So, the South Korean fencer was leading her Chinese competitor and it looks like she strained a muscle in her arm. Hard to say if she's going to be able to secure the win after the extended medical break.

Skateboarding reminds me of the freestyle skiing and snowboarding at the Winter Olympics. They just don't seem to be as fun as they could be.

Upset in the women’s road race cycling with Austria winning gold!
It was a three-woman break for quite a while, but the other two dropped behind and were caught with less than 5K to go. Good for Kiesenhofer for keeping her lead all the way to the finish!

I checked her Olympic bio, and wow - I'm impressed :)
She has studied for a master's degree in mathematics at the University of Cambridge in England, and a PhD in applied mathematics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain. She has also worked as a postdoctoral researcher in mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Australian commentators are absolutely butchering the pronunciation of the Japanese and Russian names in the swimming 🙄

France beats US men in basketball. I’m not shocked: Look at some of our best young NBA talent—Greece, Slovenia, Cameroon, France, Canada. The game is truly universal and the US will need to develop a team rather than throw a bunch of players together two weeks before the Games.

The long NBA season that this year ran into the end of July was a big problem, as well as the injuries racked up by major players.

The men’s beach volleyball players are wearing way too much clothes.

If the women have to play in bikinis “because that’s the way it’s done on the beach” the men should be required to play shirtless.

It’s only fair…. :mitchell:
I'm not going to complain about less clothing on either the men or the women, but for the record the women don't have to wear bikinis.

True but I do think our best, young NBA talent is coming from other countries. Maybe I am wrong but it seems they are better at moving the ball around within their offense. In Dallas Luca is a joy to watch because of his understanding of offensive schemes. I really do believe it is stressed more in Europe and South America.

The Italian beach balls are really getting to me. Did no one look in a mirror?

I've just been watching bits and pieces, so miscellaneous.

The women's volleyball - why do they have to wear practically thongs?

In the archery yesterday, they had men and women on the same team. More sports should do that.

The equestrian dressage today got me choked up. The horses are so good. The thing where they high step and hesitate (I don't know the technical term) reminded me of merry go round horses. I've only been on a real horse, on a riding trail, once in my life. HER name was Zeke. (I have pictures.) We used a platform to get on. We trotted a couple times. I hurt every time I sat down and stood up the next day. My boss, on the other side of the cubicle wall, laughed (not in a mean way) every time I groaned. She used to compete in jumping. It was her idea for a team activity after work.

I've probably mentioned this before, but "ladies' figure skating" but "women's gymnastics"?

I can only watch some things for a minute. It all looks alike (badminton, table tennis, geez).

No synchronized swimming?

They had an event at Miamisburg's skatepark yesterday. A couple of guys famous in the sport were there. Whatever.

No more. As of July's ISU Congress -

change in terminology from ‘Ladies’ to ‘Women’ throughout the Special Regulations and Technical Rules of all ISU sports is in accord with the recommendation of the IOC Gender Equality Review Project that there be a fair and balanced portrayal (i.e. how women and men are presented and described) in all forms of communication and official documents, including rules and regulations.

I've heard so many people discussing this and here's the response of some of the beach volleyball players:

As far as the dressage is concerned, I cannot imagine how the riders get the horses to do the exacting moves that are required; it's amazing! And the horses are just such exquisite animals. BTW, the only time I was on a horse was when my traveling companion scheduled a three hour ride through the trails at the Olympic Training Center! At the 1.5 hr. point, they allowed us to get off the horses but I declined saying that if I got off, I would never get back on. When we finished the ride, I made sure that I fed my horse an apple. The other horses in the corral(spelling?) surrounded him and looked at me with imploring eyes(don't you have any for me?). I told them that they hadn't had me sitting on their backs for three hours.

Synchronized swimming is now called Artistic Swimming.
