Say,who do we know for Skaters that Retired in 2012? Please include Discipline.
For Canada, Cynthia Phaneuf and Myriane Samson, both retired. They skated in ladies singles.
Mary Beth Marley, Pairs in the USA.
Samuel Contesti (Italy) and Kevin Vanderperren (Belgium), men's singles.
Amanda Evora (USA), pairs.
Contesti, Ando, Lepisto, Phanuef
Ando has not officially retired, as far as I know.
FSWer, Laura Lepistö is a ladies' singles skater from Finland.
Kylie Duarte, pairs, US
Alexis Miart, ice dance, France - he just kind of... left. I think he's done with competitive skating.
Dan Zhang, pairs, China
Everyone else I can think of has been mentioned.
Ari-Pekka Nurmenkari, singles men, Finland
It's going to be sad when the 2013-14 season ends. Imagine the retirements then.
dare you no official word until now. hope dies last.
She's not "famous," but 3-time Senior Ladies champion of the Netherlands, Manouk Gijsman, announced her retirement on August 1, 2012: http://www.manoukgijsman.nl/
Her ISU bio: http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00009422.htm
Oh that's too bad. I'll always remember how happy she was with her short program at 2010 worlds where she qualified to skate the free. Too bad she never reproduced that, but she will always have that moment.
Is Ian Lorello still training/competing? I thought he was working with Lauri Bonacorsi at DSC, but haven't heard/seen anything about them for a long time.
Emanuel Sandhu UNretired!
Kloe Chanel Bautista/Tyler Harris - both retired due to her injury
Davis/White, Virtue/Moir, Pechalat/Bourzat, Sav/Szol, Pang/Tong, Dai, Oda, Akiko, Mao probably, Yuna, Babou... oh dear, I'll suffer from a severe case of depression...
Thomas Sosniak, single men, France, retired in August
I'm glad they had the experience of competing in the Senior Pairs event at 2012 US Nationals!
Last I heard, Lorello may still be looking for a partner? They parted ways sometime last summer due to his injury and I believe Bonacorsi started college full-time at the Univ. of Pennsylvania.
Jordan Cowan retired last year - he was 7th in Senior Dance at 2012 US Nationals with Anastasia Olson.
Todd Gilles, who was 8th in Senior Dance at 2012 US Nationals with Emily Samuelson, also retired (for the second time).
Did Emily Samuelson also expressed her intention to retire the last summer? Not because she wanted to, but primarily because of Todd Gilles' retirement and difficulty finding another suitable partner.
I think she did, she is coaching now, IIRC.
Thanks, blue_idealist . I wish Emily the best luck.
Yeah... figure skating(and individual sports in general) are cruel that way...
We lucked out with relatively few retirements after Vancouver; at least some of the skaters mentioned might have left then. Post-Sochi will definitely be tough, even with new and exciting skaters coming up the ranks.
Here's how Emily Samuelson ended her public statement last June: http://www.facebook.com/notes/emily-samuelson/todd-and-my-end-of-partnership/10150959989667626
She is continuing her studies at the University of Michigan and coaching in her spare time.
^^ That's a real classy statement from Emily. Very admirable.
