the team, and I really like how they train us, like physically, mentally," Oh added.
When it comes to programs this season, it was a team effort between Oh and Felberbaum and their coaches. For their short program, the team is skating "You Don't Own Me" performed by Brenna Whitaker. The program was choreographed by Alexa and Chris Knierim.
"At the beginning of the program, I get to give Aaron a little slap," Oh described. "Alexa enjoyed this music. She was the one that pushed for it the most."

Elizabeth YUN / Mitchell CASTELLETTI USA [JGP debut] - Nov. 2025 article:
What is it that you already like most about skating with your new partner?
Mitchell: I really admire Liza’s work ethic and her commitment. Her sense of humor and great attitude every day makes every lesson enjoyable.
Liza: I really love the energy Mitchell brings to the ice and to our programs. On top of that , he’s incredibly hard-working and always gives his all during practices, which pushes me to do the same. We’re actually quite similar in that we’re
