Mao’s thoughts post-The Ice and her message to her skater peers and fans:

00:30

I personally thought, maybe I don’t actually have to continue skating, and that The Ice is one of the ways to draw a clear line and that I’ll just go from there.

02:43

This will be The Ice’s 11th year, but it’s been a while since we last had the skaters who were there working hard along my side during my career perform in this show, and not only did they do their own performances, but they also got involved with the collaborations, so I feel so much warmth from everyone’s feelings.

04:25

Thank you so much guys! I feel so happy and lucky to have been able to skate amongst you beautiful skaters during my career, and thank you so much for working with me in this show with so much warmth. I’m just filled with so much gratitude. Let’s continue to work hard even if we all go into different paths. Shoma, please work hard this season, to go to the Olympics! Mura-kun too, please work hard, and go to the Olympics! And the skaters who have retired, even if we do end up having connections with skating again, let’s also continue to work hard! (laughs laughs laughs) Let me try this again, to the retired skaters, let’s continue working hard on skating!!! Thank you everyone!

05:42

I do think it’s not good to just cut off on something that I’ve been doing since I was five. In the end, it’s the thing that will forbid me from losing. This will be a new beginning for me, but the fact that it’ll be based around skating won’t change.

06:24

The Ice has finished, and so I would like to think, choose, and move forward with a new path, so please continue supporting me.

https://cantilovertranslations.tumb...and-daisukes-talkshow-on-the-first-day-of-the

Mao and Daisuke’s talkshow on the first day of The Ice with Mai:

Mao: All of the skaters that I am really close to are here, there’s nothing that makes me happier than this.

Daisuke: It feels like a class reunion. Is it okay that we’re having this much fun? (laughs)

Mao: It’s honestly been so long since I’ve seen everyone, so it’s been so fun like during practices and on the rink.

Daisuke: But we get so into our conversations that we don’t listen to instructions and we’ve gotten scolded for that (laughs)

Mai: Both of you have started stepping forward on your new paths after retiring from competitive skating, but how do you feel looking at each other’s situations?

Mao: I’ve only retired this year, so everyone else retired a bit before me, but I feel so inspired seeing Dai-chan as a reporter and performing in dance shows and such, and also seeing Mai working hard on stage. For me, I think the new beginning officially starts after The Ice 2017, and I hope we’ll continue to work hard together.

Daisuke: I myself am still trying out a lot of different things, and I’m still in a roaming position. Like, ‘What should I do~~’. I would like to continue experiencing different things. Well, I’m more interested to see what Mao does from now on than what I will do.

Mai: You two have known each other for more than 15 years, including going to the Olympics together, and going to a training camp in Canada together when you were both in elementary school.

Mao: During that training camp in Canada, we were always together for more than a month. That program Dai-chan just skated, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no.2, I think I was 14 when I saw that program and thought it was so nice and pretty. This Rach piece was the piece that I had always wanted to skate to. If we were in the same segment we would’ve been rivals so if I were a guy I would’ve never used this piece, but I thought maybe I will use this because I’m a girl. I remember Dai-chan’s performance of it so clearly since I was 14, that’s how good of a program it was, so I’m so content that I got to see it again today.

Daisuke: I didn’t think I would skate it again either. (laughs) I’m happy that I got an opportunity like this.

Mai: You two have known each other for a very long time. What is your best memory of each other?

Mao: When I was in 5th grade and when Dai-chan was 16 I think. Around that time, didn’t we perform at Candelero’s ice show, just us two? We also performed in an ice show in Kazakistan together. It was really just us two, so we were always together, and we just ate horse meat everyday. (laughs)

Daisuke: Because Kazakistan’s local dish was horse meat. We kept eating it while saying like, “it’s getting a bit too much isn’t it”. (laughs)

Mao: We ate like a whole life time’s supply of horse meat.

Mai: I think there were fans who cried even more seeing Dai-chan cry after watching Mao’s Sochi performance. (laughs)

Daisuke: Since then, I’ve become so prone to tears. Until then, I never cried that much, but she made me cry two days in a row in Sochi.

