This has to be bittersweet for the US ladies because no way does ROC win with Biles even not her usual self.
Well they won Qualifications with Biles competing. Simone had looked off for awhile. I am curious if Russia puts Victoria in the all around….

Oh wow, I just woke up and started reading the end of the thread, I didn't realize Simone had to pull out. That is really sad, I hope she is doing ok. Congrats to ROC girls for holding up under pressure and unusual circumstances and to US girls for giving it their all.

I cannot help thinking to this is the first time Team USA was in a position where a team was competitive with them. Biles has just always been way better than everyone.

So mentally they may not have prepared for this. They should have been prepared this was a very good Russian team (who did their usual including beam falls)

And Victoria (what a champion she was clutch on beam)

So, if Simone scratches who moves in to what event?

ETA:
Vault - Skinner
Bars - de Jesus dos Santos
Beam - Ashikawa
Floor - Gadirova

No gold medal for USA today. I hope they are so proud, though. Today they had to take on a completely different fight than they ever imagined and they showed so much strength and grace. They deserve as much credit as any of our teams who won with huge advantages. This is part of what the Olympics are about. Sometimes the wins don't come in gold medals.

I mean this is sport and the competition was today and that was the result, the better team today won the competition.

To be fair, the US team also had only 3 gymnasts while Russia had 4. Russia deserves their gold, but they would also have had a harder time with 3 gymnasts. So lets not pretend it's just an issue of team vs. individual. It's also 4 vs. 3. The US team rallied in a tough situation and proved they are not all about Simone.

It’s not totally fair to say Simone is “pure power” considering she has textbook form on her acrobatics. She’s never just been a chucker of big skills and that’s why she’s been so dominant. She was a lot more fluid and paid more attention to performance on beam and floor before she started pushing the technical of WAG into truly unforeseen territories.
It begs the question... Did her coaching team make the right choice, in pushing the technical of WAG so far? If the bar hadn't been pushed so far, would she have been injured? I suppose it's a chicken & egg sort of conundrum, but maybe less tech would have enabled a physically healthy Simone to compete and that would have been more than enough to counter the rising Russian women to win gold.

So if Simone decides not to do the vault final (which, even if she decides to do the AA, if she has any kind of semi-serious injury, vault seems like the first final she would decide to skip), would MyKayla have to fly back to Tokyo? I read that all travelling alternates and anyone who was done with competition (i.e. didn't make it past prelims, etc. in any sport) had to leave Tokyo within 48 hours of their competition being over due to ********* rules.

I really liked the result in which MyKayla made zero finals and only got to compete in prelims, so I'm selfishly hoping that Simone is well enough to do all her finals. :p

The most interesting thing about tonight is the battle for bronze.

ROC deserved to win based on what was actually done. However, I saw very little relationship to Soviet gymnastics. I don't remember Soviet gymnastics being Cirque du Soleil.

Suni was gorgeous and I'm not actually a fan. I sort of only thought of her as a bar worker until tonight. I don't know what is going on with the other Americans and their underperforming.

Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that MyKayla said she didn't have to go home because she was the reserve for Simone and Jade on Vault.

Mykayla could stay because whilst technically not being a reserve she kind of was, for the 2 US athletes in the final. She hasn't flown back afaik.

Okay?
I responded to a post, somewhat bitter, about ROC would never win if Biles was healthy.

You know I don't follow gymnastics or care enough about any of these athletes for you to be reading something into what I said. So I am certainly not pretending anything

Not necessarily. Who won the qualifier? Close but...Russia there, too.

Time to end the gloating-G.O.A.T. thing. Simone's great but far from perfect. Rio was her big Olympics.

Power is important but aesthetically-beautiful lines are, too. It's called ARTISTIC Gymnastics, right? Need both - China certainly has the balletic lines (like Russia) but disappointed in the "power" department.

So very happy for the Russians!!! But crushed for the US and for Simone! I hope she is going to be okay. And also so happy for team GB! Okay the US lost two gymnasts, Kara and Simone but what happened to China?!

She's like Hanyu. She's won it all already; the only challenge left for her is to push the tech content. That's what motivates her.

Russia has three great All-Arounders. They only used Akhaimova on vault, just like Simone was only used on vault. However, yes they would've had a tough time had it been one of their stars that had to be pulled.
