I remember the season after Vancouver and the situation was no better. And then russian and Chinese pairs competed. But the apocalypse did not happen and everything was fine

As reigning silver, bronze and 'pewter' medalists I think Pang/Tong, Savchenko/Szolwoky and Kavaguti/Smirnov would disagree with the situation being no better. They were all on the GP that fall. K/S only did one event as he was still recovering from surgery - and still won!

We also had a really strong second tier of new pairs/new to the Sr. level such as Sui/Han, Duhamel/Radford, MT/Mosco, Lubov/Maisuradze, Takahashi/Tran. All three US teams were about on par with this group as well - Caitlyn/someone not named, Evora/Ladwig and Denney/Barrett. Then at worlds, Volo/Trankov first competed.

Savchenko/Szolwoky with a jump 2S would disagree :shuffle: I remember the last GP in France was a disaster because there were no replacements at all.
In 2010, all these couples did not seem so strong. And, perhaps, the couples who are now collecting medals will be considered the same stars in 12 years.

Uh. I guess we have different ideas of 'situation no better'. How can you compare 2-3-4 finishers at the Olympics competing the next season with none of top 5 finishers competing the next season? Especially with the caliber of P/T, S/S, and K/S?

And your jump 2S argument? S/S did a 3T/3T sequence in that same FS, which no one else was really doing at the time. Or even 12 years later for that matter.

So yeah, please continue comparing the top teams of that post-Olympic season with this one. Russia and China DID compete that grand prix season.

However, I do hope this rebuilding season continues to produce top and mid ranked teams of high quality.

I do wish they would fix the age rule for junior pairs, you don’t age out until the youngest partner. Maybe make an age gap limit?

That's not a bad idea, though I do think there should be an upper age limit - maybe 23?

I don't think this is correct. 13 year old and 23 year old are both juniors?

Obviously it sucks for individual pairs who are already together, but I think the rule is fine. Teams with a four year sporting age gap (so up to almost five calendar years depending on birthdays) don’t have to sit out any years of international competition, and that’s a large enough difference.

If anything, just add a grandfather clause for teams who had competed internationally or at national championships before the senior age change was passed (which I guess would help Bar/Tiou but not Mura/Mori).

I like the idea of a maximum age gap - say 7 years.

My comment was in conjunction with @Spikefan's suggestion of a maximum age-differential between the two partners as well as allowing a team to remain junior until the youngest partner ages out. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I'd be in favor of the ISU implementing a maximum age-differential of, say, 7 years, which is what we have now, along with increasing the age maximum to 23 for junior pairs men to allow for a 23yr old & a 16 yr old to compete internationally as juniors and then move up to seniors the next season when the female partner is age-eligible.
Bringing this over here to the Pairs General discussion thread from the JGPF Pairs FS pbp thread...

Sooooo, looking ahead to Euros and 4CCs now that there are no further pairs competitions for teams to attain the minimums at...

ISU European, ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2023:
SP/RD FS/FD
PAIR SKATING 25.00 42.00

Euros field - 15 teams
3: ITA, RUS*
2: BLR*, GEO, GER, HUN, ESP

Seems pretty safe, at this point, to assume that we won't see Russia or Belarus at Euros.

AUT - Schaller/Mayr (earned the SP min at Golden Spin finally!)
CZE - Zukova/Bidar or Simioli/Zarbo - we'll know next weekend after Four Nationals, I presume
ESP - none (see link above re: Barquero/Zandron's status)
FRA - Kovalev/Kovalev
GBR - Vaipan-Law/Digby
GEO - Metelkina/Parkman & Safina/Berulava (presuming she's healthy)
GER - Efimova/Blommaert & Hocke/Kunkel (looked at the German Euros rankings this morning and RoSchu are so far back, it seems pretty set)
HUN - Pavlova/Sviatchenko (earned TES mins at Golden Spin debut)
ITA - Conti/Macii, Ghilardi/Ambrosini & Beccari/Guarise (see @Andrea82's update in the Italian news thread this morning re: the Euros race)
NED - Osipova/Epstein? (Golden Spin was the determinant for their dance team - higher placing team got the Euros ticket, so I'm guessing it's the same for pairs, but it might be some combined score since they also competed against each other at Espoo)
SWE - Crafoord/Crafoord
UKR - Sierova/Khobta or Holichenko/Darenskiy - does anyone know 1) if HolDar are healthy yet?, 2) if so, what Ukraine's selection criteria is?

4CCs field - 13 teams max
AUS - Golubeva/Giotopoulos-Moore, Chernyshova/Windsor (presuming they're still a team - they're not listed on the Australian 2023 National Squad per ISA's IG post from last week)
CAN - Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps, Pereira/Michaud, McIntosh/Mimar
CHN - Peng/Jin, Wang/Jia, Zhang/Yang
JPN - Miura/Kihara
PHI - Gamez/Korovin
USA - Chan/Howe, Smirnova/Siianytsia, Kam/O'Shea (presuming that Knierim/Frazier skip 4CCs to appear in Art on Ice as scheduled)

Worlds is still murky - plenty of chances for some of these teams to get the World TES mins they're lacking...