Mao: I think that was the first time I saw Dai-chan’s tears as well! I think there are a lot of other people who thought that?

Dai: I’ve cried quite a few times since then, because that was when I burst out crying.

Mai: Now, Please say a message to each other. First, from Mao to Dai-chan.

Mao: Since our ages are bit apart, we weren’t together during our novice years, but since our junior years, we’ve gone to shows and training camps together, and we’ve competed in the same competitions a lot when we became seniors. A lot of the times, the mens segment was first, so there were many times when I skated after seeing Dai-chan’s results, and if he won or something, I would think, “Aaa, us ladies must do our best as well!” and I would always work hard because of that. Therefore, there was a part of me that was a bit down after Dai-chan’s retirement, but now, since we are both moving into our new pathways, please continue taking care of me! Wait, that sounds a little weird. (laughs) More like, let’s both work hard individually!

Daisuke: Mao wrapped it up so beautifully. (laughs) Since there was the presence of “Mao Asada”, I was able to work hard during my skating career. Now that Mao has retired and is moving forward as a pro skater, I want her to open pathways that only she is able to open. To open opportunities and pathways for the younger generation of skaters when they retire and become professional skaters, would you… do something like that for us even though it’s so far in the future? (laughs) In the end, Mao Asada is a skater who cannot be copied by anyone else, and I don’t want to lose against her either as a rival, so please, let’s continue to work hard together. This is kind of

embarrassing. (laughs)

Mao: I didn’t think we would be asked to say a message for each other.

Mai: It’s not in the script, I just wanted to hear it myself. (laughs) We’re starting the second half of the show now. Mao, what is your feeling now that this show has begun?

Mao: I’m so nervous since this is the first day. My legs are shaking. Since it’s been a long time since the last show, so I think the audience is nervous and excited, but I’m also nervous and excited.

– Thoughts after seeing Mao Asada’s first performance after retiring

Shoma : Of course I thought, “She’s so amazing”. Her expression, flow, and other aspects I thought are overwhelmingly more beautiful than that of other skaters. She is a presence I look up to, an athlete I looked up to, and I would like to continue looking up to her as a skater.

Awww :swoon:

I love "Wind Beneath My Wings"--a beautiful, poignant performance to everyone that supported her throughout her career, including the fans. :) The white dress is gorgeous--very Kwan-like.

I also really enjoyed the Ritual Dance with the longer version of the red dress. She and Daisuke had great connection in the beginning. I hope he talks to her about his skating tour company idea. ;)

Does anyone know what happened to the special thread on Mao's retirement? It seemed to have disappeared and when I tried to access it, I got an error message.
I asked a few more questions about the retirement thread after you posted on the board business thread. Seems it was the time for the Mao's retirement thread to be moved to Archives. But, @Prancer kindly moved it back to GSD for a while. :) So you (or anyone else who wants to re-read the retirement thread) need to hurry to read the thread or get any info on it before the thread will be moved back to Archives.

Now that everyone are reusing programs I was listening again the Tango of Alfred Schnittke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWK7Y7ADjD0 and it is really, really beautiful, it is a shame that Mao never skated at full potential, her mom was very sick at that time. I am sure she would do a grat job with this music now, in this stage of her career. I had not heard more music from this composer and he has a lot of excellent music, I wonder why figure skaters do not use it more frequently.

In my opinion, Mao did skate Tango to full potential at Nationals 2010 including a triple axel and one of the smoothest moves I have ever seen Mao do better than she did it in any other performance of the Tango: agile and quick whirlwind twirls with one foot off the ice seamlessly transitioning out of her triple loop with dramatically graceful arm motions as she flashes a passionate smile as her face whirls past the camera.

Here is a high quality 1080 60 fps version of Mao's NHK exhibition 2006 that was just posted.

Well, perceptions may vary, that performance did not seem so great to me, and I did not mean the jumps, in fact my favorite performance from that program was her debut in Beijing ARTISTRY ON ICE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8SD536-8As and she had problems with the jumps in that performance, but she looked more intense IMO in Beijing. I don´t know, I always felt that she looked cute instead of mature, fierce or sexy in that program, I always kept wanting more. Similar (keeping due proportions) to the problem that Marin has with her new tango. I do not know, Mao really did a good job, but I guess I was hoping for another kind of tango.

