Rob Brodie's latest interview with Maddie Schizas: One more chapter for Canada's ice queen

“There were numerous motivators. I went back and forth on it, but I was never not doing it,” she said in explaining the rationale behind her choice to return to competition. “I think there are various motivators; I like skating and the process of everything, and I felt like having a year with less pressure than Olympics.

“It gives you the opportunity to take more risks and do things with no regret, so I think that was a big motivator for me. Just the opportunity to maybe try some different things without feeling that any decision you make could be the make or break. There’s a little bit less pressure on every decision.”

I can understand her rationale re the stress of an Olympic year.

Great to see she's upgraded her SP combo to a 3flip-3toe.

She caught my eye when she was about 11/12 I recall her amazing flexibility and power and now she is all grown up and is the full package. What a beautiful dress, I also think she has one of the nicest coaches.

Reese has a lot I potential. Definitely has some musicality and her jumps are big. It will be a interesting to see our young skaters develop.

planned 3F+3T was popped into 3F maybe because of bad landing (which would explain negative GOE)
planned 3Lz doubled
planned 3F doubled with a fall
planned 3T became 1T+2T
funny enough she hit her 3 jump axel sequence, it do be that way sometimes

I think it’s likely that her team is gunning for assignments though and they want her out there as many times as they can over the summer to show she should be getting sent out internationally.

I think she has so many of the qualities to make a great skater and I hope she continues on an upward trajectory because there is a lot of raw talent and a lot to like about her skating.

I think she's probably doing NextGen in a couple weeks, so good for her to get out there before that!

Reese Rose's triple Axel keeps getting better

What a lovely title.

Indeed, her coach, Darlene Joseph, calls the triple Axel “the easiest triple she ever got, I would really say.” And she does them big.

“For me, the (triple) Axel doesn’t feel like a big thing; when I land it, everyone’s clapping and everything, but truly it’s not that it’s not hard, but it doesn’t feel very difficult for me,” Rose said earlier this week. “Double Axels have been my favourite always, since forever (she’s been landing them since she was eight years old).

Has Reese done ballet and jazz? I’ve noticed that kids who do regular dance classes seem to find axels easier.