I'm looking at the entry list for Austrian Nationals next weekend and it lists 4 pairs teams - 1 each in Senior, Junior, Advanced Novice & Basic Novice. Senior team is Schaller/Mayr, and the Junior team is Ghedini/Maierhofer, which explains why we haven't seen them compete at all this fall - there have been very few junior pairs competitions since the JGP concluded (I think maybe NRW?).

Depending on how they look at Austrian Nationals, it is entirely possible they will be entered to compete at either IceLab Cup or Bavarian Open the first week of February in order to try and earn the TES mins for Jr Worlds - Maierhofer doesn't turn 21 until next May, so they should be age-eligible.

Looks like there is a new junior pairs team from Slovakia competing at Four Nationals Championship this weekend - Nikola Sitkova/Oliver Kubacak. He was partnered with Margareta Muskova last season - they competed at one JGP (ISU bio).

Kucianova/Vochozka from CZE also competed in junior pairs.

Two senior pairs - Simioli/Zarbo, who made their debut representing CZE at Warsaw Cup last month, and Pavlova/Sviatchenko, who made their debut last weekend at Golden Spin, representing HUN.

I watched the two senior pairs this afternoon during my lunch break with the volume turned down, but plan on re-watching them again as well as the junior teams, especially since this is the debut for Sitkova/Kubacak and our first chance to see Pavlova/Sviatchenko thanks to the lack of a stream at Golden Spin.

Here's the link, cued to start with junior pairs, from earlier today - https://youtu.be/BxfKL75DYeA?t=27602

I'm looking forward to the free skates tomorrow!

Spanish Nationals is also happening this weekend with two junior teams, including the debut of Linda de Nardin/Patricio Rossi. I know there was a free stream and I plan on searching it out later.

Also, tomorrow & Sunday we'll have Italian Nationals to look forward to with five teams competing in senior pairs and two in juniors! Unfortunately, Austrian, Finnish and Swedish Nationals don't have free streams, otherwise I'd be excited to check those out (Austrian junior debut of Ghedini/Maierhofer and Finnish senior debut of Vaananen/Clerici - who can't compete internationally until next season).

If I translated correctly the recap by Czech Federation on Four Nationals, they are sending Simioli/Zarbo to Euros
I wonder what the deal with Zukova/Bidar is at this point. They WD from NHK due to a death in one of their families, IIRC, but that was a month ago.

This Week in Skating's pocast (Dec. 19, 2022) features a roundtable pairs discussion with guests Meagan Duhamel & Claire Cloutier:
LOL - I'm dying near the end where Meagan disses the musical choices of both MiuKih and KniFraz, suggesting they need to try other musical styles. Go ahead, Meagan, broach that topic over Christmas dinner with your husband and sister-in-law.

And Zukova/Bidar are done.

Per Instagram, Zhukova/Bidar are no more. He says they are both going in different directions, and we will soon see what happens next.

I was just coming here to post the announcement from Czech Figure Skating with a quote from Jelizaveta...

Re-posting here from the Australian news thread today:
Harley Windsor announced the end of his partnership with Maria Chernyshova in an IG story.
Their only international was Golden Spin in December 2021: http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00111919.htm
Just watched it. No reason given „it wasn’t meant to be“ and that he wants to go on skating so anyone looking for a pairs partner send him a DM.
What about Minerva Haase?
@Hedwig - from earlier in this thread (Nov. 11):
There are posts in the German news thread about Minerva Hase & Nikita Volodin from this past Friday, starting here: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...s-2022-2023-season.109792/page-2#post-6333347

Cross-psoting from the US Pairs thread...

So absolutely bummed to see this announcement from Cayla Smith that she and Andy Deng have ended their partnership!

I'm glad she plans to look for a new partner - I hope she is successful because she's a star in the making.

Machine translations:

MOSCOW, January 17 - RIA Novosti, Alena Sulizova. Karina Safina, performing in a sports pair with Luka Berulava, suffered a knee injury, because of this, the skaters withdrew from the European Championships, the coach of the athletes Pavel Slyusarenko told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the head of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation, Mariam Giorgobiani , stated that the couple would not compete at the European Championships, as Safina had health problems.
“Karina has a knee injury – the same as at the Grand Prix. She is recovering slowly, no one can say how long it will take. As soon as she recovers, she will return to the competition,” Slyusarenko said.

MOSCOW, January 17 - RIA Novosti, Svetlana Bonopartova. The sports couple Anastasia Metelkina / Daniil Parkman broke up, President of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation Mariam Giorgobiani told RIA Novosti.
"The couple of Anastasia Metelkina and Daniil Parkman broke up," said Giorgobiani.
Metelkina and Parkman took 16th place at the 2021 World Championships.

I was just talking about this exact topic with my friend from the boards here about 10 minutes ago. It was very noticeable for me tonight. Is she specifically targeting USA pairs. The link is not opening for me
No, she clarifies that she means WORLDWIDE - which is what I said in my post.

She responded to someone that her timing was bad but it was a worldwide problem when they defended US teams
The best part was when someone pointed out that Peng/Jin are the ones who really started this trend a few years ago. They're not wrong.

Honestly, though, while I don't entirely disagree with her, I'd rather see the teams going clean than falling all over the place.