I like that version too, especially the dancing, and thanks for the link to the hd video of it. To me in programs including Mao's Tango, her appeal is multi-dimensional including her combination of smoothness, great dancing ability, power in both emotional sincerity and intensity, skating skills and complex elements, and most importantly for me balance which I suspect comes from her extensive ballet training and makes all the movements flow through elegant extension from one to the next seamlessly and naturally. For me, this is beautiful in a holistic and often transcendent sense that goes beyond descriptions such as sexy, mature or fierce though I certainly think Mao displays these characteristics. Often times I find in skating performances that these terms apply more to facial expressions, while Mao is doing so much fluid movement and so many steps while making expressions that often whirl by the eyes that can be seen for the full range of their complexity, agility and intensity in still shots, but that I also feel are full of a "multi-dimensional expressiveness" that is the most compelling for me when watching a performance. But, I don't think Mao is doing my vision of traditional tango, which seems more staccato than Mao's smooth movements, but I love her interpretation of it because she is such a great dancer with a rare talent that incorporates ballet and jazz dance into tango motions. And Mao's one-legged twirling twizzles out of the triple loop at Nationals is one of those moments that struck me like the comments made by the dancing instructor on NPR radio who liked Mao's performances the best at Vancouver. She essentially said that Mao can come out with rare moments of seemingly effortless dancing on ice that are full of artistry and the magic of natural musicality.

Here is a high quality 1080 60fps video of Mao's Rach II performance at NHK 2013. In my mind when I hear this, my favorite piece of music I always see Mao skating to it because it seems specially made for her to interpret through all she has been through and the depths of emotion and great intricacy of movements she has shared with the world. It showcases her incredibly immense talent for artistry, athleticism, dancing and skating and this performance of it foreshadows her Sochi LP.

Here is an improved audio version of Mao's first performance of Elegy. Unfortunately, I still can't find any performances from any of the other shows but at least the audio is a lot better in this version. It is also in high visual quality at 1080 60 fps.

OMG!!, thank you so much, I was so frustrated with that audio. I love that program:swoon:

Add. the image quality is a lot better too. How did they do that?

If puppies are to be had, she should name one of them Axel III (the third).

Nice guess! ;) About the dogs at Asada household:

Yes, Aero is 11-yr old now. After adopting Aero, 3 yrs later more puppies were born. We all know there are other dogs at Asada household, including Tiara and Komachi. But I only got to know recently, that Aero gave birth to at least one other. And guess what's it's name? It is said that they gave away 'Axel' (yap! Mao-chan gave way 'Axel' :D)

Mai recently (just last week or so) tweeted that they're getting a 4th dog for Asada household:dog::

(NB: the new puppy is named 'エル' El? or Al?)

Since this thread has entered the Aero zone, I thought I would post this image I found of Aero in the spotlight running down the red carpet. At least I think it is Aero.: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DHMOWt3VYAAZOJn.jpg

yes, she is Aero http://stopithannah.tumblr.com/post/164226371892/flapper-dai-the-ice-talk-show-special-guest

Axel, I love it!!. But Mai and Mao don´t live together, right? who has the dogs?

No, Mai and Mao don't live together. IIRC, I think when Mao was still in competitions and lived in Yokohama, it was Mai who took care of the dogs more of the time (Mai posted photos with dogs once in a while in her twitter). But since Mao retired, she has returned to Nagoya. So now Mao may spend more time with the dogs. In the video of the talk show during the 3rd 'The Ice' show in Nagoya (I'll post the link to the video in the next entry), Aero was sitting on Mao's lap after the dog entered the arena. Then Lori came in with a big bouquet for Mao, so Mao had to passed Aero to Mai. But later on during the interview, Aero started to make fuss a little, and Mai said: 'What to do? Aero wants to go over to Mao.' So eventually Aero was passed on back to Mao. I assumed that Aero has been with Mao most of the time recently so that she's very comfortable staying on Mao's lap!
