From what I understand, it's Charlene Cameron heading up the program along with John Mattatal involved in some capacity.

ETA: I will be on site & am excited to see the next gen of pairs and dancers in action :) 19 Pre-Novice dance teams as well!

I was just checking the pre novice in time to see Lea Pelletier land a triple lutz in pre novice!! Not sure of her age as she is quite tall and no age restrictions now.

Decent skate from David Howes, 3lutz-2toe, 3flip(q), 2A(step out), he's made some good progress since Championnats québecois d'été. Bonus points from me for using ELO's "Telephone Line" to open the program. :D

Nice to see Annie Barabe with her skaters. Maybe she has been coaching all along but I have missed her.

And good going Manitoba!! I am so glad to see their skaters back on the national stage.

Top 4 after the Pre-Novice Pair SP:

1 Sarah-Jade Cyr / Étienne Lacasse QC 38.91
2 Julia Xiao / Keith Lau MB 34.62 34.62
3 Siyul Back / Gavin Mahoney ON 34.17
4 Mégane-Rose Pelletier / Emerick Rasoanaivo QC 32.72

Protocols: https://cssterminalserv.skatecanada.ca/results/23CHAPNNPre-NovicePairSP1DRO.pdf

This was such a fun event! Big range in ages and abilities, one sibling team, 2 reverse teams, 3 mirror teams, and some very nice performances. 🤩 The top 3 in particular look like they might have potential - Cyr/Lacasse would not be out of place in Novice, itty-bitty Xiao/Lau have a seriously kick-ass 2twist, Back/Mahoney are only doing a 1twist at this point, but have excellent speed. Most importantly, there were a lot of smiles and happy faces in the K&C, particularly among the NS teams, so great to see the kids enjoying themselves. Also good to see that everyone seemed to be staying within the scope of their abilities, no :yikes: twists and only a couple of slightly shaky lifts. And making her debut at the boards, Kirsten Moore-Towers is now coaching at the Connaught Skating Club. :) She has 2 pre-nov teams competing in Regina.

Top 4 after the Novice Pair SP:

1 Alexane Jean / Charly Laliberté-Laurent QC 43.08
2 Beau Callahan / Benjamin Leduc QC 40.70
3 Julia Di Menna / Félix-Antoine Chartrand QC 36.76
4 Annika Behnke / Kole Sauve AB/NT/NU 33.39

Full results: https://cssterminalserv.skatecanada.ca/results/23CHAPNNNovicePairCR.pdf

Protocols: https://cssterminalserv.skatecanada.ca/results/23CHAPNNNovicePairSP1DRO.pdf

Also some nice skating in this event. In particular I enjoyed both Jean/Laliberté-Laurent and Callahan/Leduc. I was a bit surprised by Jean/Laliberté-Laurent's very big 2twist, but then saw Andrew Evans was with them and coach Marc Andre Craig in the K&C.

I got to photograph both the PN Pair short and free and I was also very pleasantly surprised. I agree with your assessment @shutterbug - everyone stayed within their abilities and it was a really fun event! Shout out to all the coaches who are working on good pairs technique! :)

We've been hearing quite a bit about Skate Canada's efforts to promote pair skating "from the ground up" and it sounds like there are some results happening. Good to hear. Thanks for the reports.

The Canadian Pre-Novice combined score record was broken twice at this event, first by Xiao/Lau, then by Cyr/Lacasse about 8 minutes later. Katia Gordeeva's team Saccomanno/Vaudrin finished in 11th overall.

The Canadian Novice combined score record for this event was also broken by Jean/Laliberté-Laurent. 3rd place team Behnke/Sauve were the only team to attempt triple jumps, landing very nice sbs 3sals and a solid throw 3sal.

I am pretty impressed with these rebuilding years at the quality of the lower level skaters. I predicted two years ago about when the PreNovice/Novice turned Junior and it’s happening! Exciting times to come.

Lia is my little skating companion in Red Deer - she and I shared an Olympic sized rink at the college. We had the rink all to ourselves. Of course, she had to move to Calgary last summer and I miss her terribly but I go to watch her compete when the competition is close by. She's in 2nd place right now after the short program at the Canada Winter Games in PEI - go Lia!!!
