In 1980, the last time the Olympics were in Russia, it was Serge Belov who lit the flame.

The choice was obviously political at the time. If it is political again, Plushenko is a pretty obvious choice. I still like the idea of Latynina, though.

Wouldn't the equivalent be if Berezhnaya and sikharulidze jointly lit the flame? That would be amazing!

Sandra Dubravčić lit the Olympic flame in Sarajevo 1984 :)

I would love to see Irina Rodnina have the honor.
But it would be cool to see Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze as well.

Irina Rodnina seems like the only great choice! She is a legend.

But I won't know until afterwards, as I will not be watching AT ALL.

I think the most successful Soviet/Russian winter Olympian is cross country skier Raisa Smetanina with 10 medals. I wouldn't mind her lighting the flame, maybe Rodnina could skate across the stadium and give her the torch.

But then, wouldn't Sale and Pelletier have to light it, too?

Tretiak would be a great choice. He was utterly, brilliantly, brilliant...and as far as I know, much loved in Russia, where hockey is loved like it is here.

Even they have Svetlana Zhurova, speed skater, who was a gold medal winner in 2006, recently so she has a good shot. Or it could be a biathlon skier. Even Lyubov Egorova who dominated the 94 games in cross country. I think it might be a woman.
