There is no allegation that anyone was trying to spy into the house. (But who wouldn't want a look inside?)

The photographer was behind some bushes on the road. Now, if someone popped out of a bush at me I would be startled....freaked....frightened. Meghan is smiling right into the camera.

Of course, one way to make sure that does not happen is to hire a discreet security crew. I would think Harry would want his family protected from.......oh I don't know..........kidnappers? It is a public road.

oh there is another article about that issue.

The park is public. She is fair game. They must have very odd expectations.

The more relevant question is what is done with the photo after it's taken. There are some privacy laws in Canada regarding consent to have your photo taken and distributed through other media.

which house?
The one
which house?
Supposedly t is this one:

Vancouver Island Home on Billionaire Row
  • 6,900-sq ft property boasts 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms across a sprawling four floors in west Vancouver
  • Beach-side mansion is on a row of extravagant properties dubbed 'Golden Miles' and has panoramic views
  • Harry and Meghan would be able to protect their privacy by mansion's gates, tall hedges and 20-foot wall

I believe where she is walking is near the house.

According the article I linked to above, taking people’s photo and putting them on Instagram is legal. For those who want more information, google is your friend.

“...If your photograph is newsworthy, and being published for the purpose of news, then no model release, location release, or trademark permission is needed. This includes newsworthy photos of celebrities, politicians, or other people in the public eye...”

"Billionaire Row" is a bit much. Yes, the house is in an area with several other large houses/mansions, but it's not that extravagant.

"Taking the dog for a walk" might not qualify as news ;) I think with a lot of people of H&M's stature, there are just so many photos taken under the claim of "newsworthy" or "public eye" that it would take more time than anyone on earth has to file lawsuits against all of them.

IIRC there have been some Canadian cases where people whose pictures were taken as part of e.g. a street scene have sued and been able to have the photos deleted from databases. Especially when the pictures were used to illustrate less-than-positive stories about a neighbourhood or city.

Given everything that has happened in the last few week, I think you would have a hard time suggesting it isn’t news. Under normal circumstances, yes, I agree.

I am confused about how a house can be both “A Vancouver Island house on billionaires row” and be in “west vancouver” at the same time. Houseboat?

The events happening right now with the leaders from Africa is why I think the Queen wanted this drama sorted really quickly. I wouldn't be surprised, with Harry's connections to Africa, that he would have originally been planned to be heavily involved in the engagements. They would have needed everything concluded prior to the functions starting.

As for those photos - I read that the warnings were sent to the UK Press - I presume invoking the protections royals have in the UK in regards to candid pics being published in the UK media.

There's nothing stopping the international press agencies taking the photos or international media from printing them.

I wonder if the hope is that if they stop the UK press publishing candid pics, then the rest of the world will lose interest. Although, that could be an interesting legal battle to determine whether Harry is still covered by those protections when he's no longer a working member of the royal family.

A good contrast is how when Kate Middleton was just dating William, the paparazzi would line her street, stand outside her home and harass her constantly. But now that she's got those royal protections, she can go about her business shopping, school run etc with no paparazzi.

I really don't know what Harry expected? In the UK he was protected by the privacy laws that didn't allow the paparazzi to invade their privacy - there were no sly pics of Meghan or Harry taken whilst in the UK. He has moved to a country that doesn't have as much protection he and his family had in the UK and he still blames the UK press even though the photos of Meghan were taken by a US based paparazzi company and printed in media from around the world. Unfortunately I suspect Harry will come to realise he has jumped from the frying pan into the fire and the privacy he so wanted will elude him even more than when he was based here in the UK.

From your link:

“Are you worried about your safety because someone is:
■ following you everywhere...
■ contacting you over and over...
■ watching your home or office...
■ making you or your family feel threatened?
You may be experiencing criminal harassment!
It’s a crime! You can get help.”

I am thinking that a few photos on a public trail, from a distance, while you are being escorted by two armed security folk, are not going to make the test for stalking. It is actually quite insulting to those who are real victims of stalking.

I am wondering what some posters here would be saying if, on a day when Harry and Meghan were say, hosting their first international reception at BP, Kate went out with Prince Louis and her dog for a walk and smiled at photographers knowing the photos would make many a front page?

I am NOT saying this was done on purpose. I am only pointing out how it is possible to stretch things that happen in the press to fit a preconceived idea.

Meghan seemed entirely unconcerned and was broadly smiling directly into the camera lens looking serene. So that might suggest it’s Harry that has the problem.

Either that or Meghan was deliberately acting a happy expression to make sure that the photos weren’t used as proof she was unhappy or something. Which is a possibility.

@Lorac ITA. Here is an article on the “warning” from H&M’s lawyers:

I don’t think the photos are illegal. Poking the bear when the bear has the upper hand, is not always a smart move. H&M may want to rethink their tactics.

Their actions are not consistent with their words. They keep saying they don't want the attention, and then they keep doing things to get attention. SIGH.
^^^Yup. It may take him awhile to get used to not being royal and entitled.😉
Like forever!!

The cynic in me wonders if Meghan deliberately staged this before Harry arrived.

I'm reminded of Hillary Clinton's "I'm normal person walking my dogs in the woods and I'm OK even though I'm not the president" photos in the months following the 2016 election.

She likely was unaware as these cameras can take such long distance pics.

Well this latest warning from their lawyers cracked me up.

Has Harry looked at those photos that Meghan was looking right at the camera and smiling happily before decided to issue that warning?

After his statement that he was going to give Meghan the family she never had, I began to suspect that he is a simple-minded, easily manipulated person. His speech before leaving UK and this warning just made it clear to me what kind of persons this couple is.

Meanwhile...

I love Kate’s focus on the early years. The first years of life are so important it is nice to see someone with the power to move people spending time listening to experts and then stepping up to help substantive stuff get done.

ETA:
Another really comprehensive post about the engagement as well as the early years initiative. Kate has been working on this right from the start of her royal life.
