Rob Brodie's latest interview with Maddie Schizas: One more chapter for Canada's ice queen

“There were numerous motivators. I went back and forth on it, but I was never not doing it,” she said in explaining the rationale behind her choice to return to competition. “I think there are various motivators; I like skating and the process of everything, and I felt like having a year with less pressure than Olympics.

“It gives you the opportunity to take more risks and do things with no regret, so I think that was a big motivator for me. Just the opportunity to maybe try some different things without feeling that any decision you make could be the make or break. There’s a little bit less pressure on every decision.”

Great to see she's upgraded her SP combo to a 3flip-3toe.

She caught my eye when she was about 11/12 I recall her amazing flexibility and power and now she is all grown up and is the full package. What a beautiful dress, I also think she has one of the nicest coaches.

Reese has a lot I potential. Definitely has some musicality and her jumps are big. It will be a interesting to see our young skaters develop.

What a lovely title.

Indeed, her coach, Darlene Joseph, calls the triple Axel “the easiest triple she ever got, I would really say.” And she does them big.

“For me, the (triple) Axel doesn’t feel like a big thing; when I land it, everyone’s clapping and everything, but truly it’s not that it’s not hard, but it doesn’t feel very difficult for me,” Rose said earlier this week. “Double Axels have been my favourite always, since forever (she’s been landing them since she was eight years old).

Has Reese done ballet and jazz? I’ve noticed that kids who do regular dance classes seem to find axels easier.

Paula Slater interview with our wee future star : NextGen champion Lia Cho ready for junior international debut

While international assignments are on the horizon, Cho’s offseason focus has remained firmly rooted in technical development. Chief among her goals is improving the consistency of her triple Axel, a jump she chose not to attempt at nationals last season.

“I think I was a little bit too nervous, and it wasn’t consistent enough,” she explained. “I decided to keep it clean and maybe attempt it in the future.”

For now, consistency remains the priority.

In addition to the triple Axel, Cho has begun exploring even bigger elements. She revealed that she has started working on both the quadruple Salchow and the quadruple toe loop, though her recent attention has centered on adjusting to new equipment.

The past year has not been without challenges. Cho has grown approximately three inches since last season and dealt with minor injuries affecting her back, knee, and ankle. Those experiences taught her valuable lessons about managing her body and training load.

“I’ve been learning how to understand my body more, take care of my physical condition, take rests, and control my skating amount,” she said.

Finally, the time has arrived for Lia Cho to challenge the world's best junior skaters. Not to mention the cream of the crop in Canadian women's skating

While this season will involve splitting Cho’s time between junior and senior events, Davis said it won’t mean too much in terms of program changes throughout the campaign.
“The long just has the extra step sequence in it,” he said. “So once the junior series finishes, she’ll start doing the long with just the footwork (added). So it’s a little more time (in program length), but the rest of the jumps and things won’t change.”

There are also new things happening in Cho’s world away from the ice. This fall, she will enter Grade 9 at the National Sport School in Calgary, which her mother says will work well in tandem with her skating. The school describes itself as being “designed for families of high-performance developmental and competitive athletes who wish to excel in both academics and athletics.”

But skating is the biggest thing in her life, and there are many more years of that to come in her career. As we’ve discussed in this space previously, her August birthday (Cho turns 14 on Aug. 21) prevents her from being age eligible for the 2030 Winter Olympics in France, but there is still much to accomplish over the next quadrennial.
“The goal is for Lia to push herself technically with triple Axels and quads. She has been working on quad Sal and quad toe, and they’re pretty impressive,” said Davis. “So it’s just a matter of injecting them into programs when they are consistent and strategically looking at competitions, and then making sure that her body stays healthy and (monitoring) the impact of all these jumps because she jumps pretty high. We want to make sure the impact isn’t too great.
“She’s only 13, so it’s a long-term development process; we don’t want to rush it. And then also challenge her with the details of choreography and spins and musicality. At such a young age, she’s really impressive that way as well. But there’s always basic skating and edges and speed and flow that can be worked on as well. But I think it’s looking at each competition each year and seeing where she’s at and where she can go out and feel confident and comfortable and consistent.”

Brookelynn Pollock landed 3T+3T (only 3-3 combo called clean of the 2 attempted in the event), 3Lo & 2A in the SP and 3 clean triples in the FS (3Lo, 3S+2T, 2A+2A, 3T). Joanne McLeod & Neil Wilson were with her.

Amy Shao Ning Yang was the final skater in the SP event and had the highest PCS of the event - deserved, IMO, due to her smooth & elegant skating. Shazam identified her music as Deep into the Forest (from The Piano OST) by Michael Nyman and Wild Side (from the Tree of Life Suite) by Roberto Cacciapaglia. Coaches were Keegan Murphy & Megumu Seki.

Jugnauth's FS - Yesterday (cover) - skated the cleanest/stood up on everything in the FS - I thought she was great!

I really enjoyed her programs from the Next Gen competition. I was pleased to see her as a substitute for the JGP in Thailand. Hopefully she will get a junior international later in the season.

"I had a bit of a hiccup on my first jump, so I didn't feel like it was good enough for me to do the next triple. That's definitely my goal for the next competition. Overall, I'm pretty happy."
