Ice Dance = 10 max (5 CAN + 5 USA)

Will this be with the Advanced Novice international compulsory dances?

There were only three teams that competed in the Advanced Novice division for the Lake Placid International last year, but that was technically the "international" competition. (Versus seven teams that competed in the novice division at the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships).

It looks like it. The Lake Placid announcement states that novices will compete the Argentine Tango and Blues, and the key points are from the ISU. Link to announcement: http://www.lakeplacidskating.com/events/IDC/LPIDI18 Announcement.pdf

Since the top 18 at Challenge advanced to Canadian Nationals, wouldn't 42nd place at Challenge just mean 42nd at Challenge? ;)

Skate Canada has been publishing press releases for their NAS teams, which is nice. I wish USFS would do the same...

Just watched the Novice women at the Toronto NACS, after the short program its Kate Wang from USA in first, and second is Jaime Gabbard of Canada and third is Emily Zhang from USA. Overall some talented skaters, some having issues with nerves I think so will wait till after their long to fully comment. Good overall skaters, very well packaged and all of them really no issues with the lower level triples with the top young women being a little more solid. The only issue with the two USA young women is they are really quite small, unlike for the most part the Canadian women who are physically a little more mature.

That's funny. It was the same at the Lake Placid ice dance event I attended. Maybe really is a cultural difference at the novice level?

A friend of mine who judges suggested Canadian skaters seem to focus more on strength training than American skaters at the elite level? I know there is a lot of emphasis on the LTD (long term development plan). Also weight training is now suggested at younger ages? Might explain it. Just guessing though.

I don't know about the ladies, but as far as the dancers I saw were concerned, I don't think this was the case. Or at least not fully the case. No amount of strength training could make Tkachenko & Kiliakov, the Peals, Lin & Sletten, and Cain & Davydov the size of most of the Canadian novice teams that attended. These are small people. (Lin & Sletten have grown a bit since last year, but it is their third season in novices & they were as small as the others for a couple seasons there). One day, they will likely be a physical match. There is no great discrepancy between the U.S. and Canadian junior dance teams. Even Gropman & Somerville have grown to the point where they fit with the other junior athletes. It was only at the novice level where there was a huge difference at Lake Placid.

We do have novice teams from U.S. Nationals that would probably match those Canadian teams in size, but they are not the top competitors. Watching the FDs in the intermediate field at U.S. Nationals last year, for example, it was the most apparent. The bottom group of intermediates looked like juniors. The penultimate group looked the size of most of our novices. And the top/ultimate group was itty bitty. Is this true with the younger dancers at Canadian Nationals? It's not always true here, but there's definitely something of a pattern. The top athletes move up the ranks at an earlier age and at the novice level they are often smaller than the majority of the pack. Even when they aren't younger, they often look it.

Ethnicity might play a role in size. Most training programs in Canada do not involve weights at the Novice levels (exception of the male dancers and pair skaters who tend to be older) but sport specific training exercises with resistance training (see Flexafit as a popular training model) and Stott Pilates type programs are popular.

That’s actually changing at the coaches training the current education is that earlier strength training (juvenile up)including plyometric training is actually the most beneficial for developing skaters. Unlike the past when it was post puberty for strength training. But will likely depend on the coaching team as the old way of thinking is still likely prevalent at some training centres.

Novice women just finished Kate Wang was first overall from USA, a decent skate but really small jumps but she is tiny. Top Canadian was Doriela Lugo-Mayrand in second a strong skater with decent size jumps well deserved.

OK, I looked up the ages of the Novice dancers from Lake Placid as best I could.

Canada:
McQuilkin & Portz-15 & 17
Kam & Carter 14 & 16
Shadid & Shadid 14 & 16
Saunders & Oddson 14 & 15
Hammond & Barsoum 14 & 13

US:
Lin & Sletten-13 & 12 as of January.
Peal & Peal-They were 10 & 14 as of January.
Tkachenko & Kiliakov-12 & 13 as of January.
Cain & Davydov-12 & 14 as of January.
Brown & Driscoll-I can't find their ages at all.
Foti & Bennett-14 & 14 as of March
Pride & Lawless-I can't find their ages at all.

So there's probably a bit of a disparity in age there. (I only looked up the NACS teams & the top 3 non NACS novice teams from Lake Placid).
