Cate Fleming/Jedidiah Isbell most recently finished 5th in Junior at the U.S. Pairs Final (November 2019) with a total score of 119.25 (42.46 in SP, 76.79 in FS). YOG will be their junior international debut.

Katarina Wolfkostin/Jeffrey Chen's most recent international was Golden Spin of Zagreb (December 2019) where they placed 2nd in Junior Dance with a total score of 163.81 (66.52 in RD, 97.29 in FD). Denisa Cimlova/Vilem Hlavsa CZE placed 8th with 126.01.
Alina Butaeva/Luka Berulava GEO won Junior Pairs with 142.54.
Arlet Levandi EST placed 3rd in Junior Men with 129.06.

I avoided citing those minor junior events because I think the scoring at them in things like dance tends to be notably higher than on the JGPs.

Wolfkostin / Chen had been skating together for less than 3 months before their first JGP, and their 2nd event was in early September. It stands to reason their scores would go up at Golden Spin given an additional 3 months of practice.

Sure, but that Golden Spin score would have ranked them fourth at the JGP Final, less than a point off bronze. I absolutely think they're a team with a lot of upside, but I find it unlikely that they've suddenly shot that far up the rankings.

Golden Spin scores were no more more inflated than D'Alessandro/Waddell's Challenge score - they went from 152.76 to 174.32 in just two months, and they've been skating together for 3 seasons. D/W's score was just short of GPF gold by .58 and by .44 of GPF silver.

Wolfkostin / Chen scored 160.91 at Sectionals---higher than their JGP scores, but not by 20 points. Then they went to GS and scored 163.81 -- still less than 20 points over the GP.

Uh, sure, but that’s a domestic score and I didn’t list it for the same reason.

All the teams have room to grow their scores at YOG, between general progression through the season and hopefully not making errors (large or small) that they made earlier.

Just looked up the protocol for JGP RUS where Wolfkostin / Chen scored 148.81. Turns out Katarina fell on the twizzles and they lost 5 points on that element, plus the 1.00 for the fall. But they placed 2nd in the FD, beating Davis / Smolkin. So the jump in points from their 2nd GP to Golden Spin doesn't look nearly as 'inflated'. It looks more like a brand new team has improved since their debut.

I think it might be fair to say that all of these teams could be in the hunt for a medal based on what we have seen this season:
Tyutyunina/Shustitskiy
Makita/Gunara
D'Alessandro/Waddell
Wolfkostin/Chen
Yoshida/Nishiyama

The top three scores are very close, plus Tyutyunina & Shustistskiy split results with D'Alessandro & Waddell in one event.
Makita & Gunara have a score comparable to Tyutyunina & Shustiskiy.
Wolfkostin & Chen split scores with Ushakova & Nekrasov and Bashynska & Beaumont this season. (B&B have been splitting scores with Makita & Gunara).
Yoshida & Nishiyama's scores are off the pace, but their scoring potential does appear to be climbing, and if I remember correctly, they counted one if not two falls in their second event? I've no time to look it up right now.
We've not seen the 2nd Russian team on the JGP, but based on how the Russian junior teams usually place in their first events, we'll go ahead & factor them as well.

These are young junior teams. None with much experience competing for international medals. Almost all have had mistakes this season. (W&C have had falls in @half of their events so still learning for sure). Really, I think it's possible for all of these teams to surprise. It's a learning experience and a great opportunity for young teams that are at this point just cracking the JGP podiums.

However, Fleming’s trip was in jeopardy because of a concussion she suffered early in 2019, the third one she has had in her skating career.
“When Cate had her concussion, they both had to work [through] personal issues,” said Palascak. “For pairs skaters, the individual elements are often weaker, but it’s actually one of their strengths. They’ve spent six seasons together and really developed a strong bond.”
The injury forced Fleming to miss several competitions, including the Skate Detroit event in July that has become a premier showcase for the nation’s youngest figure skaters.
“My family, my coaches, and my partner were all really supportive through it,” Fleming said. “I worked with a great medical team and I was back working pretty quickly to how bad the concussion was.”
Fleming recovered in time to compete in the first US National Qualifying Series in the junior pairs last summer, and she and Isbell finished third to qualify for the Youth Olympics.

Since beginning their pairs skating career at the Club in 2015, Cate and Jedidiah have been continuing to climb the ranks within the pairs discipline. They are three-time U.S. Championships medalists, five-time U.S. Championships competitors, and have qualified to compete in their sixth U.S. Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, in January 2020. Cate and Jedidiah won bronze in their first international competition, the North American Series in Toronto, in August 2018. This summer they took 3rd place in the first-ever U.S. National Qualifying Series in the junior pairs event.

They are coached by Fred Palascak and Melanie Lambert at ScoB.

My apologies. I very clearly remember a commentator saying that a certain score was an SB at the Youth Olympics and then it never showed up on the list, but after your post, I went back to look up the scores; and the commentator was just incorrect (or my memory, which is always plausible). The team already had a higher score from earlier in the season. In any case, that is good news for the athletes.
